Tioga Hills Families:

Below is a reminder about morning drop-off in our bus circle. This has been taken from the 2019-2020 Parent Handbook that was sent to families in September.

Parents should not drive into the bus circle between 8:30 and 9 in the mornings.

It is important that parents follow these procedures. This keeps our students safe and eliminates traffic congestion and the possibility of traffic accidents.

STUDENT “DROP-OFF” ZONE

The semicircular driveway in front of the school will be closed to ALL traffic except school buses during the following times:

8:30 - 9:00 A.M.

Please do not block or hinder the traffic flow. A “No Parking Student Drop-off Zone” sign was installed to help alleviate some congestion/confusion in the parking lot area. The student “drop-off” zone has been designated near the flagpole. Parents should only be dropping off students in this area in the morning. Do not park in the drop-off zone.

Also, there is "No Parking" along either side of the curb in the bus circle.

We appreciate your help in keeping our students safe!

Fr iend ly Reminders From The Health Off ice

Fifth-Grade Parents:

If you were able to attend the Sixth-Grade Parent Orientation at VMS onFebruary 27, I hope you found it helpful and informative. If you were notable to attend and have specific questions, please call me.

Thank you for returning the course selection sheet with your child’s music choice(s) for sixth grade. I have submitted these sheets to VMS to begin the scheduling pro-cess. You will receive a course verification sheet in the late spring. This is a chance for you to overview the courses that will be scheduled for your sixth-grader anddouble check that the music selection(s) you requested are correct in our system.

Each year I provide a basket of combination locks for sixth-graders to practice on,which will begin to be available during fifth-grade lunch time in March.Students may begin practicing the technique of opening this type of lock andcan sign out a lock for during lunch as often as they would like. We knowthat having a locker is a one of the bigger changes (and sometimes stressors)for students, so we begin this practice early to familiarize them with it. Feel

free to help at home if you have a combination lock to practice on! If you hap-pen to purchase a combo lock, save it as students will need those for seventh-grade Phys-Ed.

Together with the fifth-grade teachers, I will also be escorting our boys and girls on a visit and tour of the Vestal Middle School on May 19. Permission slips forthis field trip will be coming home in May.

Important Dates:

May 1: Permission slips come home for VMS tour (please return ASAP)May 19: Fifth-graders tour VMS

Please do not hesitate to call me if you have questions or concerns about the tran-sition!

In the classroom… In third and fourth grade, I will be teaching test-taking/stress-management strate-gies to help students during the upcoming state tests.

This spring, I will be visiting K through fifth-grade classrooms to teach personal safety and abuse prevention skills. The topics include stranger-danger, physical and sexual abuse prevention, and self-respect. These lessons will take place in one to two 30-minute periods. As school counselors, we are mandated by NewYork State Commissioner’s Regulations to provide this instruction.

Wishing you a Happy Spring and welcoming you to call if I can help in anyway!

Rhonda Ruhm, M.S.Ed, C.A.S. School Counselor

All visitors to Tioga Hills, before, during or after school hours, should only park in des-ignated parking spots. Please do not park on the grass (or muddy tire tracks may result this Spring), or on the side of the entrance to the school. Do not park in are-as not designated with painted stripes or signs, as emergency vehicles may have diffi-culty maneuvering. This is a matter of safe-ty, and your cooperation is greatly appreci-ated!

When dropping off children in the morn-ing, please have them exit the vehicle to the sidewalk and NOT the roadway. We have had too many close calls of children almost getting hit when exiting to the roadway.

RIA NEWS

Thank you for getting in your child’s school physical... Great job, everyone! NYS requires that all physicals for students in grades K, 1, 3 and 5 be written on the NYS Health Examination form. See Nurse Jane or the school website (hover over “Parents” and select the “Health Information & Forms” dropdown link to find this form and use it for all future physicals. Please send in all forms in an envelope labeled “Health Office” for confidentiality purposes.

Open Airways Program has been cancelled for 2020. Administration says the program will now be offered every other year.

Health Office Donations: Size 6-10 sweats or leggings are always appreciated. If your child comes home with school clothes, please wash and send them back with your child. Thank you!

If your child becomes sick at school, please make arrangements ahead of time. Students with a fever of 100.5 or greater or are vomiting will be sent home and should not return for 24 hours and are symptom-free.

Your kids need to be eat healthy to be healthy! Help them focus on making healthy food and drink choices from all five food groups daily. They also need to eat the right amount of calories for their age, sex, height and weight. A website resource is choosemyplate.gov. This lifelong habit starts at home (and the grocery store)!

Pack 43 continues to have an entertaining year as we

enjoyed the month of February. We were treated to a demonstration by some well-trained canines from our friends at Amigo Search and Rescue Dogs. Our oldest Scout, Raymond Mattice, had a great time being the subject of the search demonstra-tion as he was hidden outside on school grounds while the dog showed us what it can do. Later in the month, a large num-ber of our pack went to Scout Day at Greek Peak where they enjoyed the roller coaster, tubing, skiing and the water park. We then held our annual winter camping event, where the scouts got to hike, enjoy more snow tubing and outside winter fun, plus participate in the Bear Den's carnival games and shows and spend some fun times together in the cabins. In March, our Scouts will earn their current year's ranks and celebrate this achievement at the Blue & Gold Dinner. As always, feel free to contact our Cub Master, Steve Maj-ka at [email protected] if you'd like to learn more.

Family Bingo Night will begin at 7 p.m. on Friday, March 6, 2020, in the Café. Concessions, Prizes and a 50/50!

Please check out the flyer that was sent home for more information.

Come & join everyone for a night of Fun!

February, our Student Council representatives and our Helping Hands Committee visited Morning Meeting in the classrooms across the building to talk about Cooperation. They selected a greeting and cooperative activity to do with the class and shared what Cooperation means. The Fifth-graders also had to practice Responsibility by remembering the schedule and what they needed to talk about when they visited.

Here are some photos from those visits:

Our Fifth-grade Student Council has been quite busy this winter! In late January/early February, our “Soup”erbowl committee worked hard to get our collection up and running. They made posters, shared announcements each morning, and then helped to collect and count the cans from the classrooms at the end. Thanks to your efforts at home, we collected 202 cans for our T.H.E. Backpack program!
