News from our PrincipalDear Parents/Guardians,

Term Three has been a busy and eventful term full of highlights demonstrating our student’s strengths and accomplishments. On Thursday 15th September 2016, our Year 12 students, staff and families came together for an uplifting graduation dinner celebration. This was preceded by a Graduation Community Time where our community celebrated and acknowledged the proud achievements of our 14 graduating students. The students’ attainments have been outstanding. They leave the school equipped with a range of VET Qualifications, skills for work, skills for learning and skills for life and are now ready to take the next step in their journey towards a rich and fulfilling life.

Other highlights this Term, have included The Big Plan, which saw the largest number of families to date, involved in the Big Plan Workshop’s. Families came together to participate in after school workshops focussed on students’ strengths, dreams and future life planning.

This Term, Senior School students attended the Abilities Expo at Crown where they carried out demonstrations of their hospitality and barista skills through pizza and coffee making. The students served coffee and pizza straight from our mobile coffee machine and pizza oven and it was a great hit with the Expo visitors.

Well done to Tiffany for performing a beautiful solo, This is Me, at the Abilities Expo. Well done to Seth, Tiffany, Matt and Hailey for their outstanding performance of three musical pieces at the WAESPAA conference at the Perth Convention Centre. Their strong and powerful performance was acknowledged by a standing ovation and a call for an encore. It was a very proud moment.

As you will be aware, our Business Plan 2014 - 2016 key focus areas are: Excellence in Teaching, Learning and Student Achievement; Health and Well Being Pathways and Community Partnerships. As an Independent Public School (IPS), we have, in consultation with our community, set targets in each of these Business Plan Focus areas. Our progress towards these targets has been reviewed throughout the three year Business Plan cycle. We are now at the end of that cycle and have completed a self-assessment of our progress against the targets and the Delivery and Performance Agreement. Next Term, the school will take part in an external review through the Department of Educational Services. We are very proud of the achievements of our school and students over this Business Plan Cycle 2014 – 2016 and have valued the reflection and self-assessment process, enabling ongoing development and improvement. We look

forward to further consultation with our School Community to set our strategic direction for the next Business Plan Cycle 2017 - 2019.

As a Teacher Development School, recognised for our expertise in transition planning and health and wellbeing, we have now worked with approximately 50 schools and 300 teachers and leaders across the state, building educational skills and knowledge. This Term, the school was featured in the Sound Telegraph newspaper, in an article entitled, “Centre Raises Bar for Special Needs”. The article recognised the school’s knowledge and skills in special educational needs and highlighted our extensive work and impact on other schools as a Teacher Development School.

Our School’s core purpose is for “Every student to flourish with the skills, knowledge and optimum wellbeing to lead fulfilling lives”. This purpose is supported through the schools’ strong focus on health and wellbeing using a Positive Education Model - HAPEER. As part of this, students have been participating in Character Strengths curriculum this term.

Character strengths are ways of thinking, feeling and behaving that come naturally and easily to a person and that enable high functioning performance. Alex Linley, 2006.

Students are focusing on the six character strengths which support groups, families and organisations to flourish. You may be familiar with the school’s six Flourishing strengths depicted in our large poster in the front office. The strengths are: Gratitude, Hope, Kindness, Zest, Teamwork and Curiosity. You may also have noticed our character strengths tree which displays the twenty four universally recognised character strengths. Look out for them, next time you are in the office.

Many classes have also participated in a trial of mindfulness practice this term through theSmiling Mind App. Next Term, students will be participating in social and emotional learning lessons through PATHS.

Finally, I would like to thank all of our parents who attended the recent Parent Network Group. If you weren’t able to come along we would love to see you at our next get together in Term Four. Look out for the flier.

I wish all our staff, students, parents and guardians a safe and happy term break.

Thank you

Kim McCollum Principal

One of the main focuses for Term 3 has been Transition. Our year 9 students will be moving to senior school next year. Additionally, current year 6 students from various schools will be attending our school on a regular basis, to ensure that they have a smooth transition into the 2017 school year.

At the end of term 2, the parents of our current year 9 students attended a morning tea at our school. Parents gained information regarding the process involved in transitioning to year 10. We had a wonderful attendance and it provided parents with the opportunity to understand what lies ahead for their child.

Starting in week six of Term 3, and running until week five of Term 4, year 6 students will participate in our transition program. The program is designed to ensure every student feels supported and develops a sense of belonging and connectedness to the school. Students participate in team building activities and familiarise themselves with their new environment. During the process, our staff get to know each child individually, and the students are provided with the opportunity to build relationships with their peers.

We are looking forward to meeting our new students and supporting their transition.

Collins year 7

Term 3 has been busy and exciting. The class was introduced to the Character Strengths Program. This program is designed to promote positive wellbeing and self-esteem within our students by increasing resilience and developing positive social skills.

The six Character Strengths we are focusing on are:

• Kindness • Hope• Curiosity• Zest• Teamwork• Gratitude

The first character strength introduced was Kindness. The students were asked to discuss how they could express kindness at school and at home. The students have recorded their responses in their Character Strengths Journal. Students watched a program on Random Acts of Kindness and then discussed various ways they could show kindness. Some thoughts amongst class members were: writing a nice note to a friend, family member or teacher; making something for someone; and giving positive compliments to class and family members. During the term, class members have identified and shared various random acts of kindness they have noticed or experienced. We have also started making friendship bracelets as an act of kindness.

For the remainder of the year, the class will be introduced to the other Character Strengths. This will give the students the opportunity to demonstrate and develop all strengths.

anzac year 8It has been a busy and exciting time for Anzac, especially during the Literacy Blocks this term.

Students have been fine-tuning their procedure writing skills to help them explain how to make or do something. The classroom is now filled with bright, shiny, sun-catching fish as a result! Students also followed a procedure to conduct an ice melting experiment to determine what factors would affect the rate the ice melted. This provided a great opportunity to make scientific predictions and to practice timing and measuring skills.

Warnbro CHS ESC has recently added some brilliant new reading resources to their collection. Students now have access to a wider range of books including phonic-based decodable readers with engaging, age-relevant topics; including both fiction and non-fiction texts.

To assist students with their word decoding skills, a whole-school Morphographic Spelling Program has been implemented. This direct-instruction program allows students to rehearse various prefixes and suffixes and learn how to decipher unknown words for meaning. It has been great to watch students transfer their new decoding skills during other lessons.

Stirling year 7This term the students have been busy building on their Maths skills from last semester, and also learning some new tricks along the way.

With all of our students reading three digit numbers, many are now extending themselves further and reading numbers into the millions. By using interactive media like Apple T.V., iPads and Place Value Charts, the students have learnt that the value of the digit is determined by where the digit is placed in the entire number.

Students have been using Kmart and Big W catalogues to help build their mathematical understanding of money. The skills our class members are learning include comparing and ordering money amounts, reading and writing amounts of money, and calculating money.

We have also explored concepts involving time. It is very easy for some students to confuse the hands on a clock and read the time incorrectly; therefore it is vital to master the difference between the hour and minute hands on an analogue clock. Some students have also extended their mathematical language by using the terminology “past” or “to” the hour. There are many opportunities for students to extend their knowledge of time at home. You can support them by reading and discussing the time with your child in many situations such as at home, in the car or when you are out and about.

darwin year 9

Darwin has been focusing on Protective Behaviours during Term 3.

The two key themes in Protective Behaviours are:

• We all have the right to feel safe at all times

• We can talk to someone about anything no matter what it is

This term we are focusing on “we can talk to someone about anything no matter what it is”. In Darwin 9, we discussed the meaning of the words “someone” and “anything”. Tayla correctly identified that “someone” refers to talking to someone you know and trust. When we discussed the word

“anything”, the students had some excellent responses. Emily stated the word “anything” means you can talk about anything good or bad, big or small.

We have also explored safe and unsafe secrets. The students brainstormed some excellent examples to demonstrate a clear understanding of safe and unsafe secrets. Safe secrets are ones that have a deadline or a surprise at then end, such as organising a party for your mum. Unsafe secrets are ones that can cause to a person to experience early warning signs and uncomfortable feelings. The students have learnt that you should always tell a trusted adult when you are asked to keep a secret that makes you feel unsafe.

At the beginning of Protective Behaviour sessions, the students spend 20 minutes with the school’s speech therapist. They discuss and practise aspects of social skills such as identifying qualities of yourself and others, positive body language and turn taking in conversations. This is explicitly taught through role-plays and social games.

We recently had two incursions relating to Protective Behaviours. One was Staying Safe Online and the other was discussing the impact of Risk-taking Behaviours. Both incursions have helped us to understand how to protect ourselves and stay safe.

Stirling year 9The Stirling 9 staff and students would like to welcome their new teacher Ms Jennifer Pritchard. Jenni is very excited to be here and is looking forward to working with and getting to know everyone here at Warnbro CHS ESC.

Term 3 has been very busy for Stirling 9. We have had students participating in the Music Rocks program. Two of the Music Rock’s students, Hailey and Seth, were chosen to play at the Western Australian Education Support Principals and Administrators Association (WAESPAA) conference this term. This was a wonderful opportunity for them to show off their new skills they have learnt playing musical instruments.

Keanan and Michael chose to attend the Milo All Abilities Cricket Carnival that was held at the Larkhill Sports Complex. They had a great time learning new skills and competing against other schools.

We also attended the Perth Convention Centre to watch the Circus Quirkess. The students enjoyed circus acts from all over the world. We caught a bus to Rockingham and a train to Perth. This was a wonderful opportunity for students to learn and practise their travel training skills on public transport.

Michael, Keanan and Hailey have been attending Bike Club every Monday. They are very pleased with themselves as they have now completed their bikes and have taken them home to ride. Eryn, Seth and Tiana are now attending Bike Club and are busy working on building and restoring their bikes.

Last term our students were chosen by the WCHS staff for displaying the three expected behaviours, which are Being Responsible, Being Respectful and Being your Best. For this they were rewarded with a fun filled session of playing laser tag on the school oval.

Interview with Kanyon

What are you good at that nobody knows?

I think everybody knows I’m good at technology but I don’t think anybody knows that I can make a great pizza.

If you had the chance to do it all again is there anything you would do differently?

I’m very pleased with the path I am following and having a chance to get work experience in the Information Technology Industry is all that I have ever wanted.

What are your long term career goals?

To get a permanent full time job in a school as an Information Technology Technician or in an Apple Store working with all the new technology.

Do you have any plans for continued study?

I feel like I am always studying in the IT Industry because you have to be knowledgeable of the ongoing updates. I’m currently doing work experience at Warnbro Community High School and when I’m not working on computers I am learning new things when I am at work. The next time I will be doing any official studying at a TAFE will be when I get a job in the IT Industry.

What do you see yourself doing 5 years from now?

Working in a school environment as an IT Support Technician or working in a Computer Store, selling products and fixing computers.

During Term 3, staff and students from the Transport & Logistics class travelled to Belridge High School Education Support Centre. The students participated in a variety of activities that related to their Transport & Logistics’ Certificate. These activities included stocktaking, packing fragile items in boxes, delivering package, collecting recycling and the correct disposal of recyclable items.

The students also participated in an obstacle course race against the Belridge students. The students had to carefully wrap an egg in packing material and place it into a box. They then had to transport the box on a trolley through an obstacle course without damaging the egg. The Warnbro students delivered their egg without any damage.

We all had a great day and learned a lot from seeing the way another school completed the Transport & Logistics course. The Belridge students also prepared a scrumptious morning tea for everyone to enjoy.

auto and Construction years 11 and 12

Term 3 has been a big one for the students in the Outback ABC class with highlights being welcoming a new student, Harris, into our class and Keegan celebrating a significant birthday in recent weeks!

We have finally received the keys to our new Construction Shed. The class spent some time doing an audit of the equipment we had, moving it into the new shed and then purchasing some new tools. The shed is having some final facilities installed and is shaping up to be a great place to run our enterprise from. The boys have been working on their planter boxes in the shed. We’ve had some individual designs this term that are looking great.

The students have participated in a number of English and Maths tasks relating to the Olympics. This has included having our own Mini Olympics, which has been a great opportunity for the students to show off some unique skills, including cotton ball shot put and paper plate discus!

Our Year 12 students have just a few weeks remaining of their official schooling. They are getting quite excited about the plethora of events coming up to celebrate, including the Graduation Dinner, Farewell Community Time, Year 12 Breakfast and the Valedictory Ceremony. Of course, we will miss them when they go so we will be making the most of our time with them over the last few weeks!

Students from the Hospitality class are fast approaching the end of a very productive year at South Metropolitan TAFE. All students are on track to achieve their Certificate l in Hospitality. Lecturers from TAFE have been very impressed with the students’ level of knowledge, skills and their positive attitudes this year.

Students apply the knowledge and skills they have gained at TAFE into the running of our enterprise, Coffee Up Café. Students make and deliver coffees to staff each week. Students have excelled in all areas of our enterprise. We would like to take this opportunity to give a huge THANK YOU to all the staff for your ongoing support. Your support allows the students to enhance their hospitality and barista skills every week.

This term we have re-introduced the Reading A-Z program with great results so far. Sessions are run in small groups with a focus on reading fluency and comprehension. Sessions are tailored to suit the differing abilities of the groups. The students are gaining confidence with reading aloud and becoming more involved in discussions about texts read. It has been great to see the students being so enthusiastic during the sessions.

We have also been continuing with our weekly visits to Gracehaven Nursing Home to run a café. The students have

become highly skilled in the preparation and running of the Café, much to the joy of the residents we serve. The students and the residents gain so much from this experience.

This term the students chose to use a more technological format in the classroom. We began filming ourselves completing tasks within the classroom. This has encouraged more student interaction and to date has been a great success. We have seen a significant development in the students’ confidence, especially speaking in front of an audience. It has also showcased their understanding of the stages of food production. The use of film has vastly changed the atmosphere, and eagerness to participate, which we hope to continue in future assessments.

Additionally, Hospitality students have been working extremely hard in their options classrooms. During week 4, the students participated in a practical assessment for Food Technology where they were required to prepare and produce a meal using a dry cooking technique. It was fantastic to see the students recognise their own independence skills, and share with their peers the importance of learning to prepare meals for themselves.

Leadership Class years 11 and 12The Leadership Class acknowledged the importance of literacy by facilitating activities for the community as part of annual Book Week celebrations this term. Students dressed up in character costume, read stories, sang songs and coordinated corresponding craft activities with young children from the local community.

The Hospitality Class also participated by operating Coffee up Café and the Directions Class provided morning tea following the theme of 2 Fruit and 5 Veg. During reflection and evaluation processes students have decided to expand the event to include all senior school enterprises in 2017. Well done for leading and facilitating a successful community partnership project Leadership Class!

directions Class year 13

This term we have been very busy with catering for various events within the school. We have catered for the Middle School Big Plan sessions for students and their families and also provided a beautiful morning tea for the whole school staff. We also joined forces with other senior school classes to provide the food for the public library’s Book Week Celebration.

We have started our “Using Transport” excursions to develop our skills in travel training. We recently visited the Rockingham Foreshore. We used public transport, both the bus and the train, to get to the foreshore where we went to a café and ordered some food with our hard earned profits from our successful class enterprise. We had a fantastic time and had never seen bigger pieces of cake!

The Directions class have been given the responsibility of maintaining the undercover area in senior school. This includes sweeping, keeping the area tidy, watering the plants and moving the plants out into the sunshine.

Directions class has bee busily putting together the finishing touches to the ASDAN modules that they have worked so hard on all year. It is so rewarding to see all our hard work come together.

bike program The hard working Bike Club team have continued their endeavours in Term 3 at Warnbro CHS ESC. Despite the bad weather, the Bike Club has remained open, and students have worked admirably through the cold. Fortunately we have a new shed awning, which protects us from the rain.

Ward, a new student volunteer, has started assisting in the program. He joins fellow students Grant, Jack and Alex and our upstanding community volunteer, Mr Eric Maddock.

Many new bikes have been donated to the program this term, including a full ute load from a community supporter, Mr Harries. I would like to take this opportunity to express a big thank you to all who have donated their unwanted bikes to us. If you have a bike that you no long wish to keep, and would like to donate it to our program, please feel free to call me on 0423 798 452. If your child wishes to rebuild a bike, which they can either keep or donate to someone in need, please get them to talk to their teacher about being added to our waiting list.

CaLm programThe Creativity, Active Learning and Mindfulness Program or CALM, has continued into Term 3 at the Baldivis Children’s Forest.

The program aims to promote success and to build positivity and resilience in students through problem solving, active learning and relaxation.

Students were involved in creating a small totem to leave on site as a reminder of their presence. It had to be made with natural materials that could be responsibly gathered from the site. The students also participated in team games, orienteering and bushwalking.

CALM mornings have continued to include a short mindfulness session at the end of each visit which supports positive thoughts and relaxation. Students participation in CALM has been outstanding.

big plan “The Big Plan” is a student-centred plan arising from the premise of “What would it take for this young man or woman to have an interesting and fulfilling life, where they can get to know people who may become their friends, and are able to make their contribution to their local community?”

This term the year 9s, in collaboration with their families and support network, have started the process of preparing

themselves for the very exciting prospect of what their lives after school might look like. The Big Plan runs every two weeks for 5 sessions. It is one of the key steps in the school’s transition planning at Warnbro CHS ESC.

The Big Plan is a journey of self-discovery where students are able to connect with who they are and explore what life they would like to pursue in the future. They come away with a personalised plan of positive action steps that show how to get there. The plan gives direction, hope, motivation and purpose to a life that sparks joy.

These action plans are reflected and built upon as the student journeys through our school. The Big Plan is an important and rewarding experience that supports our students to make purposeful connections in the community.

Literacy NotesCreating reading and writing opportunities at home can be great to support your child to read and write. You can do this by:

• Showing a genuine interest in your child’s reading, writing and viewing of all different text types.

• Letting them see you read and write and telling them why you are reading and writing.

• Talk to your child about their understanding and encourage their reading and writing efforts.

• Share family histories and stories through talking and encourage your child to talk to older family members.

• Discuss television shows or films that you have watched together.

• Encourage your child to develop their own library of books.

• Talk about world events and encourage your child to look at the different sides of a story to form their own opinions.

Speech & Language therapy and occupational therapy Speech Pathology and Occupational Therapy have worked with individual students, groups and whole classes in the areas of language, social skills, speech, literacy, and emotional and sensory regulation and processing.

The Social Skills groups, which occur weekly, have been enjoyable learning experiences for all. All students have participated enthusiastically in the sessions. This term we have been exploring two different learning areas

1. The importance of assertiveness

2. Identifying different qualities of our own and other people’s personalities.

mathematic Notes Every child and adult needs to know and understand mathematics. It’s part of our everyday life. We count money, measure things, sort from biggest to smallest, work out the time, check the temperature, interpret charts and graphs and read maps, just to name a few. Maths is all around us! Children are taught mathematics in school, but research shows that families are an essential part of this learning process. In other words, by doing maths with your children and supporting maths learning at home, you can make a great difference.

Here are some ideas on of how you can support your child to develop life skills alongside maths skills at home.

• Keeping a calendar to record significant events is an important skill for life. It familiarises people with the days of the week and the months of the year as well as help develop a sense of how long time is. When using the calendar at home, ask your child to record significant events such as birthdays and holidays. Teach your child to plan and schedule events into their calendar as they arise. This may include school events, job interviews, work shifts, doctor’s appointments and social events. Check the calendar daily and work out what events are coming up, these may be in days, weeks or months. You can support your child in further planning for events, such as working out when they need to buy a birthday present by or when they could start shopping for a dress for the school ball, and also record these also into the calendar.

• Daily schedules will support your child’s organisational skills as well as help them to read and understand time. When your child has an event to attend, ask or help him/her to work out exactly how long it will take to get to a destination, and what time he/she would need to leave to arrive on time. Include the amount of time he/she will need to get ready and how long it will take to walk to the bus or train if he/she is using public transport. You can further link this to important life skills such as working out when you need to leave an event, so they are not walking home alone in the dark, or they can plan for someone to pick them up.

• Whether it is a Calendar on the fridge, a diary, or an app on their tablet or phone, they are all important tools for learning lifelong skills that will enhance your child’s independence now and into the future.

Tips that support mathematical learning at home:

• Role model the use of mathematical skills in the home, such as working out the time, measuring milk and writing in the calendar.

• Always talk about math in positive ways regardless of your own mathematics background. Talking negatively about math to your child, can lead to “math anxiety”.

• Talk out loud as you do everyday tasks. Talking out loud allows children to hear how you think and helps them develop important skills for “thinking things out” and solving problems.

Calendar Problem Solving:

If I cut these squares out of the 2016 Calendar for August, can you work out the missing dates?

Wellbeing team Positive Education has been implemented across our school with our HAPEER Model. A focus on improving physical, mental, social and emotional wellbeing are all part of the Positive Health domain. Living a healthy lifestyle is essential for leading a flourishing life and helps to improve learning, happiness and quality of life.

It is important to practice habits to maintain and improve your physical and psychological health. Here are some tips to help you do this:

• Stay Active by Exercising- Aim to get thirty minutes a day, at least five days a week, of exercise. Activities you could try are playing a team or individual sport, going to the gym or going for a walk.

• Get Enough Sleep- Make sure you are getting enough sleep. Adults should aim for at least eight hours a night and teenagers should aim for eight to ten hours a night. Establish a sleep routine in which you go to bed and wake up at the same time each day, and remember to turn off all electronic devices at least thirty minutes before bedtime.

• Eat a Healthy and Balanced Diet- Try to eat at least five serves of vegetables and two serves of fruit each day, as well as limiting the amount of processed food you have in your diet. Sit down to eat your food and engage in mindful eating practices by savouring the taste of your food.

• Drink Enough Water- You should be aiming to stay hydrated with at least eight glasses of water per day.

• Visit Your Doctor Regularly- Regular check-ups with your doctor will ensure you are in optimum health.

• Practice Gratitude- Write down three things you are grateful for each day.

• Have a Laugh- Laughing can help to boost blood flow and make you happier and healthier.

• Deep Breathing- Practice deep and slow breathing for five minutes per day.

• Think positively- Having an optimistic outlook and thinking positively lessens your chances of worrying, and therefore reduces stress.

physical Education Excursion

Many of our students from different year levels participated in the Milo All Abilities Cricket Carnival hosted by representatives of the Western Australian Cricket Association (WACA). Our students participated with enthusiasm in several fun-filled warm up activities, and then competed against other schools in games of cricket.

Everyone had a fantastic time at the event and the students were to be commended on their sportsmanship. It was fantastic to see students from all the schools interacting socially. Some of the warm up activities were highly entertaining, including several fun chasing and throwing games, that set a great mood for the day.

Overall this was an excellent day and all students and staff involved went back to school exhausted and happy.

the amazing race Excursion Simply Amazing!

One of the highlights of this term was the ‘The Amazing Race’ excursion.

Supporting the ASDAN unit ‘Using Transport’, an excursion was created to test student’s ability to use transport. Students had to catch trains and buses to find a final destination to help develop their understanding of how the Transperth system works.

Students and staff were divided into four groups. Much like the Amazing Race television show, each group was given a clue to commence their journey, they then had a series of challenges to complete, before ending up at the final destination.

After posing for group photos, the Red Group was the first to depart. They were directed to Port Kennedy with an onward journey to Mandurah and Perth CBD. Next to depart was the Green Group, whose journey commenced in Rockingham and onwards to Bullcreek and Perth. The

Blue Group’s journey included stops in Warnbro, Murdoch and Perth. The Yellow Group was last to depart and headed towards Cockburn and Bullcreek before joining the other groups in Perth. Upon arrival in Perth they were given their final clue. This provided them with three locations to find, before heading to their final destination King’s Park, for a barbeque lunch.

Despite the wet weather on the day the staff and students had an excellent time. The students demonstrated some incredible skills including reading Transperth timetables, problem solving, teamwork and independence.

Thanks to students and staff for a memorable Amazing Race!

teacher development School (tdS) At the end of Term 2 we ran our first Positive Education TDS event. This Professional Learning opportunity was for Principals and Administrators of schools interested in gaining an understanding of Positive Education and how it can help schools to flourish. In the workshop we shared how we implement Positive Education and the benefits of placing wellbeing at the heart of the curriculum. The workshop supported participants to help their schools meet Education Department priorities. There has been further interest from participants in attending future workshops we run in Positive Education.

This term we have continued providing transition support to schools. We have connected with primary and high schools in the South East Corridor Network and are working with them to develop their school processes that will support the transition needs of students with disability. This is a fabulous opportunity for us to assist other schools and learn from those working in a variety of contexts. It also increases our network of support for students with disabilities.

the tribes Community Circle Building community spirit is a process that is supported in classrooms through the Tribes Community Circle. The class Community Circle is step one in establishing a caring and positive environment that creates opportunities for students to participate and contribute. Students are engaged in fun games and activities, and opportunities to connect with each other.

Creating inclusion for all students within the learning community is achieved by using the Tribes Learning Community agreements of:

• Attentive listening

• Appreciation/No put-downs

• Right to participate

• Mutual respect

Throughout the Community Circle all students are given opportunities to be acknowledged and to feel connected to others.

Cyberbullying & being Cybersmart This term the students watched a production on cyber safety titled Screen Name. The performance focused on the more serious dangers of the cyber world and how to make safe decisions online. The concepts the production addressed included: online protective behaviours, grooming and cyber predators, safety of personal information, control of friend networks, positing considerations, bystander intervention, and the dangers of online and offline meetings.

Here are some important tips for staying safe online:

1. If you are being cyberbullied:

a. Ignore it. Don’t respond to and don’t forward cyberbullying messages.

b. Tell someone. Tell your Teacher, your Mum or Dad or a trusted adult. Or you can call the Kids Helpline on 1800 55 1800, or visit their website.

c. Keep the evidence. This can be useful in tracking the bully. Save texts, emails, online conversations or voicemails as proof.

d. Block the person who is cyberbullying.

e. Don’t open or read messages from cyber bullies.

2. Be aware that your future employers can ‘google’ you on the internet and will be able to see any pictures you have posted on the internet. This could affect you in gaining employment.

3. Set your Facebook or Twitter accounts to the highest security settings so strangers cannot see your details.

4. Do not put pictures of people up on the internet without their permission, even if they are your friends.

5. Do not put any personal information up on the internet, unless it is a secure website.

positive behaviour Support (pbS) Warnbro CHS ESC has a whole school approach to supporting Positive Behaviour. The Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) process is a framework for improving student academic and behaviour outcomes to ensure all students have access to the most effective and accurately implemented instructional and behavioural practices and interventions possible.

This term, all classes have been focussing on teaching our expected behaviours. During Community Time, each class has taken on a particular behaviour expectation and taught it to the rest of the school. It has been fabulous to see each class following and using the PBS lesson format to teach skills such as:

• Using our manners

• Showing attentive listening

• Lining up for class and entering class appropriately

• Allowing personal space

• Keeping our hands and feet to ourselves

• Being on time to class

• Wearing full school uniform
