JUNIOR GRADE: YEAR 3 - LESSON 4

What’s the best news you can imagine being told?

What’s the worst news you can imagine being told?

What news was David told in v 4?

Why might that, in one way, have been good news for David?

David mourned for both King Saul and his best friend Jonathan. As David was a singer and a musician, it was natural for him to write a song abouthis great sadness. What does he say in his song about the two men who had died?

David was a strong, brave soldier, yet he was full of sadness when he heard this bad news. There is a story in the Bible about the death of a friend of Jesus. What did Jesus do when Lazarus died? You’ll find the answer in John 11:35.

It is not always brave not to be upset and not to cry. Sometimes that just makes us feel worse for much longer. Next time you are really sad, remember that the Lord Jesus knows what it feels like and ask him to comfort you.

JUNIOR GRADE: YEAR 3 - LESSON 6THE PHARISEE

AND THE TAX COLLECTOR(Luke 18:9-14)

The answers to these questions are in Luke 18:9-14.

What were the two men in the story?

Where did Jesus say that thisincident took place?

What did they both go to the temple to do?

What did the Pharisee say in his prayer?

What did the tax collector say in his prayer?

What did the Pharisee do twice each week?

What did the tax collector not do as he prayed?

What did the tax collector do as he prayed? Whose prayer did God hear and

answer?

God knows what is in our hearts. He knew that the Pharisee’s heart was full of pride and that the tax collector’s heart was full of sadness for his sins. Turn each word round to see how God wants us to come to him in prayer.

HOW TO PRAY (2)(Matthew 6:11-15)

Verse 12

God forgives those who are truly sorry for their sins. What kind of things do you ask him to forgive?

But if we are forgiven, God expects us to forgive those who hurt us. How do others hurt you?

Have you forgiven them?

LEAD US NOT INTOTEMPTATION ...

What kind of things tempt you?

Write a prayer asking God to keep you from temptation.

... BUT DELIVER US FROM EVIL

God is much more powerful than the devil. The devil can tempt us, but God can deliver us. Our job is to ask God for the strength not to give in to temptation.

Jesus was tempted by the devil and yet he never sinned. It’s not wrong to be tempted, but it is wrong to give in.

Next time you are tempted, remember that Jesus understands and that he can help you. Ask him for his help now.

The Lord Jesus didn’t need to pray aloud for his heavenly Father to hear him.Why do you think he prayed this prayer out loud?

Christian parents still teach their children to pray by praying aloud.

Problems often arise when there is a change of leader. Football teams take time to settle down under a new manager. Countries take a little while to get used to a new government. And Israel was unsettled when old King Solomon died. In fact, there were some political shenanigans! If you don’t know what shenanigans are, ask your teacher. It’s a great word!

Create a coloured illustrated story of what happened.

THE KINGDOM DIVIDED

(1 Kings 12:1-17)

Rehoboam (Solomon’s son) when to Shechem. All the Israelites had gone there to make him their king.

Jeroboam, who had worked for Solomon, went to Rehoboam and complained to him about the tax they had had to pay. He said he would back Rehoboam if he promised to cut the taxes.

Rehoboam told the people to go away for three days. He went to the elders to ask their advice. They told him to be generous to the people. Draw them in discussion.

He then asked his friends - who told him to raise the taxes as high as he liked! Show them talking and laughing together,

The people came back and Rehoboam told them what he had decided. He was going to be a harsh king and they’d better get used to it. Draw their sad and angry faces.

Only the small tribe of Judah accepted him as king. The people of Israel refused to have him rule over them. Draw the Israelites leaving for home.

Through Stephen God did great wonders and gave miraculous signs.

Some men from the synagogue began to argue with what Stephen was saying.

They said that he was speaking against God and against Moses.

They stirred up trouble among the people.

They got people to tell lies about Stephen and about what he was saying.

The leaders looked at Stephen and it seemed that his face was like the face of an angel.

Stephen spoke to the court and told them theirhistory.

The people were furious and gnashed their teeth at him.

Stephen looked to heaven and saw the glory of God and Jesus at the right hand of God.

The crowd picked up stones and threw them at him.

They took off their cloaks and laid them at Saul’s feet. He was watching and approving of Stephen’s death.
