DA Welcomes New Principal Effective July 1, 2017, Ms. Rachel Gross will be the
Principal of Davison Avenue Intermediate School.
Her predecessor, Mr. Edward Tallon, will move to
the position of Principal of Maurice W. Downing
Primary School. The Davison Times interviewed
Ms. Gross about her background and what brought
her to this honorable position.
Where did you grow up? I was born in Seattle, Washington. I moved to
Long Beach, New York when I was 2 years old.
Where did you go to college? I went to Queens College for my
bachelor’s degree, Hofstra University for my Masters, and Stony Brook
University for my Post Graduate Degree.
What degrees have you earned? Bachelors of Arts with a Major in
Psychology and a minor in Art Studio, Masters of Arts in Creative Arts
Therapy, Masters of Science in Inclusive Elementary Special Education, Post
Graduate Degree in Educational Leadership.
What made you want to be a Principal? I became a teacher so that I could help shape the minds of the future and encourage kids to find success in order to follow their dreams. The Principal gets the unique opportunity to work not just with one class, but with the entire faculty and staff to support all 370 amazing students at Davison Avenue-to me that is very exciting. What do you want to accomplish as a Principal? My goal as Principal is to make sure that every child gets what they need, that learning, explora-tion and growth occur daily and that every student, teacher and faculty member feels proud to be part of the Davison family.
Can you tell us some other things about you?
I love party planning and cooking. I enjoy traveling the world (I’ve been to some exotic places like the Islands of Greece and China). I particularly enjoy spoiling my 7 beautiful nieces and nephews, ranging in ages 2 months to 11 years. I have an older brother and a younger sister, which makes me the middle child. I can speak, read, and write in Hebrew and I prefer french
toast over pancakes.
THANK YOU
FOR SUPPORTING
THE BUDGET!

Ferrets by Brianna
Ferrets are the cutest creatures. They
are the third most popular pet. Ferrets
have lived with humans for more than
2,000 years!
The average male ferret weighs 3-4
pounds, while the average female ferret
weighs 1-2 pounds. Their lifespan is
6-10 years!
Their life is very short! Wild ferrets like
to live in forests and grasslands. Their
predators are owls, foxes, and badgers.
Their favorite food is mice. They also
eat gophers. Those are some facts
about ferrets.
Did you know? Elephants are the largest land-living
mammals in the world.
Two most popular elephant species-African
and Asian.
Elephants have been reported mimicking
sounds of traffic and trucks.
Little critters don’t scare elephants.
An elephant's brain weighs just over 11
pounds.
Pedals the Bear by Savannah
Pedals the Bear was unique. Why? Because he walked upright on his hind legs due to injuries on his front paws. He was first spotted in Oakridge, New Jersey in 2014 . He became a inter-net sensation, because people had never seen anything like it! Some thought it might have been a hoax. “An annual hunt was introduced in 2010 to help manage the bear population.” On October 17, 2016, a hunter shot a black bear that was believed to be Pedals. They could not determine the identity of Pedals, because he was never tagged nor had a
DNA sample taken.

Basketball by Lorenzo
My favorite sport is basketball. Basketball is a great sport to play. Basketball can also teach you teamwork and leadership. Basketball is a fast-paced game that requires speed and agility. In a basketball game you
would see both teams passing the ball to their teammates. Basketball was created by James Naismith. Lebron James, Kobe Bryant, Stephen Curry, Michael Jordan and many others are all time greats who played basketball. Lebron James actually just last year was in the NBA Finals and they were losing 3-1 in a 7 game series but they came back and the Cleveland
Cavaliers beat the Golden State Warriors 4-3. Stephen Curry changed the way basketball was played in the NBA. In the 70’s and 80’s the Point Guards passed the ball to Power Forwards and Centers more because they used the big guys more often at that time. But Stephen Curry shot more than he did pass. He likes to shoot 3 point-shots which are about 15-20 feet away from the basket. Now many more people play like that. Kobe Bryant was one
of the most historic players ever. He won 5 NBA Championships.

My Blessed Tree
by Tristan
My blessed sacred tree with heavenly souls looking at me.
May I pray day and night with all my might till the end of my day I must say.
The souls of my family tree looking for happy memories inside my brain….
And me thinking of them with my heart and brain.
“May the cross and God protect me till the end of my day.”
I say……… and my family, too.
Memories won’t fade, but my families do. Including memories of further families, too.
In loving memory of Virginia R.
Grand Dad by Tristan
Song by Nirvana
A song is a medley that won’t stop repeating in your head.
It is a rhythm that can never end.
Songs have words to express what is safely kept inside you.
Don’t be afraid to let it out, because people would want to know
what it is all about. They want to know how you feel, they
want to know if it is appealing to the ear.
This poem isn’t about you, he or she. It is for the people who feel to express
themselves in a song, just like me.
Love my grandad like memories in the sky.
Great and loving just like mother.
Tells young stories about my mom’s child-hood.
I wouldn’t forget those memories. I just hope…….
he stays safe from any harm, but when his time has come for him to pass over….
He’ll be happy with grandma and so will I remembering memories until
dawn.

Would you recommend this book? Why or why not? I would recommend this book because it is a mystery book and I like mysteries. Also, it is very interesting!
