Dear Mr Bourdeau, I recently learned about the EEE PPP programmes to promote research on renovated buildings across Europe. I am the organiser of a new exhibition and conference called Retro Expo taking place at the National Exhibition Centre, Birmingham, UK from 30 th October – 1 st November 2012. Retro Expo focuses on the energy efficient refurbishment of existing buildings – domestic, commercial and public. As you will be aware, the UK Government is rolling-out a major retrofit initiative this October called The Green Deal which promises to accelerate the refurbishment of the UK’s building stock, which amounts to more than 26 million homes and 1.8 million commercial properties. The government department responsible, the Department for Energy and Climate Change is one of our key supporters and many of the private sector finance providers and large scale manufacturers are also involved. The BRE, The Modern Built Environment Knowledge Transfer Network and the Technology Strategy Board are also well represented. We are keen to bring both best practice and key research to the fore of the event, and it is important that we broaden our horizons from the UK. I was therefore hoping that the EEB PPP/ESBA might help to deliver this by exhibiting and presenting the results and interim results of retrofit related programmes at Retro Expo. I feel this will significantly help you achieve your knowledge dissemination objectives. We have a conference co-located with Retro Expo called The Green Deal Summit, and have an important session on Wednesday 31 st October entitled ‘Key Retrofit Lessons Learned to Date’. I have attached the draft programme. Would you be able to send somebody along to present from the EEE PPP perspective? We would also like to see as many of the EEE PPP key technology innovations and incubation projects showcased in our exhibition. Do you think there would be interest in this from European manufacturers, perhaps exhibiting in an EEE PPP Pavilion? Given the UK’s readiness to retrofit, I would have thought it would be an attractive market for them to target? I am grateful for your time and look forward to hearing from you. About Retro ExpoRetro Expo is a new exhibition and conference that focuses on delivering the energy efficientrefurbishment of domestic and commercial buildings. It is co-located with InstallerLive -www.installerlive.com

With the launch of the Green Deal in October 2012, the refurbishment sector is about to take agiant leap forward. Rising energy prices, combined with a national commitment to the CarbonReduction Target, are driving urgent action on tackling energy use in the existing UK buildingstock, which accounts for 43% of all of the UKs carbon emissions. Add to this an economicneed to make more of what we have rather than replace, and the landscape is attractive forthose who supply or operate in the refurbishment sector.

Attracting a B2B audience of financiers, policymakers, contractors, designers, assessors andinstallers, Retro Expo brings together a new supply chain that is fast emerging. A ConsumerDay aimed at homeowners interested in refurbishment squares the circle of Green-Dealstakeholders.

Already a 28 billion industry in the UK,the refurbishment of domestic dwellings, schools, hospitals and commercial propertyis the big growth sector in the built environment.Retro Expo will provide visitors with an essentialguide to the technologies, products and servicesthat can help the industry to face up toa daunting challenge.

VenueRetro Expo is staged at the NEC, Birmingham. The NEC provides all the exhibition, conferenceand awards venue facilities in one location. The NEC provides ample car parking for allshow visitors and was chosen for its central location, being just 10 minutes from Birmingham, an hour fromLondon and easily accessed from elsewhere dueto excellent transport links.

DatesRetro Expo takes place from Tuesday 30thto Thursday 1st November.

The Green Deal Summit & Green Deal BuyersForum takes place on Tuesday 30thto Wednesday 31st November.

Retrofit is the future. The age of mass public sector construction programmes and the housebuilding boom are over for now. The future of the construction industry is about making themost of the building stock we already have, and reducing its carbon footprint the driver. Withthe existing building stock accounting for 43% of all of the UKs carbon emissions, reducing theenergy consumption of those properties is one of the governments top priorities.

The Green DealThe Green Deal is the governments flagship initiative to drive the energy efficient refurbishmentof 26 million homes and 1.8 million commercial properties throughout the UK. It is set to belaunched in October 2012 with a raft of major players set to enter the market. The Green Dealis a major opportunity for a range of manufacturers and service suppliers. A recent Ernst &Young report commissioned by British Gas forecast that the energy efficiency market, driven byThe Green Deal could be worth 800m per anum by 2020, and could see 14 billion in privateinvestment injected in to the economy.

Domestic Housing Market26 million homes in the UK account for 26% of the UKstotal CO2 emissions. Many homes are cold, damp and unfit for the21st Century. The homeowner, tenant and government areready for change.

Affordable Housing MarketRegistered Social Landlords and Local Authorities rented 3.97 millionhomes in 2010. Much of this housing stock originates from the post-war housing boom, and represents some of the most energy-inefficientstock of all.

With the government better able to legislate, the social housingsector, RSLs and Local Authorities are expected to be major playersin the initial waves of activity. A recent Homes and CommunitiesAgency (HCA) survey found that 53 Local Authorities were planningto participate in The Green Deal.

Commercial Property Market1.8 million Commercial properties in the UK account for 17% ofthe UKs total C02 emissions. With fewer stakeholders, each withseemingly more to gain by reducing energy bills, the commercialproperty sector should represent the lowest hanging fruit. Yetprogress in refurbishing existing stock has been slowest in thissector so far, due to a lack of measurable evidence and a lack ofconsensus between building owners and occupiers.

However, The Green Deal promises to be the mechanism to drivecommercial refurbishment. With 597 million square metres of retail, office space and industrial facilities to upgrade and a market as yetuntapped, now is the time to promote your solutions to thecommercial sector.

Public Sector MarketSchools, hospitals and community buildings as well as central andlocal government administrative centres face tough short termcarbon reduction targets. By 2015, the UK government has pledgedto achieve a 25% cut in emissions from public sector buildings.Meanwhile, the cut of major capital construction projects hasfocused attention on making more of what the sector already has, with a raft of refurbishment projects underway or in the pipeline.

Do I therefore contact the Secretary General at E2B directly, or through you Marta? MBE KTN is one of our core partners on the event, along with all other BRE-linked agencies. Id be really interested in Chris and the Skanska/GE JV team providing a case study on commercial retrofit and the market potential forcommercial retrofit generally. Perhaps, Chris, could advise how best to organise this? I would also be really interested in the JV taking part in our Green Deal Buyers Programme, and potentially having a presence in theexhibition too. Finally, I know Arup are pioneers in BIM, and we are keen to look at ways in which the use of BIM can be applied to retrofit projects there isa perception that it is a new build process. Perhaps we could also discuss this? Best wishes David PierpointBusiness Development Director

Chris, please see attached conference brochure thatmay be of interest. I met David at a TSB event where they announced the upcoming call for non-domestic building retrofit. Laura, you may like to include this event Retro-Expo in the next MBE KTN communication. Kind regards,Marta Marta Fernandez, CEng, PhD, FRSAAssociate Director | Global Research
