Have Fun at Summer Day and Evening Camp!In just a few months your daughter will be ready to attend one of the Summer Day and Evening Camps and the time to choose that camp is now! Year round thousands of Girl Scouts eagerly anticipate these camps. Why go to camp? There are a variety of fun activities from playing games, singing, swimming to high adventure. The themes and settings for camp are so different that each girl will easily find one that fits her own unique personality; the hardest part is choosing which camp to attend! This brochure is full of camps, not just for younger girls, but for teens as well. If you are looking for Sleep Away Camp opportunities please make sure you turn your attention to the Sleep Away Camp section of this brochure. Although both types of camp are Girl Scout traditions, take time to read each section carefully, as there is a different registration process and deadline for each. 1. Choose a camp Pick your camp; we have 37 camps throughout Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia. See the Camps at a Glance on pages 32-33.

2. Apply to Camp The application is now online at https://gsusa.ebiz.uapps.net/vp/Home/tabid/166/Default.aspx.Deadlines for applications• Note the application deadline for each camp is

different and is listed in the camp’s description.• Go online and apply for camp. Payment is due

at the time of application via credit or debit card. Detailed instructions are on the inside front cover.

Apply for Financial Assistance• Financial Assistance is available. Please go to

www.gscnc.org/Camps_for_Girl_Scouts.html and click on the Financial Assistance link to fill out the request before you apply for a camp. Please see page 33 for more information.

Apply to Volunteer at camp• Sign-up to volunteer by sending the Camp

Information Contact an email.

3. Receive notification from camp• Placement is not automatic. Each camp makes

their own placements either via lottery or first come, first serve. See specific camp for more details.

• The camp you apply for will make placements and notify you of acceptance by the Placement Notification Date.

4. At the Start of Camp• Read over your daughter’s acceptance letter to

be sure she is prepared. • Notify the camp of any changes to the health

history form, emergency contact information, etc.• If your daughter is bringing medication to camp

(both prescription and over the counter), fill out and have the Medication Permission form signed by a physician available at: http:/www.gscnc.org/daycamp_medication.html.

who’s eLiGiBLe?

Summer Day and Evening Camps are open to all Girl

Scouts.

We welcome non-Girl Scouts to attend camp. $12 Girl Scout membership and fee must be paid in order to register for camp.

All girls are requested to become registered Girl Scouts.

Boys and pre-school age children are eligible only in certain camps and only if they are the children of volunteer staff. Ages of boys may vary with camp. Reduced or waived rates may apply.

how to aPPLy

Make sure that each camper’s GSCNC Girl Scout membership is active and that each camper’s account has been activated and all edits have been made. See detailed instructions inside the front cover.

Camps are listed by state. Applications are only available online. Detailed information is included in this brochure on the inside front cover.

Be prepared to pay the full camp fee while applying

(unless applying for financial assistance) with a credit or debit card. Confirmation letters, bus schedules, etc. will be emailed as girls are placed.

Financial assistance is available. Please fill out the Financial Assistance request online before you apply for camp, as it is needed to reduce your fee to be paid when you apply.

Any questions on a specific camp should be referred to the Camp Information Contact volunteer of the camp you are interested in.

Register early – spaces fill quickly. Check individual camp for application opening and closing dates.

Please apply for only one camp! Space in all camps is limited. Let’s allow as many children as possible to experience the fun of a Girl Scout summer camp.

Please note that your child MUST be able to stay for the duration of the program (emergency circumstances notwithstanding).

Fees quoted in this brochure vary from camp to camp. The differences in the fees represent the wide variety of programs available throughout the council area. Please

compare your daughter’s interests with the available camps to ensure an enjoyable experience. Financial assistance is available for families who need help in order to make camp affordable. (See financial assistance section.)

fees

Note the fees for the camp program of your choice. Full payment will be due at the time of application by credit or debit card.

Fees may be reduced or waived if the child’s parent is a camp volunteer/staff member or if the child is serving as a Camp/Program Aide or Aide-in-Training. Contact the Camp Information Contact of the particular camp before applying for camp for more information.

Fees may go towards site rental, craft and program supplies, health care supplies, transportation, stipends, food and beverage costs, office supplies, postage and other expenses.

finanCiaL assistanCe

The Girl Scout Council of the Nation’s Capital attempts to make camp available to all girls regardless of the family’s economic situation.

Those in need of financial assistance must complete the financial assistance request available online at www.gscnc.org/Camps_for_Girl_Scouts.html before applying for a particular camp.

Wait for an email confirmation of financial aid approval and code to be used when applying for camp.

If more than one family member is requesting financial assistance, please complete a separate request for each child.

In order to allow as many campers as possible to experience camp, financial assistance will only be approved once per camper per summer.

Any funds granted will be sent directly to the camp.

All application information is strictly confidential.

GirLs with sPeCiaL needs

GSCNC offers opportunities for girls with special needs, including physical or developmental disabilities, to be included in our summer day and evening camps. They can join other girls their age for swimming, hiking, singing and other camp activities.

Camp is available to ALL girls who:

• Have physical and or developmental disabilities

• Have special dietary restrictions

• Require special medications or treatment (Epi-Pen, neubulizer, etc.)

• Require injections (insulin, HgH, etc.)

If your daughter has a disability, she is welcome to attend our summer day and evening programs. To ensure that your daughter is placed in a camp and unit that best suits her needs, please call the Inclusion Specialist at (202) 534-3791 or (800) 523-7898 ext. 251 before completing your daughter’s application.

voLunteers

Adult and teen volunteers are needed in all areas. Camp programs or units without sufficient adult volunteer coverage may be cancelled or limited.

In some camps, special accommodations and reduced rates may be made available for volunteers and/or their children. For more information contact the Camp Information Contact listed for the camp you are interested in.

LeadershiP roLes for teen GirLs

Teen Girl Scouts are encouraged to participate in leadership roles. Reduced rates and/or other advantages may serve as compensation. For more information on a specific camp, refer to the Camp Information Contact. Depending on the camp, there may be opportunities for teen girls to serve as Program Aides, Camp Aides or Aides-in-Training.

Program Aide – A Girl Scout who has completed 6th grade or any grade above and has completed the GSUSA Program Aide core and specialty training. Program Aides may be required to take additional training specific to the camp. The Program Aide grade level may differ by camp. Contact the Camp Information Contact for additional information.

Aide in Training (AIT) or Camp Aide – Some camps have specialized trainings to volunteer as an AIT or a camp aide that offer teens an opportunity to gain leadership skills. The requirements to volunteer as an AIT or Camp Aide vary by camp. Contact the Camp Information Contact for additional information.

transPortation

Unless otherwise noted, transportation is the responsibility of the parent.

Carpools are strongly recommended and are usually arranged by parents.

mediCation

Medication, both prescription and over-the-counter, WILL NOT be administered at camp without the submission of a Medication Permission Form.

This form is mandatory only if you anticipate sending medication to camp with your camper.

aCCident insuranCe

Accident insurance is extended to all camp participants at no charge.

All camps operate under the health and safety guidelines of the Girl Scout Council of the Nation’s Capital and the jurisdiction in which they are located.

refund PoLiCy

If the camper is not placed into the camp applied for, you will be issued a full refund of the camp fee paid.

Refunds for Girl Scout membership will not be issued.

Consult the Camp Information Contact volunteer for each camp’s refund guidelines as stated in the acceptance letter. No full refunds after acceptance unless noted otherwise in acceptance letter.

CanCeLLations

For information on camp closures, refer to the emergency information contained in the camp confirmation letter.

at CamP

“A Girl Scout leaves a site cleaner than she finds it.” Each participant may be assigned to help with chores as part of the camp day.

If children are not picked up at the appropriate time, all efforts will be made to contact the parent/guardian and any emergency contacts. If these attempts fail, local authorities will be contacted.

CamP Behavior

The director and other staff of the camp will do everything possible to help girls adjust to camp life. However, the Girl Scout Council of the Nation’s Capital reserves the right to send home from camp any girl who consistently exhibits unsuitable behavior or endangers the camp community, or whose actions towards others are unacceptable. The girl’s parent/guardian is responsible for picking her up from camp in this case. There will be no refund.
