For many years anarchism has beenassociated by the press and historians with

a species of anti-political state socialismbased on the messianic role of the peopleor the workers. They have been supportedin this view by many so-called anarchistswho are actually collectivists who dislikecentralization. Despite the modificationsforced by reality upon the most intransigentpopulists, the illusion still persists asillusions usually do.

The first part of this essay is devoted to acriticism of this illusion. Why do themasses remain unresponsive to the

anarchist message? Could it be that itonly appeals to a minority? And if so, wouldit not be better to adjust ones sightsaccordingly?

One important element of the populist mythis the idea that during historical revolutionsthe people rise as a whole and topple theirmasters. They are supposed to beinstinctively on the side of freedom. Theassumption is that because the worker isexploited, because he is subjected to the

will of his bosses, he must therefore byvirtue of his situation desire to be free andtherefore be more responsive to Anarchistideas than members of other classes.

Some Notes on Anarchismand The Proletarian Myth

Introduction

In the field of psychopathology, nihilistdelirium represents the negation ofpersonality and/or the negation of onesown body or of the surrounding world.This text draws inspiration from the study

In support of this assumption theproletarian mythicists assiduouslycollect scraps of information aboutthe direct action of the masses.They tell us of the black flag wavingover factories during the KoreanWar, they go into raptures about the

Berlin Uprising of 1953, theHungarian Revolt of 1956, theyenthuse about the first days ofCastros regime in Cuba and theMay Days in Paris in 1968 not tomention the Paris Commune and theMexican, Russian and Spanishrevolutions. What they do not detailare the far more numerous andpersistent examples of thoseproletarians who support the rulerswho milk them, who provide the bulk

of the personnel of the prisons,police and military services, who arealways the first in the sights ofother conforming guns, and whopersecute the outstanding individualand clamour for conformity.

One of the most onerous burdensanarchists have to carry is thisassociation with the dreary cult ofthe workers, of those ordinarydown-to-earth millions who havewillingly been the fodder of their

pastors and masters throughout theages.

The proletarian mythicists can go asfar back as they wish into the pastto find cases of direct action andcreativity on the part of thepeople. What they cannot do isshow how these have eversupplanted authoritarian systems, orthat they have not carried withinthem the seeds of new forms of

2.Would I deny that the class struggleexists, then? I do not. But there isconsiderable confusion between the factof the class struggle and the theoryof theclass struggle.

The awareness and extent of thisconflict are not so widespread as theclass war preachers would likethemselves and others to believe, but itdoes exist and has at times resulted inimproved conditions for the employees. Itis as natural for a wage-earner to defendhis interest as it is for a wage-payer todefend his. This is the fact of the matter

and only a fool would deny it.

The theory, on the other hand, is basedon the unverifiable belief that this conflictof interests will or can eventually lead tothe abolition of exploitation and theestablishment of a classless society.Whether the rationale is the Marxist viewof a historical dialectic impelling the classstruggle to the final resolution of allconflict in communism, or the Bakunists/Kropotkinist faith in the spontaneousrevolutionary creativity of the masses,makes little difference to the basic notionthat the class struggle is the royal road toutopia. However modified byqualifications, or overlaid by scientific

jargon, the theory remains a secularized

version of the messianic belief inthe coming of the kingdom ofheaven on earth and has aboutas much evidence in its favor. Forover 150 years the proletarianidealists have been exhorting theworkers to be this or that, to dothis or that, and their responsehas been virtually nil unless thecall has been to war. After more

years than any of us alive canremember, the response of thevast majority of workers toanarchist ideas has been eitherindifference or hostility.

No revolt of the proletariat, or theirpredecessors in revolutionarymythology, has ever ended theirservility. Their alleged creativityand desire for freedom, as aclass, is so much populistmoonshine and is mostly the

product of guilt-ridden upper andmiddle class intellectuals whowant to expiate their social sins.Kropotkin, who is a typicalexample, repeats over and overagain that Anarchism is thecreation of the masses, butnever explains the causalconnection between the two. Allhe does is give some selectedhistorical incidents which heinterprets as being such, and

these are usually democraticrather than anarchist in character.

3.The trouble with much of what istoday called anarchism is thefact that its exponents aredominated by socializedmentalities. By this I mean anobsession with the notion that theliberation of the individual is byway of integration with society.Not, in this case, existing society,but an ideal, classless/statelesssociety that the indefinite future issupposed to bring.

The distinguishing feature of thistype of socialized mentality is itspossession by the belief thatanarchism equals anti-statism.Once the State has beeneliminated, as the argument runs,mankind will dwell in freedom.Unfortunately, this is not the case,

because authority has othersources than the State. One ofthese is society. Indeed, socialcustoms and mores, because theyare not specified in legalenactments, can be more

persistently oppressive than the laws ofthe State against which, at times, thereis some measure of juridical defense.Many professed anarchists recognize theoppressiveness of the State, but areblind to that of society. Their anarchytherefore, consists of replacing thevertical authority of the State with thehorizontal authority of Society.

As an anarchist-individualist Iacknowledge neither the legitimacy ofState control over me, nor that of anacephalous mob labeling itselfanarchist. I am in agreement withRenzo Novatore when he wrote:

Anarchy is not a social form, buta method of individuation. No society willconcede to me more than a limitedfreedom and well-being that it grants ofits members. But I am not content withthis and want more. I want all that I have

the power to conquer. Every societyseeks to confine me to the august limitsof the permitted and prohibited. But I donot acknowledge these limits, for nothingis forbidden and all is permitted to thosethat have the force and the valor.

Consequently, anarchy is not theconstruction of a new and suffocatingsociety. It is a decisive fight, against allsocieties christian, democratic,socialist, communist, etc., etc. Anarchismis the eternal struggle of a small minority

of aristocratic outsiders against all thesocieties that follow one another on thestage of history.

Like it or not, Anarchist ideas have neverbeen more than the property of a smallnumber of individuals who madeAnarchism their interest and pushed it assuch. The investment of the exploitedmass with revolutionary virtue, theharanguing of them in minute-circulationpapers that they never read, is oftenmerely an elaborate disguise for amoralism which lays down how theyought to behave, and throws a multi-colored cloak over how they havebehaved, do behave, and will behave save, of course, the Second Coming ofJesus Christ, Karl Marx and MikhailBakunin, separately or together...

Those who consider that Anarchism isorganically linked with the class struggleare really in a half-way position betweenAnarchism and socialism. On the one

hand they try to champion the ego-sovereignty that is the essence ofAnarchism. On the other they remaincaptives of the democratic-collectivist-proletarian myths. Until they can cut this

After 53 days in isolation and the venge-ful attitude, concerning the carrying out ofmy disciplinary transfer from Thebesprison to Diavata, on the 26th of June Iwas moved to Koridallos prisons for theupcoming trial of the persecution of thesolidarity text of the CCF for the anarchiststeki [centre]Nadir. The regime ofisolation broke not because decisionswere made, but because of the condi-tions.

Besides, every prisoner is a number, everynumber is one more paper in the uselesspiles on top of the desks of bureaucratswhich is easily lost or thoroughly buried.Two days later it is announced to me thatI must be transferred again to Diavataprisons. A fact that meant a return toisolation.

Thus, on the morning of Friday June 29thand while my escort (special forces,cops, special force for transfers), waited, Iclearly stated that I refuse to follow, Irefuse to return, I refuse to participate intheir game. In such or similar cases thetactic followed by the state mechanismis given. It begins with an attempt to bringdown your moral, highlighting the dead-end of the situation and the futility of yourchoice, i.e. there is no other way andconcludes with the known threats aboutviolent transfer. Their methods didnt workof course, neither did they create even amillimetre of doubt in my refusal and no

intention to conciliate. Besides thedecision which derives from the soul andthe clear choices is the one of non-quitting, of continuation of the rupturewith the correctional system. After a long

Meanwhile, the few comrades presentin the courtroom audience shouted:The passion for freedom is strongerthan all prison cells! A recess wascalled, but when the session resumedthe defendants didnt return, decidingagainst attending and making theirapologias. The trial was obligatorilyadjourned to July 20, which session isscheduled to begin with theprosecutors closing arguments.

While our four comrades, accompaniedby a special escort of pigs, were beingled back to prison, they ran into thepresiding judge in a hallway. DamianoBolano shouted at him: Your days arenumbered, judge!This caused the

judge to return to the courtroom to takerefuge, leaving smiles on the faces ofour comrades.

the same time lost faith in both thecollectivist and authoritariansolutions to their problems. Such away of going on, however, is not aproduct of the class struggle. It isfirst and foremost an individualisteffort: the creation of an egoisticsensibility.

Alessandro Settepani and Sergio MariaStefani, both in preventive detention as aresult of Operation Ardire, appeared attheir public hearing for OperationShadow, whose leading prosecutor is alsothe instigator behind Operation Ardire:Manuela Comodi. Those attending thetrial in solidarity were able to greet andshare a few words with the compas.

Settepani and Stefani were together inthe same cell for over half an hour until

the arrival of Comodi, who disapprovinglyobserved that there was a prohibition onintermingling in effect, given thatSettepani and Stefani are also codefen-dants in Operation Ardire.

To all the comrades

I wont dwell on the summary of thestaging posts that the servants ofpower have to follow when any

public prosecutor orders them toarrest a rebel. They fulfil their dutyegregiously and using any means,but by now they have becomepredictable, banal and not at alloriginal, in a regular cycle of repres-sion, which an anarchist is certainlynot afraid of. So, since WednesdayJune 13 2012 I have been lockedup in the Don Bosco prison of Pisaalong with my comrade Stefano: ahandful of iron and concrete iskeeping us apart.

Judicial isolation, as it is smartlydefined by codes and laws that Idespise, is broken any time I receivewords burning with love and solidar-ity, in spite of the censorship on themail. I thank the comrades who sentthem to me. Words received afterten days of total silence, which hadbeen planned by those who seethese words as a threat to theirpower: this confirms that no digni-

fied prisoner is alone!

What can be said as concerns thecharges? Hackneyed article 270bis[subversive association]is one again

We found Settepani and Stefani inquite decent shape, as well asmoved by the presence of friendsand compas.

The hearing lasted just under anhour (keeping in mind that theprosecutor showed up 45 minuteslate) and ended with an adjournmentto September 25.

Right afterward, beginning at 11a.m., was the reconsideration ofSettepani, Stefano Gabriele Fosco,and Elisa Di Bernardos detention.Unfortunately, just like with Stefani,Katia Di Stefano, and Peppe LoTurco, the courts decision wasunfavorable to our comrades.More updates will follow.

Camenisch, imprisoned in Switzerland,has drafted a first letter regarding theoperation boldness (OperazioneArdire). He is one of the accused in thisfrenzied construct against anarchists inItaly, Switzerland, Germany and Greece.

Brief no.1 about the latest anti-anar-chist (baptized bold, what gives amarked effect to it) construct byROS (& f.) Brutti

ROSstands for the special operationsunits, which I call dirty operations units(& forgers), since historically Im a verity-abider. Lidia Brutti is the presiding GIP(judge for preliminary investigations) ofthe public prosecutors office in Perugia.

Preliminary remark: Until today I was notsubject to official notices or reactionsfrom the Swiss authorities, and havebeen informed little by little by the mediaand via my correspondence. I wasdelivered by solidarians theover 200

pages longconstructs strong indictmentdossier, and I leafed through it, thusbeing able to confirm my initial (from TVand the Press) impression that it is infact a theorem with more or less con-spicuous but overall totally inane evi-dence. I have not yet realized myintention to release a personal publicinformative and solidarity text. But myrevolutionary solidarity beyond alldifferences against the repression ismore than obvious, and more than

naturally goes out to comrades arrestedand subjected to investigations in thisumpteenth construct of the ROS (& f.)under the directorship of the subjectGanzer the carabiniersGeneral, who in2010 was convicted in the first instanceof international drug trade to 14 years inprison!

Today (June 28th) I received fromStefano Fosco, from Pisa prison, twoletters dated June 18th and 21st, bothpostmarked: Pisa 26.06.2012. Accordingto the defense counsel, a speedy transferof him and Elisa to the high-securityprison of Alessandria, or another prisonnear Perugia, is scheduled. I am as sureas Stefano also is that the accusatorial

I would have liked to have written earlier,but for various circumstances I haventhad the chance to yet. I want to send awarm greeting and say thanks to every-one who has worried about me and my

situation, to those who have shownsolidarity with Mario and I. In thesedifficult moments it means a lot to havepeople standing in solidarity from near orfrom far, even without ever having metme. I sent a revolutionary hug to all ofyou.

I want to clarify that despite all of the liesof the Mexico City police forces and themass media, I was never arrested andthey never had me detained in any oftheir prisons. I have tried to understand

why they would have said that and spreadsuch false information throughout Mexicoas well as Australia, but at the end of theday, as a free person I dont think like apolice officer, and I wont be able to

In the end, everyonehas desperately opted for declara-tions based on assumptions; theyhave been defeated without everhaving fought. I hope that Vico hasnot entered into this game of fear.

I want to clarify something:

politically, I have always distancedmyself from hierarchical, patriar-chal, speciesist and activistorganizations (typical of politicalparties). I do not believe indogmas, martyrs or heroes, so Imnot part of OARS, Im not part ofRED VERDE (Green Network),as those in Power like to believe,based on what Renatto assertedin his statement, since members ofOARS also participate in REDVERDE. Anarchy is not about keeping

10 July, Puente Alto, Santiago, Chile:Direct action group 'Friends of Gunpowder'took responsibility for the recent bombing ofPuente Alto Police Courthouse. 28 June, Santiago, Chile: Across the countryone of the many marches that have happenedlately by students demanding free education in$hile took place. During the demo, clasheswith police lasted nearly four hours, and muchof the road signs, TranSantiago bus stops andtraffic signals were destroyed. Banks and

Claro telephone branches were attacked andtwo pharmacies were looted. A police vantransporting bastards in uniform was alsoattacked. Overwhelmed by the horde ofpeople pouncing on them, they fled with their

weapons in hand to protect themselvesand ran away. The vehicle was de-stroyed. A similar fact occurred on18th Street in downtown Santiago,when a truck from the Gendarmerialost control and collided with a post.The co-pilot of the vehicle fled rapidly

while the driver was beaten with sticksand rocks before managing to escape.The truck, which found itself aban-doned in the street, was attacked by alarge amount of encapuchadxs[hooded ones]who also tried to open itwhile spray painting it and trying to putit on fire. A carabinieros [paramilitarypolice] water cannon finally arrived tosave it and all were able to realize thattwo prison guards were still hiddeninside. After the demo on the Alameda,[central avenue], which ended inclashes with the carabinieros, policeofficers injured, damage to historicalmonuments, graffiti, destruction ofperimeter fences, garbage containers,security modules, streetlights,standpipes and damage to publicprivate property, the Municipality ofSantiago informed that the damagessuffered were evaluated at over 122million Chilean pesos. Road signs weremost affected, 146 of them werecompletely destroyed. 19 traffic lights

and 13 TranSantiago bus stops weredamaged. The large number of peopleinvolved made this demo one with themost police wounded. The press saidthat 36 carabinieros were wounded,among whom three were hospitalizedbecause of the severity of their injuries.Yesterday, of the thousands of partici-pants, there were a total of 472 arrests,of which 28 are in custody, accusedmainly of mischief and assault againstthe police. The worst case is that of

Adrin Villa Cayuqueo who after beingcharged for possession of molotov wasaccused for the attack on the policetruck during the demonstration. Adrinfaced a hearing in which he wasaccused by the disgusting institution ofthe gendarmerie. The comrade is keptin custody for 80 days the length ofthe investigation period.
