Was born in Daugavpils on
25th September 1903 (at that
time Dvinsk, Russian
Empire).
In 1913 emigrated to the USA
along with his family. Died in
1970 in New York.
Mark Rothko is one of the
most influential artists of the
20 century's second part, the
founder of abstract
expressionism and color field
painting. His works of art can
be observed in world's most
famous galleries.
DAUGAVPILS MARK ROTHKO ART CENTRE IS LOCATED in the Artillery Arsenal
building (1833) of the Dinaburg Fortress. It is the place where the antiquity has
recovered and goes step for step with the modernity, forming the unique and inspiring
place for creativity expression.
«Nicolai Poliakoff (Coco the Clown) was born there – as was Joseph Rosen,
described as the Talmudic genius of his time. In 1903 Marcus Rothkowitz was
also born in the same city, Daugavpils in eastern Latvia....»

Museum of Mark Chagall in Vitebsk
“MARC CHAGALL AND THE
EUROPEAN AVANT-GARDISTS”
is the first collaboration project of
Daugavpils Mark Rothko Art Centre
and the Vitebsk Museum of Marc
Chagall (Belarus).
Besides the original artworks of
Marc Chagall, the lithographs of
many prominent artists of the 20th
century will be exhibited, among
them Braque, Matisse, Miró,
Picasso.
