“Plant Ideas — Cultivate Life” Lenda Jablonski, PresidentOur theme for Garden Club this year is “Plant Ideas – Cultivate Life” taking direction and the continuing theme from last years President, Nancy Day who chose “Cultivating Connections” to guide us through the year.

The connections we make through Garden Club lead us to new ideas on how to enjoy and grow our lives through simple acts of gardening and connecting.

Ideas come to us for many of the programs we continue to support not only within our own community but also in Beaufort and surrounding areas.

Just as we have done for many years we will actively participate in:

Z Beaufort National Cemetery plantingsZ Wreaths for the Blue Star Memorial Z Decorate a tree for the Caroline Hospice Festival of TreesZ Design arrangements for the Historic Beaufort Foundation Fall Festival of HousesZ Encourage independance though landscaping for Habitat for Humanity homesZ Assist with beach clean up at Hunting IslandZ Continuing youth projects such as the Thumbs Up tutoring programZ Create holiday cheer for children served by the Franciscan Center on St Helena Island

The Dataw Garden Club will continue to support and participate in local island activities, many that have become traditional favorites:Z Expand our membership by inviting gentlemen of the island to join the Garden Club

Z Collaborate with the Dataw Island Yacht club and the Dataw Historic Foundation to celebrate the Light Up the Night, our annual kick off to the holidays.

Z Add to the holiday feeling by creating bows for landscape departments use to decorate around the island.

Z Conduct plant sales for the spring, fall and holiday time

Z Liaison with the Dataw Conservancy and DIOA Common Grounds committees to be aware of gardening or planting issues on the island, offering assistance or monetary donations where possible.

Working with the Dataw Island Club Membership Director and Membership Committee we will welcome and invite new resident club members to join the Dataw Garden Club and gather new ideas from new residents and cultivate friendships.

I am honored to be at the forefront of the Dataw Garden Club and will strive to expand our membership using new ideas and learned life experiences, whether in the garden or in the neighborhood so enjoy the dirt, flowers, trees and this wonderful place we call home.

Plant Ideas—Cultivating Friendships for Lifeby Sandi Fischer, Guest Inspiration Writer

Any gardener who has planted even one little seed is filled with great hope and expectation for all the possibilities it holds. When it sprouts, the planter can’t help but ponder the miracle of it all. Consider how any small seed — the apple pip that grew the tree producing juicy fruit or the swirling maple samara that took root, grew tall and strong, then yielded sweet syrupy sap. Marvel at the information squeezed into such a tiny package and how, through time and nurturing, a miniature seed can grow into a magnificent plant, flower or tree, bearing beauty and food for us.

Planting ideas can be like sowing seeds, too. In 1891 a group of women in Athens, Georgia, had a notion to start a garden club. They planted the idea that people who loved gardening could bond together to share, learn, and work together for their personal benefit and for that of their communities. Today all 50 states have over 5,000 individual clubs with over 175,000 members. The Dataw Island Garden Club is one of the products of that seed–planting over 100 years ago. What a wonderful result of that first idea sown in hope and expectation and resulting in the many gardens that beautify our country — in backyards, in communities and in special dedicated parks and grounds.

A by–product of seed–planting garden clubs is found in the rich soil of member relationships. Ask any Dataw Garden Club member and she will say that one of the best aspects of this club is the “garden of friendships” that is cultivated. Members help garden seedlings sprout with smiles, kind words, compliments, knowledge–sharing, helping hands, and listening ears. These small tokens, like rain and sunshine, produce a splendid garden of camaraderie within the club.

“Plant ideas — Cultivate Life” . . . what better way to devote this Dataw Garden Club year than to join hands and hearts in gardening together, growing ideas and relationships. With constant, loving attention — whether ideas, plants or friendships — this garden club will be well–rooted, able to bear much fruit. The result will be a perennial blessing of joy, a harvest the Club will boast on Dataw Island all year long.

Background and Description of the Dataw Garden ClubIn 1987 a few of Dataw’s lady gardeners formed the Dataw Island Garden Club. They met in member’s homes or at the Cannery and had to limit membership because of the limited space for seating. Because more women wanted to join then the Dataw Island Garden Club had room for, in 1989 the Dataw Oaks Garden Club was formed and also met in member‘s homes or the Cannery. After the “Oaks” had a popular and successful garden show, the membership grew and the two clubs decided to become one club. In 1993, the Dataw Island Garden Club and the Dataw Oaks Garden Club merged to form the Dataw Garden Club. Members met in the dining room or upstairs in what is now the Tabby Room.

SpEAKER: Megan Stegmeir, Hunting Island Interpretative Ranger

Megan was born and raised in Beaufort, SC and always had an interest in nature and animals. After graduating from high school in 2006, Megan decided that she wanted a career where she would be outdoors and interacting with nature on a daily basis. She enrolled in the University of South Carolina Beaufort’s Biology program. As she worked her way though college, she started working for the South Carolina State Park Service at Hunting Island State Park as a retail sales clerk in 2010. Megan was ecstatic to learn that Hunting Island had a Nature Center - and from that point on, she knew she wanted to manage the center once she completed her Biology degree. After receiving her Biology degree from USCB in 2010, she worked at Fripp Island Golf and Beach Resort as their Head Naturalist. After three years, she than accepted an Assistant Park Ranger position with Hunting Island State Park. And, in 2014, when the Interpretative Ranger position became available, she applied and was awarded that position. As the Interpretative Ranger, Megan manages the park’s nature/recreational programs. She also is responsible for taking care of several different species of animals in the Nature Center and holds one of the permits for the park’s sea turtle conservation program. In 2015, Megan completed her certification as a Low Country Master Naturalist. On her days off, you can usually find her doing something outside — biking, kayaking, fishing or hiking. She also enjoys spending time with her family and her lovable Boston terrier, Kojak

SpEAKERSChristi Henry, Maeneen Klein, Jenifer Lugar

Christi Henry was raised in Beaufort and began her Horticulture career in 1979 working for Fripp Island. She owned and operated her own landscape and maintenance company, Southern Belle Gardening, from 1981-1999. She sold that business and went into semi-retirement until 2001 when she came to work at Dataw as the Landscape Director. She took on a personal interest and challenge in maintaining the beauty of Dataw. The biggest challenge thus far has been Hurrican Matthew which “we all survived!” Christi continues her work here at Dataw and also has these accomplishments in her personal resume: Horticulture TCL Beaufort SC; Master Gardener; Master Naturalist; Certified Pesticide Applicator, Class 3; Owner of Tuck-in-the-Woods Campground; Owner of Pasture Shed Farm and Avid Outdoor Enthusiast.

Maeneen Klein is a Master Gardener, being certified in both North Carolina and South Caroline. In her career, she was very active in Water Conservation. She was the Water Conservation Manager for the City of Charlotte, North Carolina Government. In that capacity she performed many functions — including developing and implementing water conservation policies and strategies to ensure sustainability of the city’s water supply, creating the city’s drought response plan, conceiving Water Smart Landscape Initiatives to encourage the creation of landscaping plans to reduce the impact on water resources and leading the development of regional water conservation policies affecting water resources in 11 communities across the Catawba River Basin. Maeneen moved to Dataw in October, 2016, just as Matthew was making its way towards South Carolina — she and her husband, Jim, arrived only to be evacuated the same day. Maeneen has been very active in the Beaufort community as well as at Dataw. She is a docent for the Beaufort Historical Society and was a co-chair for Camp Dataw. In addition, Maeneen is involved in many Dataw activities including golfing and kayaking. She and Jim have four daughters and enjoy traveling to Atlanta to visit their extended family.

Jenifer Lugar is a Dataw resident and is well know throughout the Island as a landscaping and planting expert. She has been a certified SC Master Gardener since 2009, a few years after moving to Dataw. Since then she has worked in numerous gardens and landscapes, both on and off the island. She educates residents on proper plant placement, care and maintenance of their gardens and plants. More recently, Jenifer has incorporated design into her landscape business with the innovative use of native plants, mulch and hardscapes.

11:00 am: programNative Plants for the Beaufort Garden

SpEAKER: Daniel payne, Master GardenerAs a child Daniel C. Payne would often plant in the garden at his family’s home. Because of his childhood experiences as a gardener and hearing his father’s lectures on insects, he decided to pursue a career in botany. He received his horticulture degree from the University of Georgia in 1991 and his Masters in plant and environmental sciences for Clemson University in 2010.Today Payne is a botanist and the owner of Naturescapes of Beaufort, a nursery where he grows more than 200 plant species. Naturescapes of Beaufort offers earth–friendly landscaping, native plant sales, vegetation surveys and consultations. Payne says that the plants people keep in their gardens determine the types of birds, butterflies and other animals and insects that come to their surroundings. Daniel’s academic work also consists of lecturing at schools, museums and other assembled groups on the importance of botany. When Payne is not operating his nursery or giving lectures, he visits gardens and provides advice on plant care and pruning. His hobbies are swimming (particularly the salt water of Lucy Creek), kayaking, hiking and meeting new people.
