DESCRIPTION

The Cit y of Sydney proposes to convert 277 Bourke Street into a new childcare centre. Indoor and outdoor playspaces are connected by an innovated raised walkway and deck, which enables the pedestrian lane below to remain open. The new centre will provide places for up to 63 children including babies over three floors. The lower ground floor will be converted into a new community space.

Preliminary Traffic Studies are complete. Council is reviewing:

• Traffic within the area and this project’s impact on it;

• Set-down/ pick-up spaces;

• Loading spaces;

• Bike parking facilities;

• Relationship of set-down/ pick-up spaces and bike parking facilities to existing cycleway;

• In the past decade, households with children in the City of Sydney increased by over 44%

• 1560 children under the age of 5 live in the East Sydney area

• Research shows a significant need for long-day childcare especially for babies

• 460 additional childcare places are needed in Oxford Street and Kings Cross Villages

• 2,500 are required across the City of Sydney

• 7 sqm of outdoor space per child

• 3.25 sqm of indoor space per child

• Children and staff must be able to move safely between the outdoor and indoor spaces

• Disadvantaged children and local children receive priority
