Builds a strong foundation to ensure the best patient care. Here’s the text that connects what students are learning to the real world in which they will practice… introducing them to the pathophysiologic processes of the conditions they’ll encounter in clinical settings.

The book is organized by body systems. Each chapter helps students understand the relationships between the underlying pathophysiology and patient assessment data, laboratory findings, and diagnostic testing results. Real-world perspectives bridge the gap between the science of disease and clinical patient care.

Clinical Concept boxes explain how key concepts apply to clinical practice.

    PERSONALIZED TEACHING PLAN

    TOPIC: Fluid and Fluid Imbalances

    Knowledge Relay: Fluid Imbalances

    DIRECTIONS

    • Divide students into groups of three or work on the project as a class.• This exercise requires students to answer part of the question before passing “the baton” to

the next student to answer the subsequent part. • You can call on students to answer each piece, have the student answering that portion of

the question choose the next student, or rely on students to volunteer to answer.• Students are to describe causes and symptoms of fluid imbalances (fluid excess, fluid

deficit, edema). The first student names the cause, the second student describes how the stated cause affects the body’s tissue, and finally, the third student provides the signs and symptoms that may appear. See example in the following table.

    • A student handout is provided and answers are shown below.

State a PotentialCause of a Fluid Imbalance

    (Student 1)

Describe How the Stated Cause Affects the Body

    (Student 2)

List the Signs and SymptomsThat May Appear

(Student 3)Lack of sufficient antidiuretic hormone (ADH) production

Causes excessive fluid loss in the urine and dehydration

    Thirst, dry mucous membranes

Protein malnutrition Decreased oncotic pressure Edema, kwashiorkor

Lack of response to ADH Excessive fluid loss in urine Decreased skin turgor, thirst, increased plasma osmolarity

Increased hydrostatic pressure (example: congestive heart failure)

    Edema systemic and/or pulmonary

Crackles in lungs, swelling in feet and ankles, jugular vein distention

Increased hydrostatic pressure in lower extremities

Dependent edema Swelling in ankles and feet

Sodium retention Illness or excess consumption of sodium, fluid pulled from intracranial fluid

    Severe thirst

Effusion Fluid sequestration in cavities Depends on location of fluid and cavities; example: pleural effusion interferes with lung expansion

Osmotic diuresis Excess ions pull fluid into the urine

    Thirst, polyuria

Personalized Teaching Plans for each topic provide everything you need for to save time and ensure student success, including in-class activities, discussion, small group work, and case studies

NEW! Online applications for each activity include tips for distance learning.

“Students who completed topics before class scored 16-24 points higher on assessments and every single student who completed all topics by the relevant test dates passed that test as well as the course as a whole!”
