Valentine’s Day is drawing near, and you know what that means: candies, chocolates and romantic dinners.

People all over the world, start a love trainHowever, this idea of setting aside a

specific “day for love” doesn’t merely take place in America.

In fact, countries all over the world celebrate Feb. 14 similarly to the way Valentine’s Day is celebrated in the States.

Valentine’s Day festivities take place all around the world.

From Poland, to Zimbabwe, to China, showing love for one another is important to all.

“Valentine’s Day is huge! It’s a big business”, said Bheko Dube, a senior from Zimbabwe. “People celebrate it really, really passionately.”

Going out to a nice dinner with your significant other and/or exchanging gifts are common gestures on Valentine’s Day.

Spoiling one’s lover is definitely something that is not reserved for Americans.

“If two people are married, the husband gives the wife flowers, a card, and most likely jewelry,” recent SMU graduate and Poland native David Kuzer said. “Wealthier people can pay for a singer at dinner.”

Romantic dinners and tableside entertainment may sound like the ultimate Valentine’s experience, but for those who can’t afford something so extravagant, stuffed animals are always a nice touch.

Taken as a small act of kindness here, exchanging stuffed animals can mean much more in other places.

“Back home do you know how much a teddy bear costs?” Dube asked. “The ones you can find at the Dollar Store, back home those would cost you, like, $100!”

Candies are a crucial part of the Valentine’s Day experience.

According to The Nielson Company, nearly 48 million pounds of chocolate candy are sold during Valentine’s week!

Giving candies to our valentines, although it doesn’t promote the healthiest of eating habits, does sweeten the evening a bit more (no pun intended).

Treats like lollipop hearts and boxes of Sweethearts are common among the store shelves during the month of February, but nothing says “I love you” like chocolate.

“We have these chocolates called baci- it means ‘kisses,’” Italian professor Damiano Bonuomo said. “It looks like a round chocolate with hazelnut inside, and each are wrapped in silver paper…with proverbs or sayings…that have to do with love.”

Modern Valentine’s Day is said to have derived from the ancient Roman holiday known as the Festival of Lupercalia, a celebration in honor of fertility observed on Feb. 15.

Once the rise of Christianity began to take place, many of the pagan holidays were adapted to fit Christian beliefs. In A.D.

467, the pope turned the former Festival of Lupercalia into the feast day of St. Valentine and moved it to Feb.14. Although the exact origin of Valentine’s Day remains unknown, other countries have stories that explain the reasoning behind their interest in the holiday.

“[In China] we have Valentine’s Day Aug. 19,” freshman Haoyi Yu said.

A legend surrounds the origin of the Chinese Valentine’s day, or Qing Ren Jie, which involves a farmer named Niu Lang and a goddess named Zhi Nu.

Niu Lang owned a cow that spoke to him one day about seven beautiful women bathing in a river.

While the women bathed, Niu Lang took the goddess Zhi Nu’s clothes that were lying on the riverbank.

“Niu Lang makes a promise with Zhi Nu”, Yu said. “Marry me and I will give you your clothes again.”

Another goddess in the heavens becomes angry with Zhi Nu because she falls in love with a mortal. The goddess whisks Zhi Nu back to the heavens, away from Niu Lang.

“They use magic to separate them.” Yu says. “Zhi Nu goes to the Star Vega and Niu Lang goes to the Constellation of Aquila.”

The Milky Way separates the two lovers from each other, but “on Aug. 19, we think there is a bridge that connects the two constellations so they get to meet,” Yu says.

This legend brings a whole new meaning to “star-crossed lovers.”

Although countries all around the world celebrate Valentine’s Day in many different ways, there is one universal aspect: love.

On this day, different peoples show their appreciation for those that mean the most to them. Love for others is something that never gets lost in translation.

Singles Awareness Day comes each year on Feb. 14. While couples make romantic dinner plans at expensive French restaurants, those without a significant other are left to wallow in their singleness.

So how does a single person survive the most romantic day of the year (as Hallmark would have you believe)?

Rent a MovieNo one is asking you to go out and

immerse yourself in the lovey-doveyness of the most romantic day of the year. Instead stay at home, get your favorite flick and enjoy some alone time. Don’t forget the popcorn, and tissues, as it’s pretty well known that single people on Valentine’s Day can’t stop sobbing over their misfortune.

Catch Up on Your ShowsWho has time to watch their favorite

TV shows when they actually air? Spend Valentine’s Day catching up on your favorite shows, like Lost or 30 Rock. This way, you can clean out your DVR while avoiding the mass PDA this day seems to require. Obviously, skip over the Valentine’s episodes (that the heartless networks have aired in spite of your singleness).

Make Plans With Other Single Friends

As the saying goes, misery loves company. Console each other or spend the evening making fun of those who did find a date. Either way, it’s sure to be fun. Maybe not as fun as if you had a date, but that’s the nature

of Valentine’s Day—it is, after all, the most romantic day of the year.

Do Something That You’ve Been Meaning to Do

Clean your room. Clean the bathroom. Do laundry. As long as you’re staying in that night, why not get a few chores done? Plus, the laundry room is guaranteed to be empty. There’s perhaps one drawback: doing laundry on the most romantic day of the year is weird and lame.

Avoid all Restaurants, particularly the French Kind.

For some reason, French restaurants are très romantique. Singles are advised to stay away at all costs. Good food, wine and music can only lead to heartache. Eventually you’ll just end up sobbing over your duck.

If You Decide to See a Movie in the Theater…

Make sure it’s not that recently released romantic comedy. (This year, they seem to have run out of creativity as it’s named after the very day.) It’s best to stick with action-adventure movies or children’s movies—ones that aren’t considered “date movies” (hint: avoid anything starring Julia Roberts).

Spend Time in Fondren StudyingIt couldn’t hurt.

Last But Not Least…Pay no attention to my earlier suggestions.

Valentine’s Day is just that: a day. Do whatever you want, and don’t let the “most romantic day of the year” stop you from doing something you’d really like to do just because you’re single.

Valentine’s Day is the single day out of the year that the United States publicly and collectively endorses love. This non-official holiday is surrounded by mixed feelings depending on one’s relationship status but is still largely recognized by most Americans. Participation in this potentially meaningful and romantic holiday requires one thing of its contributors: love must be expressed through the consumption of goods.

The simple premise for Valentine’s Day is to set aside a twenty-four hour period to show our significant others more appreciation and adoration than usually exhibited.

Dating back to the 1400s, hand-written love letters and Valentine’s were the most commonly accepted way of displaying these heightened annual emotions come mid-February. But when time became an expensive commodity, men and women searched outside themselves for an easier and quicker way to say, “I love you.”

When Esther A. Howland created the first commercial Valentine’s Day card in 1840, corporate American saw an opportunity to capitalize. Greeting card companies, chocolate factories, and 1-800-Flowers quickly realized that the majority of Americans felt compelled to demonstrate love properly through the transfer of goods and services. It is estimated that just north of 200 million cards will be exchanged this year, 58 million pounds of chocolate will be sold, and 74 percent of all Americans will celebrate. Celebrate, of course, meaning partaking in the consumption of Valentine-specific goods.

Unfortunately these days, cards are not enough. Flowers, chocolates, plush animals, homemade baked goods, and other perishable items are not only a nice addition to a cleverly published greeting card, but an expected token of affection. However, if these gifts are supposed to have hidden Da Vinci Code messages about the status of our relationships—are perishable items really appropriate? Perhaps we should reconsider these cultural norms strongly associated with red roses. After all, even roses have their thorns and only carry a shelf life of two weeks.

Despite the fact that Valentine’s Day has emerged as a tragic “Hallmark Holiday,” February fourteenth is the day circled (potentially heart-ed) in red Sharpie marker on every girl’s calendar as the one day not to forget.

Seriously though, how devastating could it possibly be if dates were not properly secured, reservations not finalized and the perfect gifts not purchased? How else are we to symbolize our love for one another? Further, how else do we prove other people love us?

It is a sad reality that nearly 15 percent of women in the United States send themselves flowers to ease the social embarrassment of not having a date or a significant other. What was meant to be a day dedicated to celebrate love has become yet another moment in commercial America to prove our worth through material goods. The most disconcerting part, however, is that our culture demands our worth to be wrongfully placed in another’s hand demonstrated each February fourteenth.
