Library News

Scholastic book club Thank you to all community members who purchased from Scholastic book club this year. Your purchases earnt the school just over $3000 in rewards, which is amazing! This money is being used to purchase library resources for the whole school to enjoy. Thank you! For all purchases made from issue 8, the items are in transit and on their way. As soon as they have arrived they will be delivered to the student’s classroom or you will be notified of gift orders ready for collection from the school office. Returns With only a week left of school, all library and reading books are now due to be returned. Please check in with your child to see if they have anything outstanding and return all books to the library by Thursday. As this is the time that we stock take and sort out all resources there is no borrowing over the holidays. For all holiday borrowing I strongly recommend becoming a member of your local library. It is free to become a member, for more details visit: https://www.stirling.wa.gov.au/leisure-and-culture/libraries-and-hubs - City of Stirling https://www.bayswater.wa.gov.au/arts-and-leisure/libraries - City of Bayswater Scribblers Festival 2021 Scribblers Festival are running a fabulous writing competition “The Golden Pen”, open to students in Years 4-12. 2020 Mount Lawley Primary School Spelling Bee

On Wednesday 18 November, selected students participated in the 2020 Mount Lawley Primary School Spelling Bee. Students worked hard to study and learn a variety of tricky words before the big day. Their courage to get up in front of an audience and spell these difficult words is to be commended. We congratulate the following students on being the winners for this year’s competition, and look forward to having their names put on the Spelling Bee plaque in the front office:

Year 4: Ava Morris Year 5: Claire Wang Year 6: Sara Aitwade

School Board

The final Board meeting for 2020 was opened at 5.30pm on Thursday 3 December 2020. Only one member was absent and there were no observers. The meeting was very full with lots of decisions being made. Firstly, Albert Tassone stood down as Board Chair. An election was held and Derek Watt was unanimously elected as the MLPS Board Chair for 2021. Cara Davis was re-elected as the Board Secretary. Ms Monck thanked Albert for all his hard work and welcomed Derek to his new role. Secondly, the 2021 Term dates were presented to the Board for endorsement. After a short discussion the dates were endorsed by all members. Finally, Ms Monck informed the Board that the Delivery and Performance Agreement (DPA) will be replaced with a new document next year called, “The Agreement”. This document is the agreement between the Director General, the Principal and Board Chair of an Independent Public School. It states the expectations and mutual responsibilities of the central office, the school and the Board in relation to the governance and autonomy of the school. Elections in 2021 In February of 2021, nominations will be called for two parent representatives for a three-year term for our School Board. Keep an eye out for the Connect notice that will call for nominations from parents of our school (K-6), where nominees are asked to write a 100 word bio which will go on to the school website to inform parents as to who they might like to elect. Thank a Staff Member! There are several ways you can complete a “Thank a Staff Member” card. There will be flyers pasted up around the school with all the following options:

1. There are cards in the front office that you or your child can fill in 2. Email the Board at [email protected] and a card can be completed for you 3. Complete an online form by following the link

https://forms.office.com/Pages/ResponsePage.aspx?id=DQSIkWdsW0yxEjajBLZtrQAAAAAAAAAAAAO__RkWMvNUMjYwRTg2Q1ZUQVMwQ0VBWEJLUjY4NFpVTy4u

4. Complete an online form by scanning the QR code. It would be fantastic for staff to receive this acknowledgment of their dedication and commitment to our children. The first Board Meeting for 2021 will be held at 5.30pm on Thursday 25 February 2021. It would be great to see you there. ~Cara Davis, Board Secretary

School Chess Championship 2020

Congratulations to all Chess Club members who competed in the MLPS School Chess Championship on Monday 16 November, a total of 30 children took part in seven rounds of hotly contested matches. This was an outstanding School Championship.

Chess encourages and develops problem solving, forward planning, resilience, time-management and dealing with winning and losing. Every player demonstrated good chess etiquette and sportsmanship which is the hallmark of Mount Lawley PS Chess Club. The tournament winner and School Champion for 2020 is Jack Ryder (Year 6) but it was not an easy journey. At the end of seven rounds of competition 3 players, Minh Pham, Zaid Qureshi and Jack were tied in 1st Place on 6 wins each! In an exciting, 3-way Lightning playoff, Jack ended up with the honours A group of Year 1 players were invited to play and they acquitted themselves very well. It might be the influence of the hit TV series “The Queen’s Gambit” but it was heartening to see was the presence of many female players represented this year. We hope to see this trend continue for years to come.

Volunteers Needed - 2021 Nature Play Busy Bee

Works on the new Nature Playground will commence in the next few weeks. The P&C have approved funding for the next stage of the Nature Playground at MLPS. The work is being coordinated by the Education Department and Programmed who will complete most of the site and structural works of the playground. Our school community will still have an opportunity to contribute by moving some of the selected sands and mulch into their respective location. There is also some gardening required including the planting of a tree and some shrubs. We are looking for anyone who can volunteer some of their time to assist on either Saturday 23 or Sunday 24 January 2021. We would like both general labourers to help move soil, mulch and other general duties and also some gardeners to complete the landscaping. We have created an easy Signup Genius form for you to express your interest on either or both days. The timings are open at the moment but as we move closer to the date we will look to lock in your actual availability on each of the days. Please help us prepare for this Busy Bee by expressing your interest to help today! If you know another parent who might like to join you on the day please share the link below with them also.

For 2021, we are looking for a new committee chair and new members. The committee chair role involves coordinating a volunteer team of around 10 committee members to deliver events such as the Progressive Dinner, Colour Run, Quiz Nights, Sausage Sizzles, etc. If you would like to find out more information about the role or committee membership, please contact Georgina Hurst on 0423 665 176 or email at [email protected].
