A Message from Mrs. Braswell
Dear Parents,
At Brookwood, we are working very hard to make sure the students are provided with a safe and enjoyable place to eat
lunch. Your child may come home and tell you that some things have changed at lunchtime. For example, students who
pack a lunch should be bringing a drink from home or purchasing a drink in the lunchroom rather than making multiple
trips to the water fountain. Bringing the water bottle that is used throughout the day in the classroom is also a good
option. These same students should be bringing their own condiments, cutlery and napkins from home. This will ensure
that the students purchasing a school lunch have time to get through the line and eat their lunch.
We are encouraging those students who purchase a school lunch to get everything they need while going through the
line the first time. It is more challenging for our staff to supervise when students constantly ask to get up for additional
items such as napkins and condiments. By this time in the year, everyone should be in a routine and know what they
need.
During your child’s lunchtime, there will be 2 or 3 short periods of time when students are asked to be quiet and focus on
eating. This increases the amount of food that the students are eating and it results in lowering the noise level, making
for a safer and more relaxing lunchtime. Students are encouraged to socialize with their immediate neighbors during the
remainder of the time they are in the lunchroom, and that includes most of the 30 minute lunchtime.
Your support when discussing this with your child is very much appreciated. Please feel free to contact me should you
have any questions or concerns.
Exceptional Children’s Week March 7 - 11
Brookwood Elementary is celebrating Exceptional Children’s Week from March 7 – 11. Exceptional Children’s Week is a
time to promote awareness of children with exceptionalities and to spotlight our Special Education teachers who work
with these great kids every day!
Beginning Monday, March 7, students will participate in “T-shirt support days”. Each day of the week, students and staff
will be asked to wear a designated color in support of the Learning Difference of the Day.
Monday - Autism - BLUE
Tuesday - Speech, Hearing - YELLOW
Wednesday - Dyslexia - RED
Thursday - ADHD, Sensory - ORANGE
Friday - Down Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy – GREEN
Our Special Ed teachers will be featured on the morning news each day, and the students will learn how they specifically
help their classmates with these learning differences. Teachers will share books and videos with their students about
these same learning differences daily in their classrooms.
Thank you for supporting us as we shine some light on these special kids and their extraordinary teachers this week.
Pennies for the Playground
March 7-11 PTA will be collecting extra change to benefit our Pennies for the Playground fundraiser. All money raised will go towards new swings, which will enhance the playground experience for our special needs students! The classroom and the grade that collects the most money will win extra recess!

Merchant Rewards
A big thank you to all who contributed to our Merchant Rewards Contest. We should receive another $700 from Box Tops, along with many Coke Rewards and Campbell's Labels for Learning that can be used for media center books and other school supplies. If you have not signed your Kroger Plus Card to Brookwood, please do that online. Then our school will earn a donation without you doing another thing!
A huge thank you to the latest contest volunteers who worked tirelessly cutting and organizing box tops and labels, as well as entering Coke codes: Leslie Avel, Felicia DeShong, Jamie O'Neal, Amy Harper, Rachele Picardo, Elisabeth Smith and Katy Yurman.
We will still be collecting Box Tops and Coke Rewards for the rest of the year. Campbell's will be eliminating the Labels for Education program, so we will no longer be collecting the labels.
Congratulations to Our Grade Level Winner!
Third Place – 4th Grade Second Place – 2nd Grade
First Place - KINDERGARTEN. Kindergarten will earn an extra recess. The date will be announced at a later time.
