It is common to have moreintermingling of spots on theears and on the underside ofthe body with the balance of

the body being evenlydistributed. The less the spotsintermingle the better.

Spotting can be from adime to a half dollar insize. (smaller on head, legs & tail). Since

ticking is NOT spotting, excessive tickingdetracts from breedtype. Spots larger than ahalf dollar also detractfrom breed type.

Dalmatian spotting is the breeds most distinguishing feature.

Spotting helps to establish breed type, along with the structure of

the dog. In the scale of points, 25 of the 100 points are assigned tocolor and markings. After subtracting for head, coat and

temperament, more than half of the points relate to structure or

function. Thus, both spotting and soundness are essential parts of

correct Dalmatian type, and one must not be over-emphasized at

the expense of the other. With spotting, a wide range of

acceptability is found in the Dalmatian. It is not unusual to find

variations in patterns and some intermingling of spots within the

acceptable range. What is a pleasing distribution is a subjective.

The outside range of acceptable patterns is determined by whether

or not the patter is so light, so heavy or the spotting is so

intermingled as to seriously detract from breed type.

    Correct

    Incorrect

Note the extended front reach and rear

extension along with a level topline. Herethe front and rear movement are in balance.Note the head carriage, not carried too highso as to shorten the stride.

Poor reach and drive Note the limitedforward reach and rear extension. This

may be a result of inadequate angulation inone or both ends. It is important that theangulation be balanced, or other movingfaults will occur. This dog will require moresteps than the correct gaiting dog to coverthe same amount of distance.

    Type Function (Movement) Spotting

25 points are assigned to color and markings.

After subtracting for head, coat, & temperament,

more than half the points (75 points) relate to

    structure or function.

Thus, both spotting and soundness are essential

    parts of correct Dalmatian type.
