Don’t forget our fete will take place this Saturday evening. I believe we will all be able to have the best time - amazing rides, lots of yummy food (all in different price ranges), interesting stalls and exciting entertainment which includes Courtney Marshall-Aitken and Jordan Friday singing. They are a magic combination! So generous of them to give up their time for us!!! Our own students will be also a major part of our entertainment. It is going to be fantastic!! Don’t forget if you buy the wrist bands before the fete they are only $30 but they will be $35 on the night. Don’t forget how important it is to follow our COVID plan ensuring that you use the Check in Queensland app and use physical distancing when possible. We will be ensuring enhanced cleaning processes are followed. Thank you to all those who have been involved with organising everything and also once again our staff who have been following through things behind the scenes. It is hugely appreciated.

Our students started their swimming classes this week and it seemed like all of the students are really enjoying the experience. It’s very important for all of the students to attend as it is part of their curriculum and may save their or someone else’s life.

Today we held another of our Pre-Prep transition mornings. On these days the Kindy kids come along and experience a typical morning session in prep. While the children explored daily prep routines, parents attended an information session with Julie Hemmett who is the Senior Speech Pathologist at the Ingham Health Service. She was joined by Jeanette Masters Ingham Health Service’s Child Health Nurse. We are very fortunate to be able to access their expertise. Parents were able to enjoy a coffee and communicate with other parents.

The Maraka Festival is coming up very quickly. On Saturday the 30th of October students will be able to be part of the celebration by joining Ingham State School’s float. Students have already received letters regarding their participation. This year’s theme is unexpected, it is ‘Aussie Halloween’. Remember that due to safety guidelines the number of students joining the float will be limited as there is only a certain amount of space available on the float. Day 1

The first day was a fun and interesting experience! The first lesson was a team building challenge to help introduce

us to the other school students. This day we didn’t do very much but we did watch some informational

documentaries and slideshows. The second lesson didn’t really go as planned because it rained when we were meant

to make a life size replica of a Humpback Whale with chalk. The end of the day we concluded with an environmental

speaker talking to the group about their organisation and how we can make a difference.

Day 2

The second day of our STEM excursion was very exciting. We started off in the science room talking about the day’s

events. We then proceeded to run a mock survey of sea turtles, we coded our drones to fly to each picture of a sea

turtle and take a picture. After this we started to talk about the kinds of seagrass that we would find and how we

were going to do the survey. We walked to Rowes Bay, had a quick morning tea break, changed into our wet shoes

and then continued to walk onto the mud flats to begin the survey. Three teams were chosen and they would each go

to their measuring line and half of the team would use small pipes to look for a seed but unfortunately, we did not find

many seeds. The other half of the team would use the metal square outline at each five-metre interval to check for the

amount of seagrass in the outline, the sea life in the outline etc. After the first half of the team had finished half of the

seagrass survey, the two halves of the team would swap what they were doing. After lunch we had a sand sculpture

building contest, the objective was to create a sea animal that was endangered and eats seagrass. Our team built a

life-sized leather back turtle with plastic around its neck and it was stuck in oil on the beach. We walked back to

Belgian Gardens SS and discussed day three.

Overall, we had lots of fun and we were all excited for the next day.

Day 3

On the third day of Green STEM we arrived at Belgian Gardens State school with our homemade tools and we

met in the science room with the other schools. Mr Murphy talked about our day and we walked to Rowes

Bay. After that we split up into two groups, and we went our different ways and started to pick up rubbish.

There were two different types of rubbish, marine debris and community rubbish. Marine debris is any rubbish

that doesn’t belong in the ocean that is in the ocean or on the beach and community is rubbish that is not on

the beach. We picked up all the rubbish we found, put it into bags and then we met up with the other group to

sort out all of the rubbish we had found. We all took turns sorting the rubbish and then counting it, we found

around 800 pieces of rubbish in one and a half hours. Then we walked back to Belgian Gardens SS and ate

lunch on the tennis court. We then had a zoom call with a Reef HQ worker who talked to us about the turtle

hospital. Mr Murphy talked about our last day, where we will snorkel at Magnetic Island.

Performing Arts

Instrumental Music – Strings

I was so happy last week that the majority of children remembered all their instruments and music for their lessons. Please remind your child to keep their fingernails short, as long fingernails are not appropriate for string playing.

String ensemble is on this Friday at 8:00am for all year 4-6 children. We are looking forward to performing a song at the fete so please make sure your child is at the rehearsal this Friday.

Kind Regards,Lynda Wright

Instrumental Music – Woodwind / Brass / Percussion (Multi)

It was great to see that most of the instrumental music students remembered to bring their instruments on Monday! A reminder that before school band rehearsals and lessons will now be held on Monday’s for the rest of the year. It is very important that all students attend before school band rehearsals and lessons, as we prepare for upcoming assessment tasks and end of year performances.

The Year 6 instrumental students attended their first before school band rehearsal with the high school band last Friday morning at Ingham State High School. All of the students had a great time, and enjoyed playing some new music! Students will attend the before school band rehearsals up until, and including Friday of Week 7 (19 November).

The Year 5 and 6 senior instrumental students will be performing at the Fete this Saturday. We are the first performance in the concert, so all students will need to meet Mrs Gunston in the Music Room with their instrument and music no later than 5:15pm.

Mrs Gunston

Choir

All students in the school choir will be performing a song at the Fete this Saturday. The choir will be performing at approximately 6:30pm. All students in the choir will need to meet Mrs Gunston at the side of the stage area at approximately 6:20pm.
