by Randy Carlsen

K-M seniors Nathan Suhr and Jackie Marquardt arefamiliar faces in the Kasson-Mantorville FFA chapter. Jackieserves as chapter president and Nate is the vice-president.

FFA advisor Lori Pagel strongly believes the organizationcan only be as strong as the leadership. She feels Nate andJackie lead by example and are one of the reasons they arehaving such a good senior year.

Jackie said her older sister Missi’s involvement in FFAmay have had some influence on her being involved in theFFA. Nate lives in town, but has a strong family backgroundin farming, including an uncle and grandparents.

The Future Farmers of America organization was foundedin 1928 in an effort to bring students, teachers and agribusi-ness together to promote agriculture. Today the organizationpromotes leadership, personal growth and career success. Inthe early day a majority of the members were strictly farmers.Today the pendulum has swung in the other direction. More

than half the K-M FFA membership come from non-farmfamilies.

Nate said in FFA a person can learn many life skills thatcan be used long after graduating. He likes the competitionsand is one of the members of the dairy team that is headed tostate. His favorite part of FFA though, is showing dairy at thecounty fair.

The one aspect of FFA that stands out for Jackie is the factteamwork is important to completing projects. A favorite isorganizing the annual Ag Day dinner. “Friends of Ag” includ-ing ag producers, business owners, alumni, staff and thoseinvolved in farm related businesses are among the invitedguests. A complimentary meal is served and display boothsare set up by the FFA and ag class members.

New friendships and sharing the same interests over theyears with other FFA members are what Jackie and Nate saythey’ve gained the most from FFA. Also, long after graduat-ing from K-M they will be using life skills they learned fromtheir involvement in the Future Farmers of America.

FFA leadership benefit from FFA involvement

Nathan Suhr is vice-president and Jackie Marquardtis president of the K-M FFA chapter. Long after graduat-ing this spring the two leaders believe they will be prac-ticing the life skills learned while involved in the FFA.

classifiedsThe effects of hunger for an

individual or family can rangefrom poor health and slowedrecovery from injury or illness to poor performance at schoolor work. With 1 in 6 people facing hunger issues, a growingnumber of Minnesota households are turning to food shelvesfor help. During 2012, Semcac Food Shelves in Rushford,Preston, Caledonia, and Kasson assisted over 1,327 house-holds with supplemental or emergency food.

During March the annual statewide FoodShare campaignpromotes the collection of food and funds to stock the state’sfood shelves. As an official participant in the MinnesotaFoodShare campaign, Semcac’s Food Shelves will receive apercentage of the undesignated statewide FoodShare funds. The allocation depends on the amount of food and moneyraised locally during March and on the number of peopleserved during the remainder of the year. Semcac is also par-ticipating in the nationwide Feinstein Challenge-in which $1million will be divided among participating hunger fightingagencies equal to their proportion of the total amount of foodand money collected.

Semcac is asking local service clubs and organizations, businesses, churches, and individuals to help raise food andfunds. During March, please bring donated funds, food, andpersonal care items to your local Food Shelf from 9:00 a.m. to4:00 p.m., Tuesdays or Thursdays. Taxable and Nontaxable Income

The Tax GapThe tax gap is defined as the amount of tax liability faced by taxpayers that is not paid on

time. The Internal Revenue Service collects more than $2 trillion annually in taxes so pro-ducing an estimate of the tax gap is a major statistical effort that it undertakes every few years.

This month, the IRS released a new set of tax gap estimates for tax year 2006. The new taxgap estimate represents the first full update of the report in five years, and it shows the nation’scompliance rate is essentially unchanged at about 83 percent from the last review covering taxyear 2001.
