The more accurate with our future planning, the smoother we can make the transition for the children from one year level to the next. Parents are requested to contact the office of additional enrolments for Years Foundation – Year 6, if they have not already done so. If any families are aware that their children, other than the current year 6 students, will not be attending Brentwood Park Primary School next year, could you please notify the office or your child’s classroom teacher. S tudent Safety First Parents are once again reminded of the importance of placing student safety higher than any perceived inconvenience when dropping off children at the commencement of the school day or collecting children once school has been dismissed. Parents are not allowed to drive cars into the school car park unless authorised by the principal. The eight bays outside the front of the school are also designated as NO STANDING 8:00 a.m.—9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.— 4:00 p.m. on school days. Their correct use enables the safe “dropping off” and “collecting” of children. When parents choose to park their cars in these designated NO STANDING bays, other parents then make the inappropriate choice to double park alongside them. This is fraught with danger and can incur an infringement notice when parking inspectors are present. This week, parking infringement officers were present outside Brentwood Park Primary School and Kambrya College and they will not hesitate to issue monetary fines to drivers displaying unlawful driving behaviours! functions for the 2017 school year, it is imperative that we are able to ascertain student numbers for next year. The more accurate with our future planning, the smoother we can make the transition for the children from one year level to the next. Thank you for your cooperation. Your assistance is greatly appreciated!

S tudent Safety First Parents are once again reminded of the importance of placing student safety higher than any perceived

C hinese Language and Culture This term, the students will be learning words and phrases

associated with animals and the body. Additionally, the children will be encouraged to use Shadow Puppetry to demonstrate an application of their oral skills in these areas: Introducing themselves, (review and

application of previous learning) Introducing their friends, (review and

application of previous learning) Their likes and dislikes in colours,

animals, (review and application of previous learning)

Body part names (application of new learning this term)

Children will work on their shadow puppet show in their second class session, however, parents are encouraged to get involved! Here are some useful links. Ideally, we are hopeful that the children will produce some mini movies of their learning by the end of this term. Here are some useful videos relating to shadow puppet making. If children want to know more, I recommend children watch some shows performed by Richard Bradshaw who is a great master of shadow puppetry! Here are some links from Youtube. S cience Week Event This week, Brentwood Park Primary School is

celebrating Science Week, inclusive of a whole school excursion titled “Beyond the Sky”. Over Wednesday and Thursday, STARLAB VICTORIA was at our school with the huge Cosmodome and Starlab planetariums to share the world beyond with us!

Over the two days, the students participated in a 50 minute presentation learning about the world beyond what they can see. They explored how night and day occurs, the constellations and their stories, the planets in the solar system and the powerful sun.

Following their visit to the Cosmodome on Wednesday, the Year 2 classes were greeted with their own solar system displays upon entering their classrooms on Thursday morning!

Year 2DK were grateful of the parent assistance offered to inflate their sun in order to complete their display!!

With the type of weather that Victoria has been experiencing lately, now's a great time to learn how to apply First Aid to those exposed to extreme heat and cold. Exposure to Heat Heat-Induced Conditions Heat cramps - Result from

losing too much water and salt through sweating causing painful muscle cramps, usually in the legs and abdomen.

Heat exhaustion - Results from being physically

active in a hot environment without taking the right precautions.

Heat stroke – A potentially life threatening condition. Water levels in the body become so low that sweating stops and body temperature rises because the body can no longer cool itself.

Tip: When moving to a hot climate, a person's daily intake of water needs to increase. Body salts may also be depleted, so extra salt may be needed in food. If water is replaced, but not body salts, the concentration of salt will be too low, impairing normal functioning. Exposure to Cold Cold-Induced Conditions To conserve body heat, blood vessels in the skin shut down to prevent the body’s core heat escaping. The body loses heat by radiation especially from the head, evaporation, breathing, conduction and convection. Hypothermia - Occurs

when the body's warming mechanisms fail, or are overwhelmed, and the body temperature drops below 35°C.

Frostbite - Occurs when the skin and underlying tissues become frozen as a result of exposure to below zero temperatures. It is a progressive injury and can sometimes freeze the bone.

Cryogenic Burn - Occurs when the skin touches and sticks to an extremely cold surface such as metal or ice, or if it comes into contact with liquefied gases. Wearing gloves can prevent this.

B rentwood Park’s Annual Mini Fete! Once again, as part of economics teaching, the grade 5 and 6 students are holding their annual

mini fete! The date is set for Wednesday 19th October! Students have busy on their individual stalls and are still accepting offers of sponsorship to boost their $30 budget. Some grade 5 students are going to hold a Trash and Treasure stall and it would be appreciated that if you have any items at home which you no longer require, and believe they could be of value to another, to please donate them to 5LF/5SM in room 11a/11b.

Also, if any member of our school community is in a position to sponsor or donate items that can be used as a prize or raffled off, we would appreciate your support. Grade 5 Teachers and Students

D iwali Festival Brentwood Park Primary is proud of it multicultural diversity and has many students of

Indian cultural background. On the 30 October, these families we will be celebrating Diwali. What is Diwali? Diwali is a five day Hindu festival during October or November. The word Diwali means "rows of lighted lamps" and the celebration is often referred to as the Festival of Lights because of the common practice of lighting small oil lamps (called diyas) and placing them around the home, courtyards, gardens, roof-tops and outer walls. The festival of Diwali is often celebrated with huge firework displays and the exchange of sweets. The festival signifies the triumph of light over darkness, so join in the fun by lighting some candles and cooking up some delicious Indian-style dishes. In the midst of today's busy lifestyle, Diwali gives an opportunity to pause and be grateful for what we have, to make special memories with family and friends, to laugh and enjoy what life offers us.

C anteen News The canteen is currently out of liquorice. Apologies.

P LEASE DIRECT MONEY FOR EXCURSIONS, ETC TO YOUR CLASSROOM TEACHER - NOT TO THE OFFICE. Please hand money and permission slip in sealed envelopes to classroom teacher first thing in the morning. By following this process teachers are aware that your child will be attending the excursion and mark them

off their lists. Money is collected by office staff and processed each morning and a receipt given back to teachers along with permission slips. All money is tallied and banked daily – no money is left on the premises. If you wish to pay by credit card, a proforma is available from the office. This can be filled out with details and placed in a sealed envelope and handed to your classroom teacher

Please deliver cash in a sealed envelope with your child’s name and grade on the front by 9.30 a.m. If you have a number of children attending an excursion you can place all money and permission slips in the one envelope with children’s names and grades on the front and deliver to one of the children’s teachers. The office staff will be able to allocate money to the children’s particular items and distribute permission slips and receipts back to teachers. Enve-lopes are available at the office. If you have a large amount to be paid or need to process an EFTPOS transaction through a savings account you can make arrangements to pay at the office. We also have a new Qkr payment system on our Skoolbag app. If you download our Skoolbag app and Qkr payment app you can now pay for your child’s excursion on line.

All change will be delivered to the children in the afternoon. Re-imbursements will only be made under certain circumstances – they will be made by cheque (no cash transactions are made).

Notices are sent out with a final collection time – please adhere to this time. All money and permission slips are re-quired to be sent back by this date – otherwise your child will not be able to attend. This enables us to confirm book-ings and numbers with bus companies and organisations we are visiting. Also we need to send details to the Depart-ment of Education Emergency Management for all excursions, camps, etc. We also need to accommodate students who will not be attending.

We would appreciate it if parents could please follow these processes.
