Good Research Practice3.7.3 RETAINING RESEARCH EVIDENCE Publication of research results does not negate the need to retain originalrecords of research evidence generated during the lifetime of theresearch project.
All supporting evidence for research undertaken, including publications, must be retained securely in a durable form and for a period of time to bedetermined by the conditions set by the particular research sponsor.
It is recommended good practice that evidence for research based onclinical samples or relating to public health be retained for twenty years.

Abstract of main stipulations

DC101 workshop, DCC roadshow in Sheffield, 3 March 2011
Data Management and Sharing PlansFunders typically want a short statement covering:• What data will be created (format, types) and how?
• How will the data be documented and described?
• How will you manage ethics and Intellectual Property?
• What are the plans for data sharing and access?
• What is the strategy for long-term preservation?

Differences in data plan requirements• Set questions (Je-S section) vs open statement
– AHRC (& ESRC until Spring 2011) ask set questions, other ask for statement
• Biomedical emphasis on data sharing– State foreseeable use, methods/place of sharing, timescales for release, limits
• NERC data centres write plans for thematic programmes– http://www.noc.soton.ac.uk/rapid/sci/documents/rapid_data_plan.pdf – http://badc.nerc.ac.uk/data/quest/QUEST_dmp.pdf

Data plan trends and changes• Move towards open statements
• New NERC policy states:– All research publications must include a statement on how the supporting data
and any other relevant research materials can be accessed.
and that DMP must identify:– which datasets are of long-term value, based on NERC's Data Value Checklist– all resources needed to implement the Data Management Plan
• RCUK Principles for Data Management (due Summer 2011)
• Join up with initiatives overseas – NSF DataOne project, U3C etc
