BUSINESS STUDIES - CANTEEN CARNIVAL Yes, it is that time of the year again for Canteen Carnival. Our year 11 Business Studies students, putting to the test their planning, organising skills, culinary skills, promoting their product, and selling their products.

The variety of food items ranged from butter chicken to chips to sweet items like candy floss.

This year there were eleven business groups. It didn’t appear that the weather was not going to be very cooperative, so a quick decision just before lunch was made to have it in the hall. Some stalls sold out in seven minutes, and students applied the balance of the 4 P’s (price, product, place and promotion) in running a business.

This was an opportunity to showcase our “creative, energetic, and enterprising” young people, who will contribute to New Zealand’s economic future.

In business studies, students develop their understanding of busi-ness theory and practices in a range of relevant contexts, through experiential as well as theoretical approaches to learning. Canteen Carnival is a platform for market day, it creates oppor-tunities for students to:

gain such qualities as initiative, resilience, and resourcefulness and the skills of problem solving, co-operation, decision making, negotiation, and communicating

gain knowledge and understanding of good business practice and of business as a productive activity

acquire greater financial capability

become more knowledgeable consumers and better able to manage personal or household finances as a result of their learning in business studies.

The skills students learn in business studies are transferable to learning in many other areas, and to real life.

A minimum of 40% of their profits went towards CANTEEN, though one group chose to donate 100% of their profits.

A big thank you to Mrs Cook, and all staff and students who supported these students and their business.

BOARD MEETING DATES 2017

(5.30pm in the College Boardroom)

Tuesday 21 February Tuesday 22 August

Tuesday 23 May Monday 13 November

This year’s NCEA External Examinations start on Thursday 9th November and end on Friday 1st December. You can find the exam timetable included in this newsletter and also at the bottom of the NZQA homepage -www.nzqa.govt.nz.

Admission Slips Early next term, students in Years 11, 12 and 13 will receive a photocopy of their personalised Admission Slip setting out the dates and times of their exams. Students will be handed their original Admission Slip when they attend their first exam. Students should take great care of their Admission Slip as they won’t be allowed into exams without it.

What do you do if miss an exam because of illness, bereavement or some other unforeseen circumstances? Under certain circumstances you can apply for a Derived Grade. A Derived Grade is based on evidence, such as your Practice Exam results, and is awarded by NZQA for the standards you missed. You must complete a form and provided appropriate evidence by 12 noon on Friday 8th December. For example, if you miss an exam because you are unwell you must get a medical certificate stating that you were too sick to sit the exam and the dates of your illness. You can also apply for a derived grade if you believe your performance was affected because you were ill. Again, you will need to provide a medical certificate. For more information contact Mr Ditchburn.

NCEA Results NZQA do not automatically post out Results Notices as most people now view their results online. If you would like to receive a paper copy of your Results Notice you must login to the NZQA website and order one before the end of December.

NZQA Fees The deadline to pay NZQA fees to the school was 11th August. However, it is still not too late to pay this year’s fees. You can either collect a School Candidate Payment Form from the school and post your payment to NZQA or log into the NZQA website and pay online. The deadline for the payment of fees to NZQA is 1st December. Payments made after the 1st December will incur a $50.00 late payment fee. If the fees are not paid students can still complete assessments, including exams, and their results will still be recorded.

However, they will not be awarded any qualifications they have earned, e.g. NCEA Level 1 or University Entrance, and they will not receive their Record of Achievement (RoA) or any certifi-cates. Once any outstanding fees are paid the student will be awarded their qualifications and can order their RoA and certifi-cates.

PPPPP - Revision is the Key Proper Preparation Prevents Poor Performance. In order for students to do their very best in the external exams they need to be properly prepared. If they haven’t already started revis-ing, now is the time. They should get online and Google ‘revision techniques’ and find out what works for them. There are certain things that don’t work for anyone: last minute cram-ming the day before; mindlessly reading through notes; record-ing notes and playing them back whilst asleep. Good revision is active and involves taking the information to be learned and processing it in some way, e.g. turning written notes into pic-tures or diagrams. A good place to start is the exam timetable. Find out when your exams are and then devise a revision time-table. Remember to build in rest breaks and time for physical activities like sport. You also need to look after your body; living on junk food and revising into the wee small hours isn’t good for your brain. Eat well, sleep well and revise well and you should be properly prepared. And get off those screens at least an hour before you want to go to sleep. The blue light generated by screens on phones, tablets, laptops and TVs fools the brain into thinking it’s still daytime and affects your ability to get a good night’s sleep.

Keeping Up To Date with NCEA Results Students should be keeping up-to-date with their results, both on MUSAC Edge and on the NZQA website. All senior students have received a card with their National Student Number (NSN) and login instructions. Once they have registered they will be able to view their results and order documents such as certifi-cates and their Record of Achievement. Please note that schools are only required to send results into NZQA at the start of each month so there is often a delay between results appearing on Edge and appearing on the NZQA website.

13PE TRAMP

In September, the 13PE students went on the annual tramping trip with Miss Wilson, Mr Ditchburn, and Mr Jackson. We started at Waitawheta at the northern end of the Kaimai Ranges, and followed the river for 10kms along the tramway walk to the hut.

Upon arriving at the hut, we helped out the resident doc ranger with his saw mill restoration project. Many hands make light work and our strong party of 30 had soon made a significant contribution; lifting large logs to form the sleds for the mill, and clearing fallen trees. We topped up the shed with firewood, then a few students braved the fresh spring water and went for a swim in the river. Dinner consisted of scotch fillet steak, mashed potatoes, spaghetti bolognese, and a semi frozen tub of ice cream. Rhys and Max managed to set up the mountain radio and we heard a positive forecast for Friday. Card games, glow worms and star gazing were the entertainment for the night, as well as the persistent possum who narrowly escaped our substandard hunters.

We started day two with a sunny blue sky and an uphill slog. Cameron’s dad jokes and Leanni’s relentlessly positive attitude kept every-one moving and we stopped for lunch on the track to regroup. Then it was time for the trip up Te Aroha mountain. Fog had reduced visibility to the point where we questioned whether the extra one hour walk would be worth the detour. The majority of students decided they needed to give it a go and we boosted up to the top in 25 minutes. But unfortunately…no view to be seen at all. A few harsh words towards Miss Wilson and Mr Jackson had to be apologised for when all of a sudden…the view appeared! The fog cleared in short bursts and we could see 360 degree views into the distance. A two hour walk in the bush down to the bus completed the eight hour day and we headed back to school feeling very proud of ourselves. A special mention to Max for encouraging the class and Miss Wilson to ditch the safe option and choose the challenging track. Best 13PE trip to date!

INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS Waiuku College is sad to say goodbye to three of our international students who ended their learning journeys at Waiuku College at the end of September.

They are Nano and Yae from Japan, and Lena from Germany. Nano is one of our longer staying students who has proved it is possible to achieve, adapt and integrate despite having little prior experience studying overseas.

“It was a good decision that I chose to come back after my two-week short stay here at WC. Everything that I experienced here is some-

thing I will never forget.” - Nano

TOURNAMENT WEEK

The first week of September saw 7 teams travel to different parts Of NZ to compete in the Annual Winter Sports Tourna-ments.

Girls’ Hockey went to Tauranga and competed in the Eveline Hankers tournament, they were placed 11th out of 16 teams after a week of intense games. Lots of injuries but a great team effort. Special thanks to coach Ms Bernadette Corcoran, manag-er Ms Shannon Baxter and mother helpers Kara Thornton and Teresa Kyd.

Girls’ Football travelled to the Maurice Hulme Tournament in Rotorua. With a small squad of 14 girls, they fought bravely and won there first 3 days of games, to fight towards a semi final position, which they won. Thursday saw them lose a player to injury, leaving them with the bare 13 girls. They fought hard in their semi final narrowly losing 1-0. They finished the week with 4th place out of 32 teams which was a valliant effort. Many thanks to coach Desiree Rickard, asst coach Jahna Stephens and manager Kelli Toner Manager, and the many parents and care-givers who travelled daily to support them. As we only lose 1 girl out of this team for 2017, 2018 will be a exciting year for them.

I was lucky to go and support both the girls Hockey and Football

and saw some wonderful talent out on the field and turf and I’m

so proud of them all.

Netball Gold travelled to Auckland netball Courts for the Upper North Island Netball Comp. Here we see over 140 teams from all over the Upper North Island competing for the top spot. Gold had some good wins and a few losses by 1 or 2 goals, and they gave there all for their team on the court. Special thanks to coach Rachel Browne-Cole, manager Browyn Sloane and scorer Graeme Muir Scorer for all they have done for the girls this year and on tournament.

Basketball Senior Boys and Girls and Junior Boys had their tour-nament at Bruce Pullman Park in Papakura.

Junior Boys had 4 intense days of basketball, and they ended there comp in 3rd place which is a huge effort from such a young side. We look forward to seeing how this team progresses in the years to come; they all have such exciting flair and bring a lot to the game. Special thanks to coach Michael Harper and manager Di Bradley for being with them all year and making them such a competitive and successful team.

Senior Boys and Girls ended there tournament both in 3rd place. Thanks to Daniel Arthur-Worsop and Anita Manning for the boys team, and Mr Ricky Minhinnick, Lauren Nijenhuis and Shelley Thompson for all the time and effort they put into out students.

We are so proud of all these teams and there dedication they have shown towards Waiuku College Sport, and look forward to them all returning next year .
