Parent Opinion Survey

The closing date for the online Parent Opinion Survey has been extended to Sunday 18 August 2019. Parents who received an email inviting them to participate in the survey have until 11:59PM Sunday 18 August 2019 to complete it. If you were one of the lucky families please consider participating as we value your input. Lions Club Public Speaking Competition

Well done to Tom McKenzie-McHarg, Zoe Stamp, Lachy

O’Brien, Lachi O’Sullivan, Ivy Edwards, Irena Purnell, Ollie

Boddenberg and Chelsea Dawson-Leitch who represented our

school with stellar speeches at the Junior Lions Club Speaking

Competition on Wednesday 7th August.

Congratulations to Zoe Stamp who won the Year 5/6 category,

and to Ivy Edwards and Lachy O’Brien who won equal 1st in the

Year 3/4 category.

Year 3/4 Charlie & The Chocolate Factory excursion Students in Years 3 & 4 will be travelling to Melbourne on Wednesday to see the stage show of Charlie and The Chocolate Factory. Students need to be at school at 7am and will arrive back at Yack at approximately 8.30pm. They will need to brink a day pack with their morning tea, lunch and a drink bottle. On the way home we will be stopping at the Wallan Road Stop for dinner. Please send $10 in a clearly labelled envelope with your child's name on it tomorrow if you have not already done so. This is to be handed to the classroom teacher and will be kept safe until the day of our trip. We will keep a checklist to ensure that all students have money to buy their dinner. Colouring books and reading books are welcome on the bus during travel, but no other items or digital devices permitted. OSHC Thank you to all the families who support and use our OSHC program. Bookings are very high with a lot of days being full on occasions. Monday afternoons are extremely busy and at the moment this session is fully booked with permanent bookings so we are unable to take any casual bookings for a Monday afternoon until further notice.

Year 3-4 ‘Eggsperiments’

As part of our Science study of forces, Year 3-4 students

completed 3 egg experiments last week:

1. Will Humpty Dumpty Crack? – result: 4 half egg shells could carry at least 1990gr of canned food without cracking!

2. Egg Drop – result: 5 egg casualties but the remaining 25 egg test dummies survived the balcony drop test. Observation: Bubble wrap, newspapers and socks are excellent ‘shock taking’ materials. Parachutes require more testing.

3. Unbreakable Egg – result: 4 egg casualties mainly due to deviating from the procedure or using limp straws. Observation: No matter which way the straw egg contraption landed it did not break the egg.

Learning:

Most eggs survived being dropped from a height of 2 metres

if we built the protection contraption correctly so the force

(of gravity) travelled up the contraption materials (stiffened

straws) and past the egg.

Science this week was very ‘eggciting!’

Next week will be experimenting with buoyancy.

School News

School Uniforms – Soft Shell Jackets I will be putting in an order for soft shell jackets next week if there is enough interest. If you would like to order one please let Sandra know. 5/6 Skiing

Unfortunately, our planned Cross Country ski trip had to be

postponed last Friday due to blizzard conditions. While this is

disappointing, the safety of the students and the enjoyment of

the day are our main concerns. The backup day will be Friday

30th August, providing the next two downhill ski days go

ahead.

Our ski days require much work and communication with Resort Management, ski hire venues and the bus company (as well as families from two schools). A decision to go ahead or not is made at around 2pm on the day prior to allow for communication with our partners. This decision is informed by reports from the Bureau of Meteorology, Vic Emergency, DET and contacts on Falls Creek. Previous experience has taught us that winds above 30kmph make for a challenging day for first time skiers, and pushing ahead on these days has turned some kids off skiing for good. On occasion, we have also postponed a trip late in the evening after receiving an updated weather warning. If this is the case, an email would be sent out as soon as the decision is made. We aim to maximise the participation in and enjoyment of our ski program and take pleasure in the success our students achieve on these trips. Fingers crossed that the weather stays good for this Friday.

School Athletic Sports Thanks to those parents and carers who have offered to help out at this week’s athletics carnival at Les O’Brien Athletics Precinct, Albury. The parent helper timetable is included in the newsletter, though there are a number of parents not listed who have offered help but will be ‘floating’ on the day. You can see which age groups still need assistance. We also need an official timer to help with all of the running events. This is an important task, so if you can help with this or with one of the age groups please let Sandra or Brendan know. The following is a repeat of what was in the last newsletter, but important nonetheless.

- Student groupings are based on age (not year level), which is the age they have turned or will be turning by December 31, 2019. Children aged 5 or 6 are counted as one age group. This is the same for children aged 9 or 10 and 12 or 13.

- Students in 9/10, 11, and 12/13 age groups are eligible to qualify for District level competition, based on their performance at the House Athletics.

- There will be no senior relays on the day – relay teams for District Athletics will be selected from running events at the House Athletics. Qualifying for the 800m will be held back at school.

- All students should wear their ‘house’ colours, along with suitable footwear. Please make sure children are dressed suitably for the weather – at this time of year it can be anything from cold and damp, through to warm and sunny.

- There is no canteen available, so students need to bring enough food and drink to last the day.

- Buses will be leaving school at 9am.

If you haven’t yet returned the permission form please do so tomorrow.
