Whole School NewsGlorifying GodI have been sharing throughout this term’s newsletter regarding a set of ‘peace-making’ principles developed by an Australian organisation called Peacewise (peacewise.org.au). Last fortnight, I presented the first of these principles (‘seeing conflict as an opportunity’) and in this newsletter I’d like us to consider ‘glorifying God’.

Principle #2: Glorifying God. This seems an obvious principle. Aren’t we meant to glorify God in everything we do? Absolutely! The writer in the Bible called Paul wrote this to his friends in a young church at a place called Colossae:

And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

So what does it mean to actually ‘glorify God’? John Piper, a teacher, preacher and author, describes it this way:

Glorifying God means feeling and thinking and acting in ways that reflect His greatness, that make much of God, that give evidence of His supreme greatness.

Wow! I don’t know about you, but when I hit trouble or conflict, this is not my first reaction. I am not naturally inclined to ‘feel and think and act in ways that reflect God’. I am more likely to react based on my own self-interest. I want to protect my patch, have my voice heard and get my way!

We can glorify God in the midst of trouble and conflict by trusting him, obeying and imitating him (see Proverbs 3:4-6; John 14:15; Ephesians 5:1).

I can trust God as I don’t become anxious to have to get my part of the conflict ‘right’. I don’t have to think that I need to say the right words, or get the timing just right, or provide a perfect explanation of how things got to where they are. While I do need to take responsibility for how I speak and behave with others in times of conflict, I can trust God to work things out and bring restoration.

I can obey God as I follow the number of commands He gives me when dealing with others. Some of those commands include loving them (see Mark 12:32); praying for them (see Matthew 5:44); and thinking of them better than myself (see Philippians 2:3).

Finally, I imitate God as I seek to be slow to get angry (see Psalm 103:8) and quick to forgive (see Ephesians 4:32). Simon Matthews, Executive Principal

Sibling EnrolmentsIf you have younger children that you would like to enrol to commence at Chairo in 2018, 2019 or 2020—whether for K3 or K4 Kinder, Prep or other year levels—please contact Tina Lewis on 5625 4600 (Drouin East, Drouin and Traralgon), Elise Groenewaldt on 5942 5632 (Pakenham), Wendy Nyhuis on 5662 4355 (Leongatha) or email your enquiry to [email protected].

It is important that families do this as soon as possible so we can reserve a place for you before offering places to new families.

OHS Induction for VolunteersWe are very thankful for the rapidly increasing number of parents who have completed the volunteer application process relating to child safety at Chairo.

We also have an obligation to provide training in OHS requirements and have included this as part of our updated volunteer application forms. If you completed the volunteer application process before we did this, please complete this extra process by the end of June.

Completing the Online OHS Induction for Volunteers and Visitors

• Go to onlineinduction.com/chairo/ or you can access the Online Safety Induction via the Chairo website. When on the website, click on Community News, then select Online Inductions from the drop down box. When on the Online Inductions page, click on the Online Safety Induction link.

• When on the Online Induction page, click on ‘First time here? Click to register’. Do not attempt to use a username or password at this stage.

• Select Volunteer & Visitor Safety Induction from the alternatives, then click on Register.

• Enter your registration details. Use a Chairo email if you have one or your own email address if you don’t. The email address you have entered becomes your username if logging on in the future. Please record the password you have entered so you can login again if you don’t get through the induction the first time.

• Continue through all the online induction steps and complete the quiz at the end.

• When you have completed this, print the certificate of completion and pass to Reception at the most relevant campus.

November Student Free DayPlease note that there will be a Report Writing Day (i.e. no school for students) at all campuses on Monday 27 November.

While that is still a long way off, families may wish to note the date now as the Report Writing Day was originally scheduled to occur a week earlier on Monday 20 November. The date shown on the calendar fridge magnets that many families will have at home is therefore not accurate.

Campus NewsCampus AssemblyOur next whole campus assembly will be held on Monday 29 May at 9.10 am in Pioneers Hall. This time, our assembly will be hosted by Miss I’Anson’s Year 1/2 class. We love to see parents, grandparents and friends coming along to share this time with us. As an added incentive, P&F invites you to share coffee, cake and community in the foyer before and/or after assembly.

Fundraising UpdatesCrazy Hair DayA big thank you to all those families who went ‘all out’ for Crazy Hair Day at the end of Term 1. There were so many amazing creations! With all your gold coins, we were able to send $172 to the Leukaemia Foundation.

Syrian Refugee Sausage SizzleDuring Service Day activities, a number of our secondary students manned a sausage sizzle in front of IGA. Despite a quiet day in town, we were able to send $170 to TEAR Australia to support those affected by the Syrian Crisis.

When Your Child is AbsentJust a reminder that if a student is absent from school, a parent/guardian is required to contact the school (preferably by 9.15 am on the day of absence). You are also asked to provide a written note of explanation to the appropriate classroom or homeroom teacher, or to Reception, upon the student’s return to school. Thank you for your assistance in ensuring our records are compliant with policy and legislation.

Peter Pan UpdateFor StudentsAll students involved in production have had their names added to the ‘Linc – Peter Pan’ page. Check out the page for a list of characters involved in each scene, and for a rehearsal calendar that lists all rehearsal dates with the scene number scheduled for rehearsal on that day.

There is also a ‘chat’ component that allows cast members to engage in an online discussion.

For ParentsThank you to all those parents who have started collecting items for the costume cupboard! It has been wonderful to see such an enthusiastic response from the school community.

As things begin to pile up, we request that you please contact Trudi Prue or Christine Hibma before purchasing any items. We just want to make sure we don’t double up and that all pieces fit together well. An email or text message with a photo would be greatly appreciated.Christine Hibma, Production Director
