It is the end of our fiscal year 2017-18 and I hope you were inspired by Governor Bell and I, as your Ltg. I truly enjoyed being your 2017-18 Ltg. In our Division 28 this is what we added:

A new Kiwanis Club-Kiwanis Newcastle Area was chartered sponsored by Providence Point-Thanks to Ferrin Lauve our Club Opener who sponsored 15 members (included me), I brought in 6 members (included Ferrin), Ken Ormiston -1, Kathleen-1, a total of 23 members.

A new Key Club-The Bear Creek School added to Key Club Division 27 sponsored by the Redmond Kiwanis.

Currently our Division 28 K-Family consist of 23 Key Clubs, 4 Builders Clubs, 3 K-Kids, 2 aKtion Clubs; Bothell UW CKI, folded, so we are down to 32 K-Family and 12 Kiwanis Clubs. Clubs that increased 20% net growth until August 1st:

Awardees: 2016-17 Outstanding Secretary Marilyn Boyden-Issaaquah and Dr. Thomas Pendergrass-Kirkland. Introducing them below:

Marilyn Boyden is secretary of the Kiwanis Club of Issaquah and the PNW Outstanding Secretary 2016-17. She grew up in Issaquah and went to Issaquah Schools. Her parents moved here in 1948 when Issaquah had a population of just 750! Her dad was a lineman for Puget Sound Power and Light - the only lineman for Issaquah, Preston, Fall City, Snoqualmie and North Bend. She

joined Issaquah Kiwanis 29 years ago in 1989; her high school principal and high school music teacher were also members, along with a handful of her classmates Dads. Only their Dads, Kiwanis had only allowed women to join in 1987. She had been widowed 5 years earlier, and was working with Debbie Berto (her sponsor) at The Issaquah Press. Her late husband's grandfather owned and published The Press between 1919-1947. Kiwanis was a wonderful social outlet for her, after the death of her husband. And it offered a way for her to 'give back' after all the support she received during those darkest of days. Their club membership was really high then; members were mayors, City administrator/employees, the Police Chief and business owners. Just about anyone who was 'anyone' in town was in their Club. That's because they were fun, and folks wanted to be a part of that. Dr. Thomas Pendergrass just recently received the 2017-18 Kirkland Kiwanian of the Year award and is a PNW 2016-17 Outstanding

Secretary from Kirkland Kiwanis. Tom is also very much involved with KCCP. He graduated from the University of Washington, Epidemiology, 1979 and University of Tennessee, Medicine, 1971. He was also recognized as a 2012 and 2016 "Top Doctor" in Seattle magazine's annual survey and a 2013 "Top Doctor" in Seattle Met magazine's annual

survey. He is a pediatric hematology oncology specialist practicing at UW Medicine. Clinical Expertise-Bone and Soft Tissue Sarcomas, Retinoblastoma, Pediatric Leukemias, Pediatric Lymphoma, Wilms' Tumor, Neuroblastoma, Pediatric Liver Malignancies, Pediatric Brain

In 1997, my boss sent me to a Kiwanis meeting in Bremerton after two (2) men in red coats, Ltg’s came to our office in Port Orchard and asked me to join them for a lunch meeting. It turned out that my boss's husband was the president of the Bremerton Kiwanis Club. The Lt. Governors were recruiting members for a new Kiwanis Club called the South Kitsap Breakfast Club wherein I served as the club's Newsletter chairperson for the first year, then secretary until 2006. I received a Hixson Medallion from the South Kitsap Breakfast Club for a service project at the Mary Bridge Children's Hospital in Tacoma.

I changed jobs and worked in Bellevue so I transferred to the Bellevue Kiwanis Club and was Club Secretary for 6 months. In 2011, I changed jobs again and joined the morning Kirkland Sunrisers Club; served as Club President for 2 years and then as Secretary for the past 3 years. Also kept my membership with the Bellevue Kiwanis Club. After I moved to Mercer Island in 2011, I joined the Mercer Island Kiwanis Club and kept my memberships in Kirkland Sunrisers and Bellevue Kiwanis Clubs. I served as Club Treasurer of the Mercer Island Club for 1 year and as Club Secretary/Treasurer for another year. This year, I am the incoming Club President of the Mercer Island Club. Life Member of the Bigfoot Brigade (Past Lt. Governors' Association). I received a Presidential Zeller Medallion for my work as an ambassador for the Eliminate Project to help eliminate MNT in mothers and babies in developing nations around the world. I am also a Life Member. I received an Outreach Medallion for donating to the PNW District's Outreach fund to help our SLP's attend conferences and conventions. In addition, I wear the PNW Foundation's "Rusty" Medallion for a donation given by the Mercer Island Club to the PNW Foundation in memory of Jim Stipes, a really active member who recently passed away. (My medallion goal for this year is to achieve a Mitt Lewis Medallion for donating to SIGN, the Kiwanis International Fracture Care program). We have the incoming 2018-19 Officers, their info below.

Introducing: Penny Arneson, the 2018-19 President of the Redmond Club Kiwanis. She is married to an immigrant from Norway Are Gustavsen, who owns Gustavsen Genealogy. She has seven (7) children-of which two are still living at home age 11 and 7. She was a licensed practical nurse in geriatric nursing from 1986-2002 and then owned and operated an in-home daycare in 2003-2007. She likes to bike, camp, hike, swim, play tennis, dance and volunteer. She is currently working as a professional outreach for Havens Community Connections, a domestic violence organization. She got involved

with Kiwanis through Ferrin via their Toastmasters Club; she was the District 2 Toastmasters Leadership as a Pathways Ambassador and Youth Club Coordinator, business international member and attended BSF for the past 5 years. She helped raise 113K in 2011 for Eastside Domestic Violence/ Lifewire by delivering a keynote speech with Dan Satterberg. She was asked to speak to the US Congress about the safety of toys containing neodimium magnets.
