Technique 3 – Soft Blended Background (Wet-on-Wet)1. Draw a horizontal line on a watercolor paper

panel using a Clean Color watercolor marker.

2. Using a damp, flat paintbrush, apply water and blend the line in all directions to create a soft wash of color.

3. Draw a horizontal line in a second color directly on the damp color wash. The color will automatically start to blend into the previously applied color. This is known as a wet-on-wet technique.

4. Repeat Step 3 using different colors as desired to create the look you want.

5. Heat set to dry completely.

Technique 4 – Soft Blended Background (Wet-on-Dry)1. Draw a horizontal line on a watercolor paper

panel using any watercolor marker.

2. Using a damp, flat paintbrush, apply water and blend the line in all directions to create a soft wash of color.

3. Draw a horizontal line in a second color below the first color wash, and blend as before, working the second color into the first using your paintbrush.

4. Repeat Step 3 using different colors as desired to create the look you want.

5. Heat set to dry completely.

Technique 5 – Spray Water1. Draw large dots of various colors on a

watercolor paper panel using any watercolor marker.

2. Spritz the panel with water using a Mini Mister or other small, fine-nozzle spray bottle.

Hello Card1. Stamp an image in VersaMark ink on the

smooth side of a watercolor paper panel (a floral image shown here). Heat emboss the image using Gold embossing powder.

2. Stamp a greeting word in VersaMark ink below the floral image (“Hello” shown here), using a t-ruler as a guide for placement. Heat emboss the image using Gold embossing powder.

3. For each petal:

◆ Color in between the stamens in the center

of the petal and areas where shading would

naturally occur using a watercolor marker (pink

ink shown here).

◆ Using a damp, fine-tip paintbrush, pull the

color from the colored lines out into the petal

to create a soft color wash.

◆ Optional: Add extra water to intensify the

watercolor effect. Add more color in the center

of each flower and blend out with a damp

paintbrush, if desired.

4. For each leaf:

◆ Draw a line of color along the center vein of the

leaf and along the edges where shading would

naturally occur using a watercolor marker

(green ink shown here).

◆ Using a damp, fine-tip paintbrush, pull the

color from the colored lines out into the leaf to

create a soft color wash.

◆ Optional: Add more color and blend out with a

damp paintbrush, if desired.

5. For each area of stem or branch:

◆ Color the areas where shading would naturally

occur using a watercolor marker (brown ink

shown here).

◆ Using a damp, fine-tip paintbrush, pull the

color from the colored lines out into the petal

to create a soft color wash.

◆ Optional: Add more color and blend out with a

damp paintbrush, if desired.

6. Working in small sections, draw a line along the outside edge of the embossed image using a watercolor marker (blue shown here). Using a damp, fine-tip paintbrush, pull the color away from the image, blending it out into the rest of the panel, creating a color wash background. Repeat around the entire image.

7. Scribble some of the same background color onto an acrylic block to create a quick, DIY watercolor palette. Pick up the color using a damp paintbrush, and add color as needed to the background.

8. Allow the watercolors to dry completely. Trim the panel to remove any remaining white edges.

9. Apply a VersaMark inkpad directly to the edges of a White cardstock panel, cut slightly larger than the watercolor panel. Cover the inked areas with Gold embossing powder, and heat emboss.

10. Adhere the watercolor panel to the embossed panel to frame the watercolor in gold.

11. Stamp a diagonal stripe background in VersaMark ink on a top-folding Pink notecard (selected from the Sugar collection). Heat emboss using White Satin Pearl embossing powder.

12. Cut a piece of craft fun foam slightly smaller than the matted watercolor panel, and adhere the foam to the back of the panel. Adhere the foam-backed panel to the card.

Tips & Tricks to Note• By using watercolor markers to create multi-color blended

backgrounds, you can easily avoid creating a “muddy mess”.

• Take note: Watercolors will always continue to move after you’ve

stopped blending until they’re dry. To stop the process quickly, and

control how the water moves, use a heat tool to dry your work.

• A quick trick to prevent or reduce paper warping—spritz the back of

your watercolor paper panel with a bit of water.

• For any of these techniques, because you’re putting the color

directly onto your watercolor paper, you can use an alternative

medium to water. Try blending your color using a Wink of Stella

Glitter Brush or spritz your colored panel with shimmer mist.

• Start by coloring and blending out a small area—this way, if you’re

unhappy with the color, you can quickly dab away the color using a

soft paper towel. Then, simply re-color using a different marker.

Clean Color Real Brush Markersby Debby HughesCard sizes: 32" x 5"

Technique 1 – Bold Color1. Stamp an image in Onyx Black ink on

watercolor paper (leaf shown here). Heat set the image to dry before continuing.

2. Color sections of the image using three blendable colors (green, yellow, and blue markers shown here). Start with the main color (green), and then add highlights (yellow) and shading (blue). Repeat coloring as needed.

Technique 2 – Gold Embossed1. Prep a watercolor paper panel for embossing

by pouncing a powder tool or bag over the panel to reduce static.

2. Stamp an image in VersaMark ink on the prepared panel (leaf shown here). Heat emboss using Gold embossing powder.

3. Apply a single color along the embossed edges, and blend out using a damp paintbrush (green marker shown here).

4. Apply two additional shades (yellow and blue markers shown here) to create highlights and shadows. Blend using a damp paintbrush.

5. Heat set, and repeat Steps 3 and 4 as desired to create deeper color.

6. Optional: Use a gray marker to add deeper shadows.

Technique 3 – No Line1. Stamp an image in Antique Linen Distress ink

on watercolor paper (leaf shown here).

2. Go over the outline of the image using your main color (green marker shown here).

Page 6: Day 1 - Markers Watercolor Markers - Amazon S3...Copyright 2015 Online Card Classes, LLC. All rights reserved. DAY 1 - PAGE 7 7 2. Create DIY shimmer mist and spritz the panel, following

3. Blend the color from the lines toward the center of the image using a damp paintbrush.

4. Apply two additional shades (yellow and blue markers shown here) to create highlights and shadows. Blend using a damp paintbrush.

5. Heat set, and repeat coloring and blending with all shades, as desired.

Technique 4 – Direct-to-Stamp Coloring1. Color directly on a stamp using multiple

colors of markers (green, yellow, and blue markers on a leaf stamp shown here).

2. Stamp the inked image on a watercolor paper panel.

3. Optional: Create your own shimmer mist by mixing Perfect Pearls with water in a Mini Mister, or select a lightly iridescent shimmer mist. Lightly spritz the stamped image with shimmer mist. The ink will react and blend.

Leaf Tags1. Create leaf panels as demonstrated in the Day

1 video using Techniques 1-4.

2. Trim each panel, leaving a 4" border along the sides and bottom of the image and about 1/2” along the top edge.

3. Snip away the top corners and punch a 8" hole in the top of each panel to create tags. Optional: Die cut tags from the watercolor panels.

4. Thread each tag with natural twine.

Thanks Card1. Create a 3" x 42" background panel from

watercolor paper by repeatedly inking and stamping a leaf image following Steps 1 and 2 of Technique 4, as demonstrated in the Day 1 video. Rotate and vary the angle of each image as you stamp.

7

2. Create DIY shimmer mist and spritz the panel, following the optional Step 3 in Technique 4, as demonstrated in the Day 1 video. This creates a distress effect. Heat set the panel to stop the blending.

3. Embellish the watercolor panel by die cutting a notebook edge into the top edge of the panel, using a shim if needed by your die-cutting machine to cut through thicker cardstock.

4. Remove the spritzer from a bottle of Gold Lamé Color Shine, and spatter ink over the watercolor/notebook panel. Heat set to dry completely.

5. Apply Antique Linen Distress ink to the edges of the watercolor/notebook panel using a Mini Ink Blending Tool. Rumple the notebook edge of the panel, so it appears as if it was torn from a spiral notebook.

6. Apply Frayed Burlap or Brushed Corduroy Distress ink to the edges as desired using a Mini Ink Blending Tool.

7. Embellish the watercolor/notebook panel using two strips of script-printed washi tape.

8. Tear a piece of old book paper, and tuck it behind the watercolor/notebook panel. Secure using an antique mini paper clip.

9. Die cut a leaf cluster or vine from watercolor paper. Snip off a sprig of leaves to create a smaller die cut (if needed).

10. Position the die cut on a non-stick craft mat, and color the leaves using the same method shown in Step 2 of Technique 1. Blend the colors using a damp paintbrush. Heat set to dry completely.

11. Remove the spritzer from a bottle of Gold Lamé Color Shine, and heavily spatter ink over the leaf die cut. Heat set to dry completely.

12. Apply foam adhesive to the back of one of the leaves. Tuck the die cut into the paper clip on the watercolor/notebook panel, and secure using the foam adhesive.

13. Die cut a greeting word from Gold glitter cardstock (“Thanks” shown here).

14. Tuck the top loop of the die cut (“k” shown here) into the paper clip, temporarily securing it for placement purposes.

15. Prep a watercolor paper panel for embossing by pouncing a powder tool or bag over the panel to reduce static.

16. Stamp a complementary greeting in VersaMark ink on the prepared watercolor paper panel. Heat emboss using Gold embossing powder.

17. Trim the embossed greeting to create a greeting strip. Apply Antique Linen Distress ink to the edges of the greeting strip using a Mini Ink Blending Tool.

18. Adhere the greeting strip to the watercolor/notebook panel using foam adhesive. Secure the greeting word die cut using liquid adhesive.

19. Embellish the completed panel with Gold sequins, as desired.

20. Create a top-folding 4 Bar (32" x 5") card from Desert Storm cardstock. Stamp a diagonal stripe background in VersaMark ink on the card.

21. Clip the completed panel to the card using the mini paper clip, and secure the panel in place using foam adhesive.

Tips & Tricks to Note• The main difference between most markers and the Clean

Color markers is that the tip is actually a brush, which allows

you to vary the thickness of your lines by applying different

amounts of pressure.

• Clean Color markers offer better results when you use them

on watercolor paper. However, you will find that they blend

beautifully without water.

• Remember: You can always use a gray marker to add

shadows!

• When blending your markers directly onto cardstock, be

sure to scribble them off onto scrap paper to ensure no

blended color remains on your markers prior to storage.

Shapes and Masking with Markersby Kristina WernerCard size: 44" x 52"

Technique 1 – Repeated Drawn Shape Background1. Lightly draw shapes on a watercolor paper

panel using a pencil (traced circles shown here). Cover the entire panel with shapes to create a background design.

2. Secure your watercolor paper panel to a movable, water-resistant board using painter’s tape around the edges.

3. Using a damp paintbrush (size 8 or smaller), apply water inside one shape.

4. Using a true brush-tip watercolor marker, apply color to the top of the water-filled shape (wet-on-wet technique). Using your paintbrush, pull the color from the marker line down into the rest of the shape.

5. Repeat Step 4 as needed to fill the shape with water color. Do not pick up more water with your paintbrush—work with the water already in the brush.

6. Repeat Steps 3-5 to complete the first line of shapes.

7. For the next line, repeat Steps 4-5, without applying water to the shapes first (wet-on-dry technique). This creates a more intense result.

8. Alternating between wet-on-wet and wet-on-dry techniques and switching colors, completely fill each of the shapes in your background with color.

9. Heat set to dry completely.

Page 10: Day 1 - Markers Watercolor Markers - Amazon S3...Copyright 2015 Online Card Classes, LLC. All rights reserved. DAY 1 - PAGE 7 7 2. Create DIY shimmer mist and spritz the panel, following

10

10. Spritz the panel with water to re-activate droplets of the color. Dab the panel with a paper towel to remove color from the droplets and create an artistic effect. Heat set to dry completely.

11. Erase any remaining pencil lines. Remove the panel from the board.

Technique 2 – Masked Halo and Layered Color Background1. Position a clear stamp face up on a watercolor

paper panel, and press down lightly to mount it to the panel (heart shown here). Lightly trace the stamp using a pencil.

2. Secure your watercolor paper panel to a movable, water-resistant board using painter’s tape around the edges.

3. Using a masking fluid pen, trace around the inside edge of your drawn shape. Once the shape is drawn, scribble to create a thick border of masking fluid around the shape. Allow the fluid to dry completely to create a mask.

4. Create a quick, DIY watercolor palette by scribbling a marker on a non-stick craft mat, laminated cardstock, or a large acrylic block (blue ink shown here). Make sure the surface is slick and clean: the ink should bead when water is added.

5. Using a large, wide paintbrush, brush clean water around the outside edge of your shape, covering the panel. The masking will protect the edges of the shape, so it’s okay if you go over the edges slightly.

6. Using a damp paintbrush (size 8 or smaller), pick up and apply ink around the outside edges of the shape (wet-on-wet technique). Brush the ink outward away from the shape to blend.

7. Heat set to dry the watercolors completely.

8. Rub away the masking from your panel. Erase any remaining pencil lines.

11

9. Repeat Step 4 to create a quick palette of another color (purple ink shown here).

10. Using a damp paintbrush (size 8 or smaller), pick up and apply ink to one inside edge of the shape (wet-on-dry technique). Pull the color from the edge into the center of the shape, fading it out as you work toward the other side. Heat set to dry completely.

11. Repeat Step 4 to create a quick palette of another color (pink ink shown here).

12. Using a damp paintbrush, pick up and apply ink to one inside edge of the shape, working over the first color. Pull the color from the edge into the center of the shape, fading it out and blending it with the first color as you work toward the other side. Leave gaps in your coloring; do not fill completely with the second color. Heat set to dry completely.

13. Add an additional layers of color as desired to intensify the shading and watercolor effect. Heat set to dry completely.

Thanks Card1. Create a heart background panel using

Technique 2 as shown in the Day 1 video, following the instructions above.

2. Stamp a greeting word in Onyx Black ink over the shape (“Thanks” shown here). Stamp a complementary greeting below the greeting word (“For always believing in me” shown here).

3. Tie baker’s twine around the panel, positioning the bow below the greetings.

4. Adhere the completed panel to a Black card using foam adhesive.

5. Using a black pen, draw dash lines around the edge of the watercolor panel to create faux stitching.

laminated cardstock, black pen

Tips & Tricks to Note• Watercolors tend to “trap” pencil lines, making them impossible to

erase. If your pencil marks are heavily visible, go over them with a

large eraser before watercoloring. You want the lightest hint of a

penciled shape, just enough to use as a guideline.

• Another trick to avoid warping: secure your watercolor paper panel

to a movable, water-resistant board using painter’s tape.

• For greater control when applying water, opt for a damp paintbrush

rather than using an Aquabrush.

• Masking fluid creates a watertight seal, making it a better option for

watercolors than a traditional paper mask, which can allow color to

seep under the mask. This tight seal is especially important when

masking on textured watercolor paper. Note: You may have better

results on higher-end watercolor paper.

Day 2 - Traditional

Peerless Watercolor and Distress Ink Backgroundsby Laura BassenCard size: 44" x 52"

Technique 1 – Dreamy Background with Peerless Watercolors1. Using a damp paintbrush, lift watercolor

from a Peerless Watercolor sheet (turquoise shown here). Apply it to a piece of acetate or an acrylic block, and soften the color with more water.

2. Apply the color to a watercolor paper panel, using circular motions to create a wash in the center of the panel.

3. Heat set the panel to dry the watercolors completely.

4. Optional: Spatter color over the background by tapping your paintbrush against your finger.

5. Repeat Steps 2-4 as desired to create a layered “dreamy” effect.

Technique 2 – Ombré Background with Peerless Watercolors1. Using a damp paintbrush, lift watercolor

from a Peerless Watercolor sheet (yellow shown here). Apply it to a piece of acetate or an acrylic block, and soften the color with more water.

14

2. Apply the color to a watercolor paper panel, using circular motions to create a wash on the top half of the panel.

3. Using a damp paintbrush, lift a deeper shade of watercolor from a Peerless watercolor sheet (orange shown here). Apply the color to the same acetate sheet, blending it with the first color to create an in-between shade.

4. Apply the color over the bottom edge of the first color wash.

5. Using a damp paintbrush, lift an even brighter shade of watercolor from a Peerless watercolor sheet (geranium pink shown here). Apply directly to the bottom half of the watercolor paper panel, blending up into the lighter colors.

6. Pick up and apply the lighter shades from the acetate sheet, blending them into the edge of the darker shade on the watercolor paper panel. Repeat as needed.

7. Heat set to dry completely.

8. Add additional layers of color, as desired.

Technique 3 – Rainbow Background with Distress Inks1. Create a DIY watercolor palette by pressing

multiple Distress Ink pads directly to a non-stick craft mat (Picked Raspberry, Spiced Marmalade, Squeezed Lemonade, Peacock Feathers, and Salty Ocean shown here).

2. Using a damp paintbrush, apply the first color (Squeezed Lemonade) to a watercolor paper panel, using circular motions to create a wash on the top half of the panel.

3. Create a gradient along the left side of the panel, working from yellow to red from the top. Using a damp paintbrush, blend in the next color along the left side (Spiced Marmalade), and then add the third color below (Picked Raspberry).

Page 15: Day 1 - Markers Watercolor Markers - Amazon S3...Copyright 2015 Online Card Classes, LLC. All rights reserved. DAY 1 - PAGE 7 7 2. Create DIY shimmer mist and spritz the panel, following

15

4. Create a gradient along the right side of the panel, working from yellow to blue from the top. Using a damp paintbrush, blend in the next color along the right side (Peacock Feathers), and then add the third color below (Salty Ocean). Blend the blue into the red to create an in-between purple shade at the bottom of the color wash.

5. Repeat as needed to create a well-saturated blend.

6. Heat set to dry completely.

Technique 4 – Ombré Stripes with Distress Inks1. Create a DIY watercolor palette by pressing

multiple Distress Ink pads directly to a non-stick craft mat (Squeezed Lemonade, Mowed Lawn, Peacock Feathers, and Salty Ocean shown here).

2. Using a flat, damp paintbrush, apply the lightest color to the panel in broad, even strokes.

3. Heat set to dry the stripe completely.

4. Repeat Steps 2 and 3, working with one color at a time in order from lightest to darkest, overlapping each line of color. If a color is too dark to naturally transition into the one before it, blend the two colors together on your palette to create an in-between shade.

With Love Card1. Create a background panel using Technique 2

and Peerless Watercolor sheets.

2. Stamp a bird outline in Onyx Black ink on White cardstock.

3. Ink a bird detail stamp with a light shade of ink (Lemon Chiffon), and then roll the edges of the stamp on a darker inkpad (Sunshine). This is the rock ‘n’ roll technique. Stamp the detail in the corresponding area of the bird outline.

4. Repeat with the remaining bird detail images, using the rock ‘n’ roll technique to create dimensional color on each piece of the image (Sea Glass/Maliblue, High Dive/Scuba, Pale Blush Pink/Teeny Bikini, and Melon/Sunkist combinations shown here).

5. Die cut the bird using the coordinating die. Add a pupil to the bird’s eye using a Black pen.

6. Stamp a branch in two colors using the rock ‘n’ roll technique on White cardstock (Khaki/Dark Chocolate shown here). Die cut the branch using the coordinating die.

7. Stamp multiple leaves in two colors using the rock ‘n’ roll technique on White cardstock (Jellybean/Lucky shown here). Die cut the leaves using the coordinating dies.

8. Adhere all die cuts to the watercolor panel using foam adhesive.

9. Stamp a greeting in Onyx Black ink on the watercolor panel (“With Love” shown here).

10. Adhere the completed panel to a White card using foam adhesive.

Tips & Tricks to Note• Create a DIY palette with scraps of Peerless

Watercolor papers. Check out our downloadable

template!

• When working with watercolors, experimentation

is the key! Don’t be afraid to use your watercolor

paper as you play around, working to learn what you

like. It’s okay if you have to get more.

• If the difference between two colors is too great for

them to blend naturally for an ombré effect, create

an in-between shade on a craft mat by blending the

two colors together with a bit of water.

Tube Watercolorsby Dawn WoleslagleCard size: 4" x 52"

To Show Our Gratitude Card1. Create multiple masks for each of the

images in your design (leaves and wild rose images shown here). Stamp each image on masking paper several times, and cut out each mask by hand to avoid a gutter/edge outside the image.

2. Stamp each rose image in Warm Wool ink on a panel of hot pressed watercolor paper. Apply a coordinating mask to each image.

3. Stamp each leaf image in Warm Wool ink on the watercolor paper panel, overlapping the rose masks.

4. Remove the masks from the roses.

5. Squeeze a dollop of each watercolor into a divided-well paint palette (Rose Red, Aureolin, Ultramarine Blue, and Prussian Blue shown here). Place a paper towel under your palette so you can quickly dab water from your paintbrush, if it’s over saturated.

6. Pick up Rose Red watercolor using a wet brush, and apply it to the center well of your palette. Add more water as needed to create your desired dilution for the first layer. The first layer will be the lightest layer of color.

7. Quickly paint each rose with Rose Red, using a free hand over the petals—there’s no need to paint each petal individually. Add a little paint outside the lines of each rose, blending it into the background as shown in the Day 2 video.

8. Create blue-green watercolor by mixing Aureolin, Ultramarine Blue, and Prussian Blue watercolors with a little bit of water in a clean well of your palette. Pick up the paint and apply it to the center well of your palette. Add more water as needed to create your desired dilution for the first layer. The first layer will be the lightest layer of color.

18

9. Quickly paint each leaf using your blue-green custom mix. Add shading using Prussian Blue watercolor, as desired. Add a little paint outside the lines of each leaf, blending it into the background as shown in the Day 2 video.

10. Add additional Rose Red paint to the diluted Rose Red watercolor in the center well of your palette, creating a more pigmented watercolor. Apply a dab of Ultramarine to increase the purple tones of the Rose Red watercolor.

11. Apply a second layer of paint and shading to each rose as shown in the Day 2 video.

12. Add Ultramarine paint to the Rose Red watercolor to deepen the color and purple tones, creating a third shade.

13. Apply the third layer of shading to each rose as shown in the Day 2 video.

14. Add pigment to the blue-green mix, as desired to create a deeper shade.

15. Apply another layer of blue-green watercolor to each leaf to create shading.

16. Apply Prussian Blue watercolor to the background in patches, blending outward and washing over the blue-green and Rose Red areas to create new colors and areas of variation.

17. Allow the watercolor scene to dry completely.

18. Squeeze a dollop of opaque watercolor into your palette (Cadmium Yellow Pale shown here). Do not dilute with water.

19. Pick up the full strength Cadmium paint and apply to some of the stamen in the center of each rose to make them stand out. Leave others white for relief and contrast.

20. Trace the lines of the rose petals using a Frayed Burlap Distress marker in order to add weight to the roses and draw the eye to them. Outline a few of the stamen tops and a few of the stamen bottoms—there’s no need to outline all of them perfectly; the suggestion of the lines is enough to make them stand out without making the centers heavy and busy.

21. Squeeze a dollop of white opaque watercolor into your palette (Chinese White shown here). Do not dilute with water.

22. Pick up the full strength Chinese White paint and apply to some of the stamen in the center of each rose to add brightness and highlights to the areas you left white.

23. Quickly apply Chinese White paint to some of the leafs to create texture and highlights (dry brushing).

24. Stamp a greeting in VersaMark ink on a vellum panel (“To show our Gratitude” shown here). Heat emboss using Bright White embossing powder.

25. Adhere the greeting panel to the completed watercolor panel.

26. Trim the completed panel to 3w" x 54". Adhere the completed panel to a 4" x 52" top-folding White card.

27. Embellish the card with sequins as desired.

Tips & Tricks to Note• Tube watercolors are cost effective—you could refill

a pan several times over from a single tube. Plus,

because you’re only purchasing the colors you want

and need, you’re only buying what you need at the

time you run out of it.

• Start with primary colors. From the three primary

shades, you can create any color you need.

• Test your watercolor/water ratio out on a piece of

scratch watercolor paper, to ensure that your blend

is the correct dilution of pigment for your project

before you start painting.

• Hot pressed watercolor paper is very smooth, which

makes it ideal for large stamped backgrounds and

intricate designs. You won’t lose any details in the

paper’s texture. Bonus: it dries faster!

• If you make a mistake and paint outside the lines

of your stamped area, just repeat the mistake

somewhere else in the design to make it look

intentional!

• To create lighter shades of transparent/translucent

watercolors, just add water. Do not mix your

transparent watercolors with opaque white color—

this creates an unpleasant chalky effect when the

paint dries.

No-Line Watercoloringby Kristina WernerCard size: 52" x 44"

Technique – No-Line Watercolor1. Ink a stamp using Pumice Stone, Iced Spruce,

or Antique Linen Distress ink.

2. Stamp the image first on scratch paper, then on the smooth side of a watercolor paper panel without re-inking.

3. Prepare your watercolors for painting: Distress Inks, pan watercolors, or tube watercolors (all three methods shown in the Day 2 video).

◆ If using Distress Inks, create a DIY palette by

pressing your Distress Inkpads directly against

a slick surface, such as a non-stick craft mat or

laminated cardstock.

◆ If using tube watercolors, squeeze a dollop of

each color into a divided-pan palette. Pull the

colors into the center of the pan and add water

to create your dilutions.

◆ If using pan watercolors, activate each color as

necessary with water.

4. Using a damp paintbrush, pick up your first color and apply to the appropriate area of the image, along the outline where shading would naturally occur. Pick up more water with your paintbrush, and pull the color toward the other edge of the image, fading the color. Repeat along the other edge, blending the color in the center where it meets the other color application.

5. Allow the area to dry completely. Add additional layers of watercolor as needed for shading.

6. Repeat Steps 4 and 5 for each area of the image, using the appropriate color for that area.

I Miss You Card1. Stamp three critter images in Antique Linen

Distress ink, and color using the no-line watercoloring methods shown in the Day 2 video (see instructions above).

2. Add eyes to each critter using a fine-tip black marker or pen. If the area of the image where the eyes belong is black or dark gray, use a White Gel Pen.

3. Stamp a greeting in Onyx Black ink on the watercolor panel.

4. Using a damp detail paintbrush, free-hand paint hearts on the watercolor panel using a quick DIY palette of Worn Lipstick Distress Ink.

5. Using a damp paintbrush (size 8 or smaller), add shading below each critter using a quick DIY palette of Pumice Stone and Black Soot Distress Ink.

6. Stamp a chevron border in Onyx Black ink on a side-folding, landscape-oriented Taffy card.

7. Trim the watercolor panel, and adhere to the card using foam adhesive.

8. Round the top right corner of the card using a 2" Corner Chomper.

Tips & Tricks to Note• This is a little bit more of an advanced technique,

but one that you’ll love once you get the hang of

it. Start out with simple outline images, like the

adorable critter stamps from Mama Elephant. Person

stamps, like those from the Greeting Farm, are

fantastic options for when you’re more experienced.

• No-line watercolor techniques work best with

hot-pressed watercolor paper, the same paper

Dawn introduced in her video. With the smoother

paper, the stamped lines are crisper and easier to

work with.

• Stamp off on a piece of scratch paper before stamping on your

watercolor paper in order to produce the lightest image lines

possible. Keep your scratch paper as a reference in case your lines

become too blurred by water for you to tell what the original image

looked like.

• The trick to no-line watercolors is to use the heaviest/strongest

pigment to define the edges of each area of the image. Fade the

color as you move toward the center of the area.

Distress Inks, Tube Watercolors, & Stampingby Jennifer RzasaCard size: 52" x 44"

Technique 1 – Distress Ink Watercolor Image1. Select a solid image stamp (giraffe shown

here). Ink the stamp using Distress Ink (Mustard Seed shown here). Do not worry about the level of coverage on the stamp.

2. Stamp the image on a watercolor paper panel.

3. Working quickly before the ink fully dries, brush over the stamped image with a damp paintbrush to spread and blend the ink. Note: Use a lot of water for this technique to increase the watercolor effect.

4. Allow the ink to dry completely or heat set.

Technique 2 – Faux Hand-drawn Distress Ink Watercolor Image1. Create a watercolor image, following the

steps outlined in Technique 1 (elephant and Peacock Feathers ink shown here).

2. Spatter water droplets over the image. This will re-activate the Distress Ink.

3. Dab a paper towel over the image to pick up the water and ink, revealing an artistic effect. Note: The longer the water sits on the ink, the greater the effect.

4. Allow the ink to dry completely or heat set.

5. Optional: trace around the edges of the image and add details using a fine-tip black pen to create a faux hand-drawn effect.

Page 23: Day 1 - Markers Watercolor Markers - Amazon S3...Copyright 2015 Online Card Classes, LLC. All rights reserved. DAY 1 - PAGE 7 7 2. Create DIY shimmer mist and spritz the panel, following

Technique 3 – Loose Distress Ink Watercolor Image1. Select a solid image stamp (lion shown here).

Ink the stamp using Distress Ink (Fired Brick shown here). Do not worry about the level of coverage on the stamp.

2. Spritz the inked stamp with water using a Mini Mister or other fine-nozzle spray bottle.

3. Stamp the image on a watercolor paper panel to create a loose impression of the shape.

4. Heat set to dry the ink completely.

5. Optional: If the image you selected has a coordinating detail stamp, stamp the details on the solid image using the same ink for a tone-on-tone look.

Technique 4 – No Line Solid Images1. Select a cityscape or other detailed large

scene stamp. Stamp the image in Antique Linen Distress Ink on the smooth side of a watercolor paper panel.

2. Secure your watercolor paper panel to a movable, water-resistant board using painter’s tape around the edges.

3. Squeeze small dollops of watercolor from a tube paint set into a divided-pan watercolor palette. Add water to activate each color.

4. Using a slightly damp paintbrush, pick up color from your palette and trace the top edge of the first area of the scene on the left side (mustard yellow shown here). Pull the color from the top edge downward, fading the color as you pull it down.

5. While your first color is still wet, pick up the next color you wish to use (green shown here), and blend it into the edge of the first color (wet-on-wet technique). Repeat tracing of the top edge as outlined in Step 4.

6. Working from left to right, repeat Steps 4 and 5 using a different color for each area until the scene is completely painted.

7. Go over the top of each color area with another layer of same color and more water. Pick up your secured panel to allow the color to run down and create a drip effect as desired.

8. Allow the paint to dry completely, and remove the painter’s tape.

Technique 51. Stamp an image on a watercolor paper panel

(flower shown here):

◆ Option 1: Stamp the image in Onyx Black Versafine ink.

◆ Option 2: Stamp the image in VersaMark ink. Heat emboss

using White embossing powder.

5. Allow the watercolors to dry completely.

6. Apply an additional layer of paint to create shading.

Thank You Card1. Create a watercolor scene following the steps

outlined in Technique 4 (above).

2. Stamp a greeting banner in Ruby Red ink on White cardstock (“Thank you” shown here). Trim out.

3. Adhere a strip of Basic Black cardstock to the watercolor panel. Adhere the greeting banner to the strip.

4. Adhere the completed panel to a top-folding, landscape-oriented Basic Black card.

Tips & Tricks to Note• These techniques will work with other water-based

dye inks; however, results will vary due to the unique

properties of Distress Inks.

• If you have a lot of solid floral stamps, these

techniques are a perfect complement to your stash!

• For no-line watercolor techniques, we love using

Antique Linen Distress Ink because it blends so

nicely with other colors to fade completely away.

Other light colors in your stash may work for you—

give them a try!

• If you’re worried about getting watercolor in the

clean area above your inked image, trace just

outside the top edge of your stamped image using

masking fluid before you begin to paint.

Day 3 - Pencils and Crayons

Watercolor and Inktense Pencilsby Jennifer RzasaCard size: 44" x 52"

Technique 1 – Standard Shading Application1. Scribble on a cardstock or letterpress paper

panel using the side of a watercolor or Inktense pencil (green shown here). Apply lighter pressure at first as you move side to side, increasing the pressure as you work downward to create shading.

2. Brush over the color block using an Aquabrush to blend.

Technique 2 – Direct-to-Water Application1. Dip a watercolor or Inktense pencil into clean

water.

2. Draw a design on a cardstock or letterpress paper panel. This creates a smoother, more intense shade.

Technique 3 – Dry-to-Wet Application1. Using a damp paintbrush or Aquabrush, apply

clean water to a watercolor paper panel.

2. Draw a design on the damp panel using a watercolor or Inktense pencil.

Technique 4 – Color Pick-Up Application1. Using a damp paintbrush or Aquabrush, touch

the tip of the brush to a watercolor or Inktense pencil to lift color from the pencil.

2. Apply the color to a cardstock or letterpress paper panel using the brush.

Page 27: Day 1 - Markers Watercolor Markers - Amazon S3...Copyright 2015 Online Card Classes, LLC. All rights reserved. DAY 1 - PAGE 7 7 2. Create DIY shimmer mist and spritz the panel, following

27

Technique 5 – Color Spattering1. Flick a damp paintbrush across the tip of a

watercolor or Inktense pencil to spatter color across your project.

Technique 6 – Multicolor Blending1. Scribble a shape on a cardstock panel using a

watercolor or Inktense pencil (circle drawn in orange shown here).

2. Quickly scribbling, fill the shape in using a complementary lighter shade (yellow shown here).

3. Lightly apply water using a damp paintbrush or an Aquabrush.

4. Heat set to dry the pencil completely.

5. Add more of the first color along the bottom edge by scribbling or using a color pick-up application (Technique 4). Smooth out the new layer of color using a damp paintbrush or Aquabrush.

6. Inktense: The first layer will not reactivate, so the two layers of color will remain distinct.

7. Traditional watercolor pencil: The first layer will reactivate, so apply water and additional layers carefully.

8. Spatter the first color over the shape following the steps in Technique 5.

9. Repeat the basic steps of this technique to add additional shapes needed for your design (stem and leaves shown here to create an orange).

Technique 7 – Water Spritz Blending1. Draw and shade an image using watercolor or

Inktense pencils.

2. Spritz the image with water using a Mini Mister or other fine-nozzle spray bottle. The color will intensify and begin to blend as soon as the water hits it.

3. Allow the image to dry completely.

Technique 8 – DIY Watercolor Pencil Palette1. Scribble heavily on a piece of scratch cardstock using a

watercolor pencil. Inktense pencils will not work for this technique because you cannot reactivate the color.

2. Apply water to activate, and pick up the watercolor using an Aquabrush or damp paintbrush.

Hello Birthday Girl Card1. Using watercolor pencils and starting with your lightest

shade of pink, sketch the outline of a flamingo on a cold-press watercolor paper panel, as shown in the Day 3 video. Draw the image so that it “hangs off” the left side of the panel.

2. Sketch a beak on the flamingo using a black pencil.

3. Apply water using an Aquabrush to the body of the flamingo to smooth out the color and start to fill in the shape.

4. Create a DIY palette using several brighter shades of pencil (Technique 8). Add shading to the flamingo’s body, as shown in the Day 3 video. Blend into the body using an Aquabrush.

5. Carefully add water and smooth out the beak using an Aquabrush.

28

6. Using a damp paintbrush (not the Aquabrush), pick up color from your DIY palette. Tap the paintbrush on your finger to spatter color over the flamingo.

7. Heat set to dry the watercolors completely.

8. Stamp a greeting word in Tuxedo Black ink on the watercolor paper panel (“Hello” shown here).

9. Stamp a complementary greeting in Tuxedo Black ink below the greeting word (“Birthday girl” shown here).

10. Wrap baker’s twine around the panel several times, and tie a bow.

11. Adhere the completed panel to a White card.

Tips & Tricks to Note• Before you add water, most watercolor pencil

options are erasable with a standard eraser,

especially the lighter colors. Be sure to test erasing

for your brand on scratch paper first—you may not

be able to fully get rid of the pencil marks.

• Just like with watercolor paint, simply adding clean

water once the color is dry allows you to rework

watercolor pencils. Inktense pencils on the other

hand create permanent ink once dry.

• Because most of the shading work is done using

dry pencils, you will typically need less water than

you would if you were working with traditional

watercolors This means that you may be able to

get away with using regular cardstock instead of

watercolor paper.

• If you’re stamping on cold-press watercolor

paper, a stamp press can help you get down

into the texture and will offer crisper results

than a traditional acrylic block.

Water Soluble Oil Pastels and Inktense Pencilsby Kristina WernerCard size: 52" x 44"

Technique 1 – Stamping with Oil Pastels1. Select a stamp with lots of solid surface area.

2. Color directly on the stamp using oil pastels, applying them in stripes of color, following a natural color gradient (yellow to purple shown here).

3. Using a medium paintbrush, dab water over one color stripe at a time, picking up clean water between colors.

4. Lay a hot-press watercolor paper panel over the stamp, and press evenly to stamp the image.

5. Use a damp paintbrush or Aquabrush to blend any areas of the image that didn’t stamp cleanly. The water will not move the pastels too much.

6. Clean your stamp.

Technique 2 – DIY Oil Pastel Palette1. Using an oil pastel, color directly on a slick surface,

such as a non-stick craft mat, laminated cardstock, or an acrylic block.

2. Apply water to the pastel using a damp paintbrush or Aquabrush to create a watercolor.

Technique 3 – Freehand Oil Pastel Background1. Secure a watercolor paper panel to a movable,

water-resistant board using painter’s tape around the edges.

2. Scribble side-to-side across the top of the panel using the first color oil pastel in a planned color gradient (yellow to purple shown here).

3. Repeat coloring with each shade to fill the panel with color stripes.

Page 30: Day 1 - Markers Watercolor Markers - Amazon S3...Copyright 2015 Online Card Classes, LLC. All rights reserved. DAY 1 - PAGE 7 7 2. Create DIY shimmer mist and spritz the panel, following

4. Using a damp medium paintbrush, paint side-to-side across one stripe at a time to cover the panel with water and blend the pastels.

5. Color directly on the damp panel with oil pastels to intensify the color as needed. Blend with the damp paintbrush.

6. Heat set to dry the pastels completely.

Merry & Bright Card1. Cut a 42" x 5w" panel from watercolor paper.

2. Stamp an image in Onyx Black Versafine ink on the watercolor paper panel (snowman trio shown here). Allow the ink to dry completely or heat set.

3. Secure a watercolor paper panel to a movable, water-resistant board using painter’s tape around the edges.

4. Select a variety of Inktense pencils for this project.

5. Working with your first neutral color (light gray shown here), create a DIY watercolor pencil palette by scribbling on a slick surface and activating the color using a Wink of Stella Glitter Brush, instead of a damp paintbrush or Aquabrush.

6. Pick up the color using the Wink of Stella brush, and paint the color in the appropriate area of the stamped image (snowman bodies shown here).

7. Repeat Steps 5 and 6 as needed for any other colors that need a very light application (pink shown here for snowman cheeks).

8. Working with one color at a time, trace outline edges and color in small areas of the image where shading would naturally occur. Color only those areas that need to be the darkest in the image. Pull each color from the edge of the image toward the opposite side using a Wink of Stella brush.

9. Stamp a greeting in Onyx Black ink below the image (“Merry & Bright” shown here).

31

10. Add or extend lines below the image to give the image a “ground”.

11. Create a DIY palette using an oil pastel (light blue shown here). Paint around the image to the “ground” line to create a sky background.

12. Heat set to dry the watercolors completely.

13. Remove the watercolor panel from the board, and trim to 44" x 52".

14. Adhere the completed panel to a top-folding, landscape-oriented White card.

Tips & Tricks to Note• Different brands of oil pastels have varying levels

of creaminess—they higher end brands are typically

creamier. By all means, experiment with what you

have or what’s within your budget.

• Muddiness occurs when you mix two colors

that are complementary (across from each other)

on the color wheel—this means that they make

brown or gray when they’re mixed together.

Avoid this by selecting colors that are side-

by-side on the color wheel.

• When trimming watercolor paper to card size,

keep any extra pieces to use for color and

medium testing.

• When working with any of the mediums we’re

covering today, it’s good practice to select your

colors before you begin working. That way, you

can quickly switch between colors and work

more efficiently.

Gelatos and Watercolor Crayonsby Shari CarrollCard size: 44" x 52"

Technique 1 – Blended Gelatos1. Scribble directly on the smooth side of a

watercolor paper panel using multiple colors of gelatos.

2. Blend using your finger, working in an up and down motion. Optional: spritz with water before blending.

3. Add additional color as desired, and blend.

4. Spritz the blended gelato panel with water. Blend using your finger to move the colors and the water. Dab excess water away using a baby wipe to add texture.

5. Allow the panel to dry completely.

6. Position a stencil over the panel, and lightly wipe through the stencil using a baby wipe. The wipe will lift away the color from the background through the open areas in the stencil.

Technique 2 – Watercolor Crayon Resist Patterns1. Stamp a background design in VersaMark

ink on the smooth side of a watercolor paper panel (stripes shown here). Heat emboss using metallic embossing powder (silver shown here).

2. Color one end of the first open area (non-embossed stripe) using a watercolor crayon. Repeat for each stripe, alternating which end of the stripe is colored, and switching colors as desired.

33

3. Using a damp paintbrush, apply water to the colored end of the first stripe and pull the color to the opposite side, fading the color to create an ombré effect. Repeat for each stripe.

4. Allow the watercolors to dry completely.

Enjoy Card1. Create a blended gelatos background panel

following the steps in Technique 1, as shown in the Day 3 video.

2. Die cut a shape from the center of the panel (stitched leaf shown here). Set the positive (shape) die cut aside; you’ll be using the negative (window) panel for this project.

3. Adhere a piece of acetate to the back of the window panel.

4. Frame the back of the window panel using foam adhesive, creating a thicker block of adhesive at the top and bottom edges. Leave the area behind the window uncovered by adhesive so the window can be seen. Do not remove the backing at this time.

5. Die cut a small greeting word from Desert Storm cardstock (“Enjoy” shown here). Repeat to create five die cuts. Stack and adhere the die cut words to create a thick die cut.

6. Cut a panel of White cardstock slightly smaller than the window panel. Adhere the thick die cut to the White panel, positioning the die cut on the panel so it can be seen through the window when the two panels are placed front to back.

7. Prep the framed window panel to become a shaker by rubbing a powder bag along the inside edges of the foam adhesive frame. Add sequins to the open area of the window panel, inside the frame. Push the sequins to the edges to help with positioning the panel.

8. Peel all backing pieces from the foam adhesive frame. Position the greeting panel on the adhesive, pressing it into place.

11. Adhere the completed shaker panel to a top-folding White card.

12. Finish the card by tying a multi-loop bow using hemp twine, and adhering it to the top of the knot using Glossy Accents. Allow the adhesive to dry completely.

Tips & Tricks to Note• When blending gelatos, concentrate the colors that

will blend well next to each other on your cardstock.

For example, lay down orange and red together,

blue and green together, etc.

• Gelatos are so creamy (like lip balm!) that you will

have no problem blending them with your finger.

Add water and blend with your finger for a no-

brush-required watercolor effect!

• Gelatos remain reactive when dry, so you can easily

add texture using a stencil and baby wipe after

you’ve created your initial background panel.

• Watercolor crayons allow you great control over the

intensity of your color. You can either scribble the

color with a lighter or heavier hand to control the

saturation or adjust the saturation after the fact using

water. Depending on the situation, you may easily

use a combination of both!

Wrap Up Day - A Few More Ideas!

Batik Backgroundby Jennifer RzasaCard size: 44" x 52"

Watercolor Batik Technique1. Melt a small portion of paraffin wax in a wax

warmer or other electric heat element which will keep the wax warm while you work.

2. Tape Hosho paper to heat resistant surface. Here, Jennifer used a large ceramic tile.

3. Stamp flower image in VersaFine Onyc Black ink on Hosho paper.

4. Determine areas you would like to be the lightest and carefully apply melted wax.

5. Determine the next lightest areas and paint them a pale pink. Allow to dry.

6. Cover areas from Step 5 with wax.

7. Repeat Steps 5 and 6 until image and background is painted and covered in wax.

8. Optional: For a “droplet look”, sprinkle on bits of wax before painting.

9. Optional: Cover entire image in wax and allow to dry completely. Once cooled and cry, bend the paper until the wax cracks. Apply paint over the cracks and allow to dry.

10. Use a clothing iron to remove the layers of wax by placing a piece of white paper over the painting and then applying heat. The wax transfers to the white paper.

Happy Birthday Card1. Adhere watercolor painting to folded

white notecard.

2. Stamp “Happy Birthday” in black ink on white cardstock.

3. Color in “Happy” with red marker.

4. Trim greeting area and adhere to card using foam adhesive.

Tips and Tricks• Batik is traditionally done on rice paper, however

rice paper can be expensive. Instead, Jennifer uses

Hosho paper for a similar effect. You can also try a

coffee filter.

• When applying the melted wax, work quickly! It will

cool very fast.

• Do not use a heat tool to speed the drying process

as it will melt the applied wax.

Reactivating Watercolorby Jennifer McGuireCard sizes: 52" x 44"

Instructions1. Tape a piece of watercolor paper to a hard,

smooth surface to keep it flat.

2. Apply four stripes of Peerless watercolor to cover a large are of the watercolor paper, overlapping slightly to help with blending. When applying the watercolor, only use a small amount of water so that the color stays very intense.

3. Let watercolor dry completely.

4. Trace the inside of a rectangle postage die onto the watercolor area. This will be a guide for centering stamped images.

5. Apply anti-static powder tool to the watercolored area.

6. Stamp a sentiment with VersaMark Ink and white heat emboss.

7. Above the sentiment, stamp a large flower with VersaMark Ink and white heat emboss.

8. Stamp a small flower with VersaMark Ink on both sides of the large flower, allowing the stamping to overlap. Add white embossing powder. Use a dry, fine-tip brush to brush away any powder that overlaps with the large flower image. (This is a quick way to get the effect of masking). Heat to emboss.

9. Repeat Step 8 with leaves.

10. Use a fine brush to paint water inside the flowers and the leaves. Before the water starts to dry, dab it away with a dry paper towel. This will remove some of the color. Repeat 2 to 3 times.

11. Let dry.

Page 39: Day 1 - Markers Watercolor Markers - Amazon S3...Copyright 2015 Online Card Classes, LLC. All rights reserved. DAY 1 - PAGE 7 7 2. Create DIY shimmer mist and spritz the panel, following

39

12. If desired, add a light bit of watercolor back into the flowers and leaves.

13. Trim along the pencil line guides.

14. Die cut the postage die from white cardstock and add the watercolor piece to the center.

15. Cut a notecard to 44" x 52".

16. Add the postage piece to the front of the notecard with a piece of craft foam between for added dimension.

17. Apply clear Wink of Stella to the flowers and leaves for a bit of shine.

Tips and Tricks• This technique works well with many watercolors,

but not all. To test out your watercolor medium

of choice, simply apply a dark layer of watercolor

on watercolor paper and let it dry. Put a drop of

water on it and dab it with a dry cloth. If the water

removed some of the color (leaving a lighter spot),

then this technique works with that particular

watercolor medium.

• Peerless watercolor and Distress Inks are great

choices for this technique.

• Each time you add a layer of water to the dried

watercolor background and dab the water away, it

removes a bit of color. The more times you repeat

this, the lighter it gets!

Tips & Tricks• Different colors react in different ways. Experiment to see which

colors you enjoy most.

• Mist the back of your watercolor paper with water to

prevent warping.

• Avoid misting the watercolor powders too much after they are

already wet and mixing with each other. Too much water might

muddy the colors.

• Work on top of a Ranger Craft Sheet. Stray powders can be sprayed

with water and cleaned up without and hassle.
