Course Overview

OBJECTIVEThe Willowdene Experience has a very simple objective: to initiate, facilitate and nurture lasting change in the lives of its students.

STRUCTUREEach course comprises 12 one-day (5 hour) sessions over six consecutive weeks. Each cohort of six students receive: six days of dedicated skills training and six days of work experience in a real workplace environment.

TRAININGStudents engage with six specific training areas, ultimately focusing on the four training areas that are most appropriate for them. All training is provided by fully qualified instructors and results in a qualification or completion certificate upon completion.

WORK EXPERIENCEStudents work in a Social Enterprise that grows and supplies fresh produce to local businesses and households, which provides exposure to production processes, facility maintenance, inventory control, sales, and basic administration.

THERAPYThe course is underpinned by focused therapeutic input to help students unlock, engage with and address the root causes of their substance misuse. Students will have formal one-to one therapeutic sessions, as well as informal access to the Willowdene Rehabilitation therapist.

RESULTSStudents completing the Willowdene Experience will:• have demonstrable skills in at least four for the specific areas of training provided• have demonstrable experience of working in an active and productive workplace• have an accurate and professionally presented CV, experience of completing

application forms, and have experience of dealing with an interview situation• be actively engaged in a process of change and have a clearly defined and agreed

pathway to continue the progress post completion.

TrainingDelivered by fully qualified instructors with many years of experience of teaching hard-to-reach learners, the training offered on the Willowdene Experience is informal, relevant and practical.

Informal: Classroom-based learning is kept to a minimum, with the majority of learning taking place on the land, in workshops, and in the forest, allowing formal qualifications to be achieved in a safe and informal atmosphere.

Relevant: The Willowdene Experience is about equipping for the future, so all the training we offer is skills-based, which means that it is relevant to the workplace.

Practical: Theory generally doesn’t interest our students, so we have designed courses that weave the necessary theory elements into practical training, so learning is more about rolling up your sleeves than opening a book.

Too often the task of finding a job is thwarted by lack of experience. This is never more-so than for our students, whose chaotic lifestyles have taken them further and further away from gaining the experience they so badly need to build a future.

By partnering with an active Social Enterprise, we are able to provide each of our students with the opportunity to apply the skills they learn through their training in a real workplace that is safe and supportive.

It offers them a chance to develop a work ethic, to become familiar with workplace practice and become comfortable in working alone and as part of a team.

Students will be able to see real outcomes from the efforts they put in and will be able to work towards achieving a positive reference to take with them as they journey towards a working life

Every student will be offered:

• hands-on work with the growing and harvesting of produce

• animal husbandry through working with livestock

• sales experience through the sale of produce

• exposure to record keeping and inventory control

• grounds and buildings maintenance

• packaging and storage (warehousing)
