Holiday Homework for Class IX
Subject: English
Prepare a project based on the present scenario and the condition of the people across the globe and compare it with
the scenario and condition that prevailed in the Indian mythological stories and epics based on the concept of
quarantine and self-isolation which even had its presence during that era. Students are advised to refer to the incidents
from Ramayana with special reference to the exile of Rama as well as the episode of Ahalya. References must also be
drawn keeping in mind the exile of Pandavas and their life under the isolation period. A comparative study with any
other sphere of mythology can be shared and included to enhance the quality of the content.
Students must paste pictures which are relevant and necessary to explain the project. The students are advised to
prepare the project either in an A4 size paper and attach it in a channel file or they can even use their pages of the old
copy they have or may use a new notebook available with them and can staple the sheets in a sequential manner with
the necessary pictures attached with their writings.

4. Activity based question:
Carry out the following osmosis experiment:
Take four peeled potato halves and scoop each one out to make potato cups. One of these potato cups should be made
from a boiled potato. Put each potato cup into a trough containing water. Now
(a) Keep cup A empty,
(b) put one teaspoon sugar in cup B.
(c) put one teaspoon salt in cup C.
(d) put one teaspoon sugar in the boiled potato cup D.
Keep these for 2 hours. Then observe the four potato cups and answer the following:

(iii) Explain why water does not gather in the hollowed out portions of A and D.
5. Answer the following questions from the paragraph given below:
All cells must take up and turn out materials through cell membrane .The plasma membrane acts as physical barrier
between the cell and its surrounding environment and between the cell organelles and the surrounding cytoplasm. The
cell membranes are not freely permeable, i.e., they do not allow movement of all kinds of substances across them.
Instead, these are selectively permeable, i.e., they allow the entry or exit of only selected materials. Cell membranes
allow the movement of different materials across them differently involving passive transport, active transport and bulk
transport.
(a) name two processes of transport of materials which are slow , do not expand energy and do not use carrier protein?
(b) Name any two substances which require the use of energy and carrier proteins for their transport through plasma
membrane?
(c) Name the special processes which are involved in the bulk transport of materials across the plasma membrane?
(d) Which special process involving bulk transport is also called ‘cell drinking?
