10 Great Moments in Dragons History

1) April 27, 2000: Dragons First Opening Day The Dragons first home game ever played at Fifth Third Field took place after a season-opening 16-game road trip that allowed for extra time to bring the ballpark closer to completion. The Dragons defeated Cedar Rapids 4-3 before a crowd of 8,833. James Manias threw the first pitch and was credited with the win. Austin Kearns scored the first run and Casey Bookout hit the first home run. 2) July 17, 2000: The start of Austin Kearns’ Assault on the Record Books From July 17-24, Dragons outfielder Austin Kearns enjoyed a week for the ages. Kearns hit home runs in eight straight games while going 18 for 25 (.720) with 10 home runs, 20 runs batted in, 19 runs scored, and 10 walks. Kearns’ home run streak

ended two short of the all-time Minor League record set in 1928. 3) 2001: A Season-Long Home Run Derby at Fifth Third Field The 2001 Dragons featured a collection of home run hitters never matched in team history. Four players, Samone Peters, Wily Mo Pena, Randy Ruiz, and Stephen Smitherman, all hit at least 20 home runs that year as the team hit 144, to set a club record that has never been approached. Peters’ 28 is still the club record. 4) June 15-July 8, 2002: 13-Game Winning Streak The Dragons closed out the first half by winning their final two games, then opened the second half by going 11-0 to record for consecutive victories that still stands. Amazingly, Dragons starting pitcher Bobby Basham fired three straight nine-inning complete game shutouts during the winning streak, a feat that will likely never be matched in the new era of lower pitch counts for starters.

5) June 20, 2006: Bruuuuuuuce Expectations were high for former first round draft pick Jay Bruce entering the 2006 season, but the 19-year-old Texan was up to the challenge as he spent the entire season with the Dragons. On June 20, he was named the “Star of Stars” of the Midwest League All-Star Game after collecting three hits including a home run. Baseball America picked Bruce as the league’s Prospect of the Year. Just two years later, he debuted with the Reds and started a streak of six straight seasons with at least 20 home runs. 6) April 5, 2007: The Best Start in Baseball The Dragons roster looked strong to begin the 2007 season, but who could have predicted the way the team opened the year? The Dragons won their first nine games and their record stood at an incredible 23-4 after 27 games. The team was led by several future Reds. Their hottest hitter was shortstop Chris Valaika, while outfielders Drew Stubbs and Chris Heisey, second baseman Justin Turner, and third baseman Juan Francisco were all big contributors. 7) July 9, 2011: Dragons 815 The Dragons extended their sell-out streak to 815 games, surpassing the NBA’s Portland Trail Blazers for the longest in the history of sports in North America. The streak now stands at 1,316 and is still active. 8) Sept. 3, 2011: Run, Billy, Run Electrifying shortstop Billy Hamilton broke the Dragons team record for stolen bases in a season before the end of May, and in the final series of the regular season in September, he reached the century mark. Hamilton finished the year with 103 steals, the most ever by a Reds major or minor league player. He broke his own record the following year. 9) July 31, 2017: Siri-mania Dragons center fielder Jose Siri produced a 39-game hitting streak from June 22-August 3 to break a 40-year-old league record set in 1977 at 35 straight games. Siri’s record-breaking hit came on an 0-2 pitch in his final at-bat of the game at Fort Wayne. Siri was the Midwest League’s best player in 2017, finished first or second in the league in eight major categories including home runs, slugging percentage, extra base hits, stolen bases, runs, and hits. 10) July 26, 2018: Fastest of the Fast Dragons starting pitcher Hunter Greene fired a 102 mph fastball with his final pitch of the first inning against Fort Wayne, getting a called third strike. The pitch broke the Fifth Third Field record for fastest pitch, eclipsing the previous record of 101 set by, among others, Reds reliever Aroldis Chapman on an injury rehabilitation assignment.

Mike Siani, outfielder Siani, 19, was the Reds fourth round draft pick in 2018 out of a Philadelphia high school. His signing bonus of $2 million was the second largest of the Reds draft, trailing only first round pick Nick Senzel. Siani opened his professional career with the Greeneville Reds in the Appalachian League, where he batted .288 with two home runs in 46 games as an 18 year old. He was considered one of the best defensive outfielders in the entire draft last June. He has good speed and a very strong arm in center field. He spent two years with the USA Under-18 national team, playing in some big games against top-level competition. Mauriel Bautista, outfielder Bautista, 21, from the Dominican Republic, was the best player on the Billings team last season, playing mostly center field. He hit .330 with eight home runs in 56 games. He has good speed and plays good defense. James Marinan, starting pitcher Marinan, 20, was acquired in a trade last summer from the Dodgers after being selected by LA in the fourth round of the 2017 draft out of high school in Lake Worth, Florida. He pitched at Billings last season and posted a 3.98 ERA in the very hitter-friendly Pioneer League (league average ERA was 5.06). His fastball tops out in the mid-90s. He has good size at 6’5”, 220 lbs. Jonathan Willems, second baseman Willems, 20, is from the same hometown as former Dragons Hendrik Clementina, Didi Gregorius, and Calten Daal (Willemstad, Curacao). He played at Greeneville last season and showed a good bat, finishing the year at .263 (he was still over the .300 mark as late as August 8) with eight home runs in 55 games. Bren Spillane, outfielder.first baseman Spillane, 22, won the Triple Crown in the Big Ten in 2018 at the University of Illinois and was picked by Collegiate Baseball newspaper as the national Player of the Year. He was also the Big Ten Player of the Year as he turned in one of the biggest seasons in the history of the conference. At Illinois in 2018, he hit .407 with 22 home runs and a .944 slugging percentage that led the nation. The Reds drafted Spillane in the third round last June and assigned him to Billings, where he batted .236 with five home runs in 48 games. Jared Solomon, starting pitcher Solomon, 21, was the best pitcher in the Pioneer League last season at Billings, posting a 2.27 ERA in nine starts but finished a few innings short of qualifying for the title (the league leader finished at 2.85) when he was called up to the Dragons for six late-season starts. Solomon was the Reds 11th round draft pick in 2017 out of junior college in Pennsylvania. His fastball can reach the mid-90s. Rylan Thomas, first baseman Thomas, 21, has pure home run power would rival any player in the Reds farm system. Fangraphs.com grades his raw power as a 70 on the 20-80 scale. Thomas played for former Wright State head coach Greg Lovelady at the University of Central Florida and was the best hitter last spring on a team that missed by a whisker of reaching the NCAA tournament. Thomas hit 13 home runs and batted .343 at UCF in 2018. After signing with the Reds, he played at Greeneville and hit 10 more home runs in 55 games. Miguel Hernandez, shortstop Hernandez, 19, is from Venezuela. He is ranked higher by some observers (RedsMinorLeagues.com ranks him as the Reds #16 prospect). He hit well for Greeneville last season, batting .301, and is viewed as an above-average defensive shortstop with a strong arm and good speed.

Other Possible 2019 Dragons Players—Additional Notes Miles Gordon, outfielder Gordon was a starting outfielder for the first two months of the 2018 season, but he suffered an injury in early June that cost him the rest of the season. He was ranked by nearly everyone as a Reds top-30 prospect entering the 2018 season. He hit .211 for the Dragons after batting .319 with eight home runs and a .530 slugging percentage with Billings in 2017. Drew Mount, outfielder Mount, 22, bounced back from a slow start at Billings last season to enjoy a huge second half and finish the year with strong numbers. After hitting .218 in 31 games in the first half, he hit .386 with a .576 slugging percentage in the second half and finished at .310 with eight home runs. He played at Kansas State University and was the Reds 16th round draft pick in 2018. Dylan Harris, second baseman Harris, 24, came out of nowhere to enjoy a strong season at Billings in 2018. He was not drafted out of NCAA Division 2 Nova Southeastern University despite batting .403 with 10 home runs last spring. The Reds signed him as a free agent and he responded by hitting .314 at Billings, often serving as the Mustangs lead-off hitter. Jacob Heatherly, Nick Hanson, Lyon Richardson, Starting pitchers All three players listed here were drafted out of high school within the first three rounds by the Reds and received signing bonuses ranging from just under $1 million to nearly $2 million. All three have very limited professional experience and could start the year in extended spring training and join the Dragons at some point. Heatherly and Richardson both pitched for Greeneville in 2018 with mixed success. Hanson is coming back from Tommy John surgery that caused him to miss all of 2017 and limited him to just four innings in 2018. Heatherly, a third round pick in 2017, probably has the best chance of the three young arms to make the Dragons team out of spring training after posting a strong finish to 2018. His ERA for the season was 5.82, but if you subtract his first two starts of the 11 he made, the ERA comes down to 3.60.

“The Streak” The Dragons broke the all-time sports record for consecutive sell-outs on July 9, 2011 when they recorded their 815th

straight sell-out. Each of the Dragons 70 home games in 2018 resulted in a sell-out, extending the Dragons sell-out streak to

1,316 consecutive regular season games. Every Dragons game ever played at Fifth Third Field has been a sell-out.
