quarry tile floor is in the
kitchen and bar area, with
new vinyl tile in the lounge
area, top of the stairs, and the
mens locker room. All the
plumbing was cleared o
blockage and we hope thiwill end all the leaking into
the mens and womens
locker rooms. New lights
were installed in the kitchen
entry by the office, and down-
stairs in the hallways. A
heater was installed in the
office. New sheet metal was
installed behind the grill area
that will help keep the area
cleaner. A walk-in beer
cooler was installed at the topof the stairs to keep more
kegs cold and allow them to
be hooked up in series which
will allow less loss of product
due to foaming. This cooler
will make us compliant with
the Health Department by
separating food and beer stor-
age. The freezer that was at
the top of the stairs was
moved to bottom of the stairs.

I am honored to be re-elected
president of the Duluth Curl-
ing Club by the Board of Di-
rectors. This year you will
see a lot of change at the curl-
ing club and the DECC.
We negotiated a five year
lease with the DECC. Rent
will be increased to $77,775
per year with a 2.25 % in-
crease each following year.
That is an increase of $12,000
from last season. The DECC
will also be charging us $25
per issued parking pass. Each
member will be able to pur-
chase a parking pass if they
want from the Duluth CurlingClub office and this fee will
go directly to the DECC. The
parking fee will increase $5
each year during the lease.
This is a lease we can work
with and have worked hard
over the past few years to
make sure we are solvent as
club to handle an increase in
rent. Not only does this num-
ber include renting the facil-
ity, it also includes all utili-
ties. One major change in the
lease agreement is that the
DECC will no longer guaran-
tee the floor. If there is an
issue in the future with the
plumbing in the floor, we will
have to find a solution and
cross that bridge if we ever
have to.
The DECC has spent the sum-
mer reroofing Pioneer Hall.
The roof will be insulated and
leak free. The DECC is also
in the process of repairing the
stairs from the skywalk to the
lower club room entrance.
The DECC also put a new
condenser on the ice plant.
The curling club Board of
Directors and Trustees ap-
proved and completed a re-
model of the bar and kitchen.
The old bar was removed and
replaced. Stacy Harter, an
architect and first year curler,
donated her time to design
and prepare drawings for the
project. Duane Holm put
together the contractors who
were St. Germains, Duluth
Sheet Metal, Upper LakesFood, B&K Electric, Carlson
Brothers Plumbing, and Brian
Giorgi (Baggs). A new

Womens President ReportHello Ladies!
Welcome back to another great year of womens curling. The ladies board has been working hard
throughout the summer to prepare for the 2011-2012 season. Most of our work has been in updat-
ing our clubs directory. The DCC membership directory has not been updated since the 2005-
2006 season. The ladies plan to have directories ready to distribute to members in early 2012.
Please verify your contact information when you stop in the office this fall to pay your dues.
Ladies League Wednesdays 7:00Curl in the only DCC league that is women only! Our ladies only league continues to be a high-
light on Wednesday nights. Please join us! Sign up as a team, not an individual. Teams will be
handicapped as in other DCC leagues. Do you need help finding a team? Let us know and we will
try to place you.

1: and ice maker were added to the
kitchen. The total cost was over
$100,000. Many members have helped
with the project along the way and I
would like to thank all of you. Charlie
Haslerud, Tommy George, and DickWicklund have been instrumental in
keeping the project on schedule. Thank
you guys for all your efforts. The new
bar looks and smells great!
The Board of Directors decided to
eliminate the Director of Curling and
Office Manager positions. A new posi-
tion, General Manager, will replace the
two positions. Dick Wicklund will fill
the new position along with help from
the Board. This will save the club
$7500 annually. I would like to thank
Kay for taking the office position many
years ago when the former Office Man-ager left. Another change is that Larry
Rappana will not be working on the ice
this year. I would personally like to
thank Larry for all the countless hours
that he has given to the club over the
years. As the season begins, we will
start to realize how much work Larry
has done unnoticed for the club. Thanks
Larry for all your time and effect with
the Duluth Curling Club.
Well, my letter is getting too long.
Please plan to attend the fall meeting

Director of CurlingP a g e 3
I just checked our website and the
countdown indicator shows 43
days, 4 hours and 14 minutes to
the start of the 2011/2012 leagues.
We expect to have ice available to
practice by October 22 or 23. The
Thursday leagues will start on
10/27/2011. Team registration will
open on October 1 and close on
October 16. Registration and
league offerings are part of the
newsletter and are also online.
There is room for more teams at
8pm on Tuesday (Open league)
and also 8pm on Thursday
(Mens). Ideally we should limit
leagues to 16 teams and eliminate
all byes, which eliminates the
playoff scheduling issues at sea-
sons end but we will continue to
allow up to 18 teams per league.
18 team leagues require 19 weeksfor a complete round robin sched-
ule and we only have 18 weeks
before playoffs begin. Flex games
will be needed in leagues with 18
teams. You have the entire season
to contact your opponent and play
this game. Contact me by email
with your scheduled time and I
will reserve ice for you.
There will be a league at 4pm onSundays for new and novice curl-
ers. It will be a non-competitive
league with a round robin schedule
designed to bring beginners into
our club. We plan to have experi-
enced curlers on the ice for the
first month to teach delivery,
sweeping, etiquette and strategy.
This will be a great league for
curlers with 5 years or less experi-
ence to introduce their friends to
curling. The club allows beginners
to use our brooms and sliders so
there is no equipment cost for the
first season. There will also be a
Wed 3:30 pm six end open and/ormixed doubles league.
Once again, the club needs the
membership to step up and volun-
teer to help organize and run the
many bonspiels we host. We also
need volunteers as league commis-
sioners and instructors to teach the
many groups coming to the club to
learn to curl. Please contact me if
you are interested.
We are very fortunate to have the
ice available for almost unlimited
practice; however there are some
common sense rules we need to
follow. IF YOU ARE THE
LAST PERSON LEAVING
THE ICE, PLEASE TURN OFF
THE LIGHTS. We must get bet-
ter at this or practice time could
become restricted. If you bring inguests, they must complete the
liability waiver form and sign in
the guest book on the table near
the ice entry door. We are a pri-
vate club and our insurance carrier
requires this.
If you are practicing, please throw
a rock or 2 before you use the nip-
per or rock boat. Many times
have seen curlers assume the ice
needs their special attention. You
may be following other practicing
curlers and the ice is fine. IF
YOU HAVE NOT BEEN
TRAINED HOW TO PEBBLE
OR USE THE OTHER ICE
EQUIPMENT, PLEASE DO
NOT PEBBLE OR USE THE
NIPPER AND ROCK BOAT.
THIS WILL ONLY MAKE
MORE WORK FOR THE ICE
CREW.
I look forward to a great season at
the Duluth Curling Club. 43 days,
4 hours and 30 minutes and count-
ing until the leagues begin.

The Duluth Curling Clubs afternoon recreational curling for seniors including men andwomen interested in learning the sportwill begin with a warm-up and instructional clinic at 1
p.m. Thursday, Oct. 27th. Once the season starts, senior curlers gather at 1 p.m. every Tuesday andThursday for club competition with several one-day mini-bonspiels planned, including a home-and-home rivalry with senior curlers from Eveleths Curl Mesabi Club.
The Afternoons on Ice senior curling consists of eight-end matches that follow a recrea-
tional rather than highly competitive format with curlers changing positions every two ends so eachteam member can play each position from lead to skip. Teams are formed at each session depend-ing who comes to play on that day and no league standings or won-loss records are kept.
The mini-bonspiels are held from 9 a.m. to about 3 p.m. on dates to be determined andteams are made up by random drawing, but curlers then stay in the same positions for each game. The day-long spiels include two four-end games in the morning rounds, a lunch, and six-endchampionship and consolation matches in the afternoon. The tentative exchange with Curl Mesabiseniors include two eight-end games with lunch in between.
All DCC members 55 and overmen and womenare invited to participate in the after-noon curling, even those who also curl in evening leagues. The club offers a reduced annual mem-
bership fee for retirees who curl only in the afternoon program. For more information on senior
curling, contact Ellis Johns at 724-3146.

The retirement of Larry Rappana fromour ice maintenance crew is a huge lossfor our club. Larry has been a loyal, dedicated ice maker for many years andwill be greatly missed by each and every
curler. Our thanks go out to Larry for hismany years of commitment to the DuluthCurling Club. Our club would not bewhere it is today without Larrys consis-
tent presence and expertise.
We have received several recommenda-tions from a USCA ice technician re-garding ice scraping, pebbling, andmaintenance techniques, which we planto follow this year and hope we can es-
tablish fun, yet competitive, curling ice.
This will require the help of some trainedvolunteers to assist with nightly icepreparation before league play. We are
asking that each league commissionerprovide two or three volunteers whowould be able to pebble and nip beforetheir league starts. An instruction sessionwill be held to train these volunteer tech-nicians. If you are interested, contact
your league commissioner.
The volunteers will be instructed in theproper pebbling and nipping techniquesand will be the only authorized people to
assist the crew with ice preparation.Consistency is extremely important inproducing good ice. A list of those vol-unteers who have received the trainingwill be posted at the ice door and all oth-
ers will be asked to refrain from makingany modifications to the ice surface.
Although, one of the favorite parts ofcurling is complaining about the condi-tion of the ice, the crew feels confidentthat the better part is the satisfactionevery one receives from good ice mainte-nance and a top notch playing surface.Step up and do your part if you are able.
Your club needs YOU! Good curling!
