Volume 22 Issue 11 Thursday 28 April 2016 A NZAC Commemorative Service Last Friday 22 April, we held our school’s annual ANZAC Commemorative Service. With the school and house captains not present due to their attendance at the Year 6 excursion, the service was conducted by representatives of the Student Council for Years 4 and 5. They carried out the service admirably, with each having a significant role to undertake. Gabrielle and Lydia spoke about the significance of the day and the sacrifices made to provide us with the freedom and Australian lifestyle which we enjoy today. Chanelle read the Prayer of Remembrance and following the laying of a wreath on behalf of staff, students and parents of Brentwood Park Primary School, by Aarraniyan and Janukilay, Shameera recited the ANZAC Ode. The Last Post was played, followed by an observance of silence by all assembled. The flag was raised by Bryan and Abhi during the playing of Reveille and upon it reaching full mast position, all assembled spoke the words LEST WE FORGET. The children then listened to the choir as they sang the song “Lest We Forget” and in conclusion, we sang the National Anthem. Our technicians for the service were Luke and Julian. The respect the children demonstrated throughout the service was highly commendable and as teachers, parents and a community, we can be justifiably proud! On ANZAC Day itself, three of our school captains, Caitlyn F, Will S and Ricky P along with other student representatives also attended the ANZAC Commemorative Service in Berwick, in the official capacity as representatives of our school. Given the number of floral tributes, our wreath, from the Brentwood Park Primary School Community, was laid at the cenotaph prior to the march commencing, however, we were acknowledged with our name being called along with the other schools and organisations who also had laid wreaths in memory of the ANZACS. www.brentwoodparkps.vic.edu.au TERM DATES 2016 TERM 1 28 JAN. - 24 MARCH TERM 2 11 APRIL - 24 JUNE TERM 3 11 JULY - 16 SEPT. DATES TO REMEMBER

2017 FOUNDATION ENROLMENTS ARE NOW AVAILABLE FROM THE OFFICE.

C urriculum Highlights Through our weekly newsletter, we aim to provide insight into our weekly school life by

highlighting our programs/excursions/special events etc. This week, we feature our school’s ANZAC Commemorative Ceremony and participation in the Berwick ANZAC Day march, the District Cross Country Run and continue with published articles in relation to the experience morning for Year 6 at Kambrya College as part of the Year 6 transition program and the Year 6 excursion to the Shrine of Remembrance and Melbourne Museum.

A Trip to the Melbourne Museum On Tuesday, 12th April, grade 6 students visited

The Melbourne Museum and The Shrine of Remembrance because we are studying government and historical Australian events since 1901 including WW1. One important exhibition was called Love and Sorrow. It featured stories of WW1 soldiers and their families. Of the survivors who returned from war, their lives were changed forever. I looked at over 300 objects and photographs which all told a story of love and sorrow. I thought the exhibitions in the Museum were awesome, including the human body, insects and dinosaurs. There was plenty of history to be seen. Daemon Mc 5/6TS

A Day as a Nurse More than 2000

Australian nurses served with the Australian Army Nursing Service during the First World War between 1914 and 1918. About 29 nurses died on active service. On the 12th of April, I visited The Shrine of Remembrance. During an educational lesson at The Shrine, I dressed as a nurse who would have served in the war. I wore a white apron, a red cape and a

cloth on my head. The capes were made of wool during the cold winters; at other times, some were made of red silk. The apron was a bit big for me but I was fine. On the cape was a badge with the words: Australian Commonwealth Military Force. I held a bag with the Red Cross symbol. The nurses had to work with the injured, the sick and the dead. I enjoyed our visit and found it very educational. Grace M 5/6TS

A n Awesome Day at Kambrya College On Friday, 15th of April, year 6 students visited

Kambrya to experience and prepare for high school. We were separated into three groups and did three different activities. Wood Technology was first for me. Using wood, we made a pencil case; it was brilliant. The second activity was science. I personally love science because we conduct experiments. We used different types of powders and heat. Each powder was placed on a stick and placed over a flame causing the flame to change colour depending on the type of powder. We also looked through a microscope at little creatures and animals’ hair. Finally, we connected wires in a circular shape to make the bulb light up. Our final activity was P.E. I was stunned when I entered the gym because it was so massive. Finally, all students from Brentwood Park and Berwick Fields primary schools met in the auditorium. Some of the Kambrya leaders spoke to us about high school and answered our questions. I found it helpful and I learned a lot. I can’t wait until next year! Yuvarnika 5/6TS

A Transition Experience Day Year 6 classes visited Kambrya College for our

Transition Experience Day. We did three activities; Wood Technology, science and sport. At Wood Technology, we made pencil cases using wood, nails, hammers and glue. Each piece of wood was glued and nailed together. The lid slid open and closed. In science we used different kinds of powder and put it close to a flame to make different colours. Then we looked through a microscope and made light using pegs and wire. At sport we played different games including Octopus, Fruit Salad and Golden Child. Maddy 5/6 TS

M y Day at Kambrya College Kambrya was brilliant! The activities were fun!

One class I went to was the kitchen class with Ms Reynolds. We made CHOCOLATE TRUFFLES! Mine didn’t turn out so well. We had much fun cooking and even more fun in Drama with Mr Denim. We were given two cards; one was the story line and the other was the setting. Our setting was in an army tank and our storyline was going to the dentist. Then we all joined together for a P.E. class. I can’t wait to be in high school! Shreya 5/6TS

E dwin Flack District Cross Country Last week, our school had 59 students competing at district level in cross country. With

very mild conditions, the course was very fast. The students from our school ran exceptionally well against fierce competition. There were a total of 80 competitors per race and many Brentwood Park students finished in the top 30 which was an excellent result. I am very proud of all of our competitors who gave their very best effort. Congratulations to Asher 4th and Jack 9th in the 12 year old category. Maginga 2nd, Ty 4th and Max 5th in the 11 year old category. Wyatt 5th, Jessie 3rd and Emily 8th in the 10 year old category. We wish them well at divisional level next month. A huge thank you to the parents who assisted with the day, your help is greatly appreciated.

A collage of the event is provided in this week’s newsletter!

I nter School Sport Interschool sport begins on the 6th of May with our first game being away against Berwick Lodge.

Notices need to be returned as soon as possible. Can you please ensure uniforms are being washed after each game and returned at the end of the season. Jim Narayan, Health and Physical Education

A ustralian Girls’ Choir On Tuesday the 26th April, Australian Girls’ Choir conducted a workshop for girls from

Foundation to Year 4 whose parents had granted permission. In all, nineteen girls attended the workshop which was conducted by Hannah from the choir. The workshop consisted of some singing, rhythmic and movement activities. During the workshop, Hannah took notes on each of the girls which will be the basis of a hand written report which will then be sent home to parents. The report will give the parents feedback on the girls, and all of the girls will then be invited to attend an open class. The girls enjoyed the workshop and are looking forward to receiving the feedback report.

U nauthorised Parking and Use of Facilities As mentioned last week, representatives of the Maternal Care Centre and the Brentwood Park

Kindergarten contacted the school to inform us that a Work Safe Order had been imposed upon them due to unsafe practices related to cars entering and leaving their car park! A work safe officer had observed parents from Brentwood Park Primary using their car park and observed a near miss of a child being hit by a car. Please do not park in the Maternal Care Centre/Kindergarten Car Park or use their facility to

drop off children prior to school. The first five parking bays outside our front gate are designated for this purpose. This week, a police presence was noticed so please ensure practices are lawful! Infringement notices have been issued in the past!

P LEASE DIRECT MONEY FOR EXCURSIONS, ETC TO YOUR CLASSROOM TEACHER - NOT TO THE OFFICE. Please hand money and permission slip in sealed envelopes to classroom teacher first thing in the morning. By following this process teachers are aware that your child will be attending the excursion and mark them

off their lists. Money is collected by office staff and processed each morning and a receipt given back to teachers along with permission slips. All money is tallied and banked daily – no money is left on the premises. If you wish to pay by credit card, a proforma is available from the office. This can be filled out with details and placed in a sealed envelope and handed to your classroom teacher

Please deliver cash in a sealed envelope with your child’s name and grade on the front by 9.30 a.m. If you have a number of children attending an excursion you can place all money and permission slips in the one envelope with children’s names and grades on the front and deliver to one of the children’s teachers. The office staff will be able to allocate money to the children’s particular items and distribute permission slips and receipts back to teachers. Enve-lopes are available at the office. If you have a large amount to be paid or need to process an EFTPOS transaction through a savings account you can make arrangements to pay at the office. We also have a new Qkr payment system on our Skoolbag app. If you download our Skoolbag app and Qkr payment app you can now pay for your child’s excursion on line.

All change will be delivered to the children in the afternoon. Re-imbursements will only be made under certain circumstances – they will be made by cheque (no cash transactions are made).

Notices are sent out with a final collection time – please adhere to this time. All money and permission slips are re-quired to be sent back by this date – otherwise your child will not be able to attend. This enables us to confirm book-ings and numbers with bus companies and organisations we are visiting. Also we need to send details to the Depart-ment of Education Emergency Management for all excursions, camps, etc. We also need to accommodate students who will not be attending.

We would appreciate it if parents could please follow these processes.
