The Neo-Tethyan tectonic activity initiated the development ofthe stretched Levant margin in the early Jurassic time.

At the end of the Cretaceous, a regional transpressive eventtriggered the inversion of extensional structures in the easternpart of the basin leading to the development of the present-daymargin configuration.

The subsidence history graphs (on the left) illustrate the evolutionof two structural domains. The graphs show that the tectonicsubsidence shows a typical lithospheric thermal decay since theJurassic in the deep offshore. For the Upper Slope, the tectonicsubsidence halts during the Paleogene-Neogene as a consequenceof the tectonic compression. The total subsidence results fromchanging sedimentation rates in a gently subsidizing basin.

CRUSTAL STRUCTURE AND SUBSIDENCE HISTORIES OF THE LEVANT BASIN

The crustal nature of the Levant basin is still a matter of debate,but thick continental crust (30-35 km) in the east that thins to10-12km in the central part of the basin is generally well definedby seismic refraction and gravity models. (Ben-Avraham et al.,2002)

The thin crust in the central Levant is most likely an extendedand attenuated continental crust that is associated with lowerheat-flow when compared to the heat-flow of the eastern shelfand margin/slope.
