Data-Based Problem-Solving

The Six NU Data Pragmatics:

1. Knowing a variety of ways to collect data

2. Choosing the best measures to answer the team’s questions about a student

3. Organizing and graphing the data

4. Making sense of meaningful trends and differences in student data

5. Using the data in team problem solving and planning

6. Selecting interventions to use in response to the data

The Case:• Student: Mary (age 9, grade 4)• Strengths: Nice student, interacts well with others, wants to do well

in school• Problems Identified: Diagnosed with ADHD, currently functioning

on a 2nd grade reading level, easily distracted by others, unorganized, often misplaces books/papers, occasionally forgets HW, difficulty completing her work in a timely manner, difficulty following directions

• Data Collected: Other than grades and some observational notes, very little data has been collected on Mary

• First Steps: Collect some broad screening data on Mary’s academic achievement, behavioral success and academic engagement
