Numerous control valves can beincorporated in the basic packages to meet awide variety of system requirements. Thesesystems are typically applied in mobileapplications where a common reservoir isaccessible.

Haldex’ expertise in designing, applying andproducing D.C. motor/hydraulic pumpassemblies is highly regarded within theindustries that we serve. We are considered asource of knowledge in this area by thematerial handling industry, aerial lift industryand the construction equipment industry,among others.

Material Handling IndustryThe Material Handling Industry relies onHaldex’ knowledge and experience forapplications such as lift, tilt, power steering andauxiliary functions on many types of industriallift trucks. These motor/pump units can bedesigned for pallet trucks that require separatemotor, pump and reservoir packages. Theseunits provide primary hydraulic power forlifting and other functions.

They can also be designed for high reachstackers that require separate motor, pump andreservoir packages as well. They provideprimary hydraulic power for lifting and, undercertain applications, can provide secondarypower for fork carriage extension or side-to-side shift operation.

Narrow aisle or 3-wheel sit down forklifts alsotypically require separate motor/pump andreservoir packages. These units provideprimary hydraulic power for lifting and vehiclesteering along with secondary power for forkcarriage extension or side-to-side shiftoperation.

Aerial Lift IndustryThe Aerial Lift Industry also relies on Haldex’long history of success in applying D.C.motor/pump assemblies for it’s equipment.Our systems are well suited for auxiliary /secondary lowering requirements for off-highway vehicles, lift platforms, or boomapplications where the primary hydraulic sourcebecomes nonfunctional or unavailable. Theymay also be used for minor jib or basketadjustments by the operator.

These motor/pump units are also designed forscissor and boom lift vehicles as the primarypower source. These units provide hydraulicpower to propel, raise and steer the vehicles.

Construction IndustryIn the Construction Equipment Industry, weare called upon for assistance with tractiondrive applications as well as the lift functionsfor aerial devices.

Also, many construction machines require asupplemental source of hydraulic power whenthe primary source becomes nonfunctional orunavailable. Examples of these include largehoists, cranes and wheel loaders. Haldex’ D.C.motor/hydraulic pump assemblies are ideallysuited to meet these needs.

Haldex’ D.C. motor construction is also wellsuited for applications in off-highway equip-ment where the conditions are harsh andrugged performance is required. For example,power units can be constructed with heavy dutystart switches and insulated wiring boots.

The mating of a D.C. motor and hydraulicpump into an assembly and the application ofthese assemblies is dependent on a diverse setof variables. Each application varies incomplexity. Complete knowledge of theunique characteristics of individual D.C.motors is essential and, of course, expertknowledge of individual hydraulic pumpperformance is necessary. But the merging ofD.C. motors and hydraulic pumps is a technol-ogy all its own. And, it is in this area thatHaldex excels.

MOTOR FEATURES OFFERED

MOTORS . . .Haldex offers an extensive range of D.C.motors from 12 to 48 volts. The twomotor designs that are incorporated in themajority of our applications are thepermanent magnet type and the woundfield type. Under these broad categories,there are numerous combinations ofvoltages, frame sizes and duty ratingsavailable.

Permanent MagnetMotors with permanent magnet excitationare characterized by simple design.Because the magnetic field is created bypermanent magnets, excitation of themotor is constant under all operatingconditions. The speed variation vs. torquewill remain relatively consistent over themotor’s operating range.

Series Wound FieldIn Series-Wound Field motors, theexcitation and armature windings are bothelectrically operated with the currentpassing through the armature. SeriesWound motors, therefore, develop highinitial torque which decreases sharply asthe motor speed increases.

Listed below are the standard featuresavailable on Haldex’ D.C. motors. A briefexplanation of these features is alsoincluded for each section.

VoltageHaldex offers a full range of D.C. motorcapabilities from 12 to 48 volts.

Single or Double TerminalHaldex offers single terminal motorswhere the motor is internally grounded.Cost savings is achieved by eliminatingadditional wiring. We also offer doubleterminal motors where an external groundis required.

Several Sizes andConstructionWe offer the standard 4½ inch diametermotors as well as 3 and 5 inch diameter.Available features include open drip proof,thermal protection and sealed designs.

Start SwitchesHaldex offers start switches which can bemounted in a variety of locations to suityour applications. We offer 3 terminal and4 terminal (U.L.) switches in heavy dutydesigns, with or without boots.

Various MountsHaldex offers a number of standard motormounting brackets and will work to meetyour specific mounting requirements.Shown here are foot mounts, pump/statormounts, and horseshoe mounts.

U.L. ApprovalHaldex can provide Direct Current electricmotors intended for use in the electricbattery powered industrial truck market.These motors are intended to comply withthe requirements of UL 583 for Type E,ES or EE industrial trucks.Permanent magnet motors generally run at

a nominal speed of 1800 RPM (althoughother speeds are available). These motorshave a lower stall torque than wound fieldmotors, but are more efficient and exhibitsuperior thermal characteristics whichmake them more suitable for continuousduty applications. Some of the mostcommon applications of permanentmagnet motors are power steering and fuelsystems.

Wound field motors are higher speedmotors which exhibit a very high stalltorque. Their thermal characteristics aresuch that they can generate higher powerlevels for short periods of time. Woundfield motors are available with differentduty ratings. At Haldex these motors areclassified as standard duty (usually singleterminal motor, totally enclosed non-ventilated (TENV), with sleeve typebearing and 4½ inch diameter), mediumduty (usually has ball bearing in rearhousing, U.L. approved, totally enclosednon-ventilated (TENV), 4½ inch diametermotor and duty cycle is somewhat longerthan standard depending on application)and heavy duty (usually 2 terminal, 5 inchdiameter motor, open ventilated fancooled (OVFC), exhibiting longer dutycycles, depending on application).

The above are distinguished by motordiameter or frame size, and the ability todissipate heat at different current levelsover a specific time interval. In general,wound field motors are used in applica-tions where the loads are higher andgreater speed is required but only on anintermittent basis. Wound field motors areload sensitive and speed will vary with theapplied load; performance curves arerequired to determine the output at agiven point. Applications include liftfunctions on aerial devices and materialhandling equipment as well as auxiliarypower steering on construction equipment.

PUMP FEATURES OFFERED

PUMPS . . .The Haldex line of high quality cast iron andaluminum bodied gear pumps range in sizefrom .065 in.3/rev. to 2.40 in.3/rev. (1.06 to39.32 cc) displacements. The two pumpstyles offered are fixed clearance andpressure balanced. These two pump stylesdiffer in design and in the volumetricefficiency they exhibit under variousconditions.

Choosing a Pump . . .Choosing the type of pump is determined bya number of factors that are inter-related.The system pressure requirement maycompletely dictate the type of pump requiredand the motor may have to be sized accord-ingly. When the selection of a pump type isnot dictated, overall efficiency (as it relates tochoosing the most economical D.C. motorand the cost of operating the vehicle) mustbe considered. In many cases, where highpressure, high duty cycle or low viscosityfluid are not factors, a fixed clearance pumpis the most economical design to use. Theseunits are less expensive, and their volumetricefficiencies at low to moderate pressures arecomparable to pressure balanced pumps.

Volumetric efficiency is the actual flow a pumpproduces relative to the theoretical (ormaximum) flow it could produce if it had nointernal losses. The two major leak pathsthat determine volumetric efficiency in a gearpump are between the gear tips and thehousing, and between the gear faces and thehousing. Reducing the leakage over the geartips is a function of being able to holdcomponent parts to precise and exactingtolerances. We have demonstrated over manyyears that we have the equipment andexpertise to consistently provide the requiredprecision in the fabrication of the compo-nents used in our gear pumps.

To reduce the leakage between the gear faceand the housing, the pressure balanceddesign has been developed. This designincorporates floating bearing blocks in thepump housing on the sides of the gear faces.As pressure is developed by resistance to thepump’s flow, it creates a hydraulic forcewhich tends to push the bearing blocks awayfrom the gear faces. However, this force isbalanced by an opposite pressure which isapplied on the opposite side of the block viaa port behind the block. As the pressurelevel increases, the opposite pressure on theblock increases to insure that the clearancebetween the bearing block and the gear faceis the smallest possible without creatingexcess friction which would effect themechanical efficiency of the pump. Pressurebalanced pumps are well suited for applica-tions where lower viscosity fluids, highertemperatures, or higher pressures and dutycycles are encountered.

In applications where fixed clearance pumpefficiency is not adequate, the pressurebalanced design may be desired because ofthe higher volumetric efficiency. Highervolumetric efficiency on the pump sidetypically results in faster machine cyclespeeds. Cycle speed is important in mostbattery powered mobile equipment applica-tions because battery life is rated in amp./hours. The less time that amps are beingdrawn from a battery pack, the longer thebattery pack will last before recharge orreplacement. In most applications, overallefficiency of pressure balanced pumps ishigher than that of fixed clearance pumps.The understanding of how the overallefficiency of a pump varies based ondifferent application parameters is critical tothe selection of the optimum D.C. motor fora specific motor/pump application. Haldexhas many years of experience in this area.

Listed below are the standard features availableon Haldex’ pumps. A brief explanation ofthese features is also included.

GC SeriesFixed Clearance PumpsHaldex GC Series hydraulic pumps are high-efficiency cast iron gear pumps designed forreliability and long-life performance underrugged conditions. GC Series pumps are builtwith cast iron bodies and hardened steel gears.They are suitable for use in a wide variety ofapplications.

W SeriesPressure Balanced PumpsThe pressure balanced W Series hydraulicpump offers outstanding performance,flexibility, high efficiency, low noise perfor-mance and a variety of options to suit a widerange of equipment needs. It features athrough-bore bushing type design construction.

Split Gear PumpsA Split Gear pump incorporates two gearsoffset by one tooth to obtain the desireddisplacement. By offsetting the teeth of thegears, the number of pressure pulses isincreased and the magnitude of these pulses isdecreased; therefore, reducing any noise causedby the pump.

Multiple PumpsMultiple pumps provide multiple hydraulicfunctions from one power source at a signifi-cantly lower cost than separate pumps. Somecan also be sealed between sections to allow forindependent circuit operation without mixinghydraulic fluids.

High/Low PumpsTwo-Stage High/Low pumps provide twosection flow for high speed positioning, andunload one section of the pump at a predeter-mined pressure to provide a maximum workingpressure.

Pressure Balanced PumpsThis design incorporates floating bearingblocks in the pump housing on the sides of thegear faces. As pressure is developed by thepump, it creates a hydraulic force which tendsto push the bearing blocks away from the gearfaces. However, this hydraulic force is balancedby an opposite pressure which is applied on theblock via a port behind the block. As thepressure level increases, the opposite pressureon the block increases to insure that theclearance between the bearing block and thegear face is at the smallest possible incrementwithout creating excess friction which woulddecrease the mechanical efficiency of thepump.

Adjustable Relief ValveHaldex’ external gear pumps are available withintegral adjustable relief valves. Tamper proofversions are also available.

Check ValveHaldex’ external gear pumps can incorporateintegral check valves. All Haldex’ check valvesfeature hardened steel seats.

Solenoid L-H-L ValveHaldex’ external gear pumps can incorporatelift-hold-lower valve circuits, integral to thepump housing and electronically actuated byeither a 12, 24, 36 or 48 volt D.C. UL approvedcoils.

Unload ValveHaldex’ external gear pumps can be designedwith an unload valve to optimize systemperformance and vehicle operation.

Solenoid w/Manual OverrideThe solenoid actuated valve option can includea manual override feature to allow for manualactuation of the valve.

Load Sense ValveLoad Sensing is a hydraulic circuit configura-tion which allows the load, as sensed at thecontrol valve, to modulate pump output inrelation to system demand. Controlling bothflow and pressure at the pump allows for asignificant reduction in valving losses andcircuit inefficiencies. This provides many ofthe operational benefits of a piston pump withthe performance, reliability and cost advantagesof a gear pump.

SAE Side/Rear PortsHaldex’ standard porting is SAE (StraightThread O-Ring) side ports. This type of portoffers greater resistance to leakage and is moreserviceable than other port styles. SAE rearports are also available.

Inlet TubesOversized inlet tubes are available on Haldexpumps to ensure proper fill and fluid inletconditions.

Drive Systems . . .The other critical element to be consideredwhen specifying a D.C. motor/pump unit foryour application is the drive system. Drivesystem failure is known to be a significantproblem in many D.C. motor/pump applica-tions today. Haldex has both the product and awealth of application expertise in this area toensure that your D.C. motor/pump unitincorporates the correct drive system for yourapplication requirements. The followingdescriptions define the four (4) drive systemsavailable for Haldex D.C. motor/pump units.

Tang Drive SystemA .171” wide tang for GC pumps and a .244”wide tang for PB (Pressure Balanced) pumpsare the most durable standard tang drivesoffered. These wider tangs provide greatertang / shaft engagement, thereby reducing theplay between the shaft and tang. Reduced playresults in reduced wear of the tang duringmotor starts and longer drive system life.

Extended DutyTang Drive SystemFor higher duty cycle or high torque applica-tions, we have developed the Haldex’ extendedduty tang drive. This innovative drive reducesaxial play between tang and shaft to a minimumby means of a wave washer placed behind theball bearing on the shaft. This washer keeps aconstant spring load on the shaft to ensuremaximum tang engagement at all times.

Flexible CouplingDrive SystemThis drive system eliminates all metal to metalcontact by means of a rubber spider whichengages inside two metal coupling housings.The material Haldex has selected for its flexibledrive coupling exhibits superior resistance todeformation and wear. This system providesmaximum torque transfer and quiet operationand is primarily used for continuous dutyapplications.

SAE 9 Tooth SplineDrive SystemThis drive system allows for direct pump/motor spline connection to distribute highertorque and duty cycle operation with lowernoise levels emitted from the pump/motorcombination.

BOOM LIFTSSecondary Lowering

Auxiliary Power Units

These pump and motor power units are designed for applications requiring auxiliary hydraulic power. Typicalapplications are for truck, mobile crane and boom equipment. These power units are well suited for auxiliary /secondary lowering requirements for off-highway vehicles, lift platforms, or boom applications when the primaryhydraulic source becomes disabled or nonfunctional. They may also be used for minor positioning adjustments bythe operator.

Unit complexity can range from a simple pump and motor unit without any valving, to units that incorporatepressure holding check valves and over-pressurization protecting relief valves. Units range in size from light duty3 inch motors to medium duty 4.5 inch motors.
