GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The Lab-Volt Motor Winding Kit, Model 8022, offers anew approach to teaching construction techniques forelectrical machines. Starting with such basic componentsas laminations, motor ends, and magnet wire, theLab-Volt Motor Winding Kit permits the construction ofthe following four machines:

a squirrel-cage induction motor;a wound-rotor induction motor;a three-phase synchronous machine; and

a split-phase capacitor-start motor.All parts necessary for assembly and constructionof the four machines are included in the kit. Two typesof stator laminations are included for winding a three-phase stator and a single-phase stator.

Three types of rotors are included in the kit:a squirrel-cage rotor (completely assembled);a rotor with open-slot laminations allowing winding ofa wound rotor by the student; and

a rotor with cruciform laminations and a damper as-sembly, allowing winding of a 4-pole synchronousmachine rotor by the student.

The rotors are made of a double-ended stainless steelshaft on which are permanently assembled the ballbearings and laminations.

There is enough material supplied with the kit to windeach type of machine at least five times. All the neces-sary materials lacing cord, slot insulators, insulatingmaterial, wooden wedges, and insulated magnet wire are included.

A hand-operated coil winder, equipped with an ad- justable mandrel and a turn counter, facilitates the con-struction of the different windings according to the speci-fications described in the instruction manual. All the toolssuch as the plastic mallet, scissors, wire stripper, solder-ing iron, and compass, are included in the kit.

The student manual gives winding data for eachmachine and describes all the winding steps in detail.

Once the rotor and stator have been wound, studentsfollow a detailed machine assembly procedure.

When the machine has been assembled, it is in-stalled on the support module with clamps and wing nuts.The machine windings are connected to the associatedterminals of the module through a polarized plug.

Each machine has its own interchangeable plasticface overlay. The nominal rating and the winding sche-matics are silk-screened on the overlay. Machine compo-nents, such as capacitors, centrifugal switches, andpotentiometers, are fastened to the machine or to itsbase with special fasteners without using a tool.

Once the machine is mounted on the support mod-ule, it can be inserted into a Lab-Volt EMS workstationand coupled to a prime mover or a dynamometer tocheck its electrical specifications and confirm that it iswound properly. A completed machine can be used toperform exercises in the EMS student manual.

When the characteristics of the machine have beenverified, the windings are removed from the slots tosalvage the stator and rotor laminations for the nextstudent.
