One day, all day, on the 15th March, BA ISAGO students were treated to a health and wellness day aptly themed “academics and fitness for a sound mind.”

The events kick-started with a sponsored walk and continued all day with a whole range of activities. Track and field sporting activities included athletics, netball, volleyball, 5-a-side football, tug-of-war,

egg race and sack race. After getting their hearts raising, students could go for counselling sessions and screening services for various non-communicable diseases such as diabetes, high blood pressure and HIV/AIDS. KNOWLEDGE EMPOWERS PROGRESS

BA ISAGO University on the 10th April held a public lecture for their students and staff members. The aim of the lecture, organized through the United States Embassy and BA ISAGO Student Welfare and Support Services, was to furnish the audience with tools and skills to use in marketing and research related issues.

Professor Taylor presented on Building Brands; Best Practices in International Market Research and How to publish in international journals. The Professor highlighted that with the growing trend of digital marketing one needs to be careful of what they put on such advertisements as well as how marketers should present their adverts to attract and retain customers’ attention. Professor Taylor also touched on the importance of CSR for an organization and alluded to the fact that most people

relate better or would like to be associated with organizations that practice CSR and advised that using such information of CSR projects and sponsorship in an advertisement helps in marketing an organization and its products/services.

He also mentioned that marketers should learn to customize their messages and conduct interactive polls and entertaining messages which stay in the customers for better brand resonance and positioning. He concluded by encouraging the audience, comprising students, faculty and staff, to dream big and work very hard to achieve those dreams as he is also where he is due to hard work. BA ISAGO Managing Director, Mr Gabasiane wrapped up the seminar with a vote of thanks and promised that the University will host more of similar forums especially for the students.

BA ISAGO UNIVERSITY HOSTS A PUBLIC LECTURE BY PROFESSOR CHARLES TAYLOR FROM VILLANOVA UNIVERSITY OF BUSINESS (USA).

Yet another milestone was realised by BA ISAGO University on 14th March 2018, when Faculty of Education and Faculty of The Built Environment, Arts and Science appointed members and launched their respective Advisory Boards.

The Advisory Boards are formed in recognition of the compelling need to forge a closer link between the University and Industry/Commerce/NGOs by giving business, industry and other professionals the opportunity to provide external advice on existing and new programmes under the stewardship of the Faculty. This collaboration is especially relevant in an environment where there appears to be a mismatch between tertiary education graduates and the needs of industry and the emphasis placed by HRDC and DTEF to fund programmes based

on “demand” and not “supply”.

The Advisory Board’s major task is to ensure that graduates from the respective faculty meet the industry needs and all academic members of staff are fully acquainted with new labour and market trends. This is accomplished through Advisory Boards’ advice on collaborations with industry and commerce, including curriculum development, suitability of programmes offered to meet industry and establishment of relationships with local business/entities that provide new opportunities to students and Faculty and exploring possibilities of industrial attachments. To keep BA ISAGO programme offering relevant and up-to-date, The Advisory Boards also assists with integration of new technologies, methods, procedures and practices into career programmes

and facilitates other stakeholder engagements in fundraising and research and community partnerships.

The two faculties identified capable professionals who are subject-matter experts to make up the Advisory Boards. The launched members include Mr Lemuel Tobias Kuwengwa, a Director from Stovker Fleetwood Bird and Landscape Architect Mr Letlhogonolo Gaolekwe, for the Faculty of the Built Environment, Arts and Science. The Faculty of Education Advisory Board so far comprises Mr Joel Motlhabane, a Senior Lecturer at Serowe College of Education, Mr Themba, the Head of Department of Social Studies at Tonoto College of Education and Mr Edward Agyei, a Senior Teacher at Gaborone Senior Secondary School. More identified members, are expected to join the Advisory Boards.

KNOWLEDGE EMPOWERS PROGRESS

On 3rd May, BA ISAGO Convention Centre was filled with aspiring young entrepreneurs and the stakeholders that support and encourage entrepreneurship in Botswana to listen to a public lecture held by Professor Evelyn Chiloane-Tsoka on the topic; Decolonising/Transformation Of The Entrepreneurial Mindset In The 21st Century In Botswana - The Next Step After Diamond Industry.

Professor Evelyn G. Chiloane-Tsoka is currently a Professor of Entrepreneurship in the School of Public and Operations Management Sciences at UNISA, for which she also heads the Research and Innovation Portfolio. Currently visiting BA ISAGO, to facilitate formulation of Incubation Hub policies, she obtained her Doctoral degree of Commerce in May, 2009 with the University of Johannesburg. Professor Chiloane-Tsoka has extensive years of experience and her research focus is on Small business and Entrepreneurship. She has published extensively in peer reviewed journals and has presented on both National and International conferences. She co-authored in multi-disciplinary

research with other scholars from other Universities in South Africa.

The event was graced by the presence of Mr. L Paya- Director, Innovation and Support Sector of the Local Enterprise Authority (LEA) and the Managing Director of ICL Botswana, Mr. K Anderson and other dignatories who were welcomed by Dean Faculty of Commerce, Mr. O. Chiwira, who in his speech, showed gratitude and enthusiasm through noting that entrepreneurship is the answer to diversifying the economy after diamonds have carried Botswana for over 50 years.

On completion of his speech, Mr Chiwira opened the floor to the Managing Director of BA ISAGO University, Mr. O. B. Gabasiane who took the audience through his entrepreneurial experience. He better described his passion for entrepreneurship as a “spiritual calling” that could only be felt by him and those that were closest to him. He further portrayed that his entrepreneurial journey help him gain courage, assertiveness and a spirit of persistence.

The foundation that Mr. Gabasiane laid, opened the floor for Prof. Evelyn Chiloane-Tsoka to engage the audience and the stakeholders in the pressing issue of transforming Batswana’s thought about entrepreneurship in curbing poverty, unemployment and inequality. Through entrepreneurship, education and SMMEs are important vehicles for socio-economic transformation to achieve prosperity and equal society. Prof Evelyn continued to highlight that most start-ups in Botswana relatively lack entrepreneurial expertise, therefore it is imperative that tertiary institutions unleash the potential of students entrepreneurs not by offering Entrepreneurship as a course but by tailoring entrepreneurship into every faculty. She concluded her conversation by emphasizing that it is imperative that entrepreneurial transformation is decolonized for industry collaboration through institutions training, government and the industry will mentor.

DECOLONISING/TRANSFORMATION OF THE ENTREPRENEURIAL MINDSET IN THE 21ST CENTURY IN BOTSWANA - THE NEXT STEP AFTER DIAMOND INDUSTRY

The flagship career fair organised by Human Resources Development Council, came and went this year, like all the other years, but what made 2018 different was BA ISAGO’s participation in the annual tertiary roadshow, as 1 of the 16 Top Tertiary Institutions. The 3-week roadshow covered towns and major villages across Botswana, making stops at Hukuntsi, Tsabong, Mabutsane, Jwaneng, Kanye and Lobatse, while simultaneous stops were made in the Central and Northern villages such as Serowe, Letlhakane, Mahalapye, Palapye, Selibe Phikwe,

Bobonong, Francistown, Masunga, Kasane, Maun and Shakawe. It gave BA ISAGO the opportunity to interact with even more prospective students, and present to them the range of programmes we have on offer. The theme, “promoting a seamless partnership in tertiary education” is symbolic, as the tertiary institutions realise that while we are all competitors, we are all players in tertiary education and all play our part in educating and skilling Batswana.
