    )$e Federal Data Center Consolidation initiative is targeted to reduce t$eoverall cost o6 data center o#erations and energy consum#tion by Federal

    "gencies. Currently, t$ere are over 1,100 data centers in use across t$e

    6ederal government +it$ little reuse or s$aring o6 resources +it$in or across

    "gencies. In addition, data centers consume a gro+ing #ortion o6 t$e

    >ation@s energyAelectricity su##ly due to gro+ing demand 6or t$e services

    t$ey #rovide. Data centers used about '1 billion 45$ o6 electricity in 200',

    re#resenting 1.%B o6 all .(. electricity consum#tion and double t$e amount

    consumed in 2000. It is #roected t$at data center usage +ill e=ceed 100

    billion 45$ by 2011, or 2.%B o6 total .(. electricity consum#tion. )$is very

    e=tensive and continuously gro+ing consum#tion o6 energy by data centers

    in t$e ( em#$asi/es t$e very real need to ac$ieve signicant im#rovements

    in eciency o6 Federal data center o#erations.
