WE PUBLISH LOCAL AND WORLD’S LATEST HAPPENINGS VOL. XXXIII HILO, HAWAII, T. H., MONDAY, MAY 12, 1941 NO. 8944 GERMANS MAY DARDENELLES VON PAPAN ON WAY TO ANKARA TO PRESENT DEMANDS ISTANBUL, May 11 — German Ambassador to Turkey, Franz von Papan, accompanied by another high Nazi official is understood to have left Berlin late last Saturday and is expected to arrive in An- kara either today or tomorrow, ac- cording to dispatches reaching here from the German capital. Diplomatic developments of un- usual significance are expected as soon as von Papen arrives in An- kara, followed by intensification of warfare in the middle East. It is generally expected in diplomatic circles that Germany will most likely demand that Turkey keep her hands off on German shipping passing through the Dardenelles. The Turkish government is un- derstood to be waiting anxiously for von Papen’s arrival, with news of German troops now in Greece j and the Greek islands in the Medi- terranean preparing to disembark i for Syria immediately. The con- J sensus was that Germany might not go to the extent of demanding from Turkey transit rights for troops to march across Turkey, but will confine its denjands for use of the Dardenelles and f>re sent other proposals of an econo mic nature. Hawaii County Fair Slated Oct. 16,17,18 The annual Hawaii county fair will be held three days beginning October 16 to 18 this year in Hilo, executive secretary of the Hilo Chamber of Commerce, Rob- ert S. Moir, announced. This year, the date has been set following the Maui fair so that those desiring to see the Maui fair and the Hilo fair won’t miss nei- ther. Directing the event will be Or- lando Lyman. SOVIETS NOW DEFINITELY WITH PRO-AXIS GOV- ERNMENTS MOSCOW, May 11— The Tass News Agency here disclosed here yesterday that diplomatic negotia- tions in progress from May 3rd last have been now completed be- tween the pro-Axis Iraqi govern - ment and Soviet Russia. In view of the fact that in 1939 the Iraqi government had request- ed The Soviets to recognize the territoriality of all countries then associated in the movement for independence of the Arabic race, recognition of the pro-Axis gov - ernment of Iraq at this time by the Soviets is being looked upon with unusual significance. Neutral diplomatic circles obser- ve the Soviet move as being an un- mistakable sign that consumma- tion of negotiations between these two countries at this time is an indication that the USSR is now definitely aligned with the pro- Axis governments. ricane filters bei„e produce., in a ^ a . aiW w S ^ ’S a d T a f .h e ‘rule 3 W J 2 ** f"* cial note pad shown, fitted with stop watch to record reaction of new chin in 1 11 v. t ' Pilots right leg, as can be noted in ^ ‘"™jh»wlng Pilot Stratton getting into plane. Japan Will Not Betray Its Own Policy Or Principle Says Nippon English Daily In Editorial TOKYO, May 12 __ Broadly approving- statements made in the Shanghai interview on May 9th with Ku- mataro Honda, Japanese Ambassador to Nanking, en- route to Tokyo, the Japan Times and Advertiser editori- alized the interview and substantiated the impression that Honda was arriving in Tokyo on important business. The editorial states: “Direct negotiation with Chung- king as Honda points out would be contrary to the letter and spirit of the treaty concluded with the Nanking gov- ernment last year,” adding, besides, as Honda says, it is far too late to talk on peace with Chiang Kai-shek. Calling the Nanking Treaty as the first expression of peace of the Japanese nation addressed to its neighbor nation and the first sign of peaceful augury that had em- erged from the tragedy of war, the Japan Times says: “Japan could never betray its own policy or principle by its failure to support the cause it has openly and ambitious- ly taken up.” i Marriage Isao Kashimoto, proprietor of Camera Craft Shop, and Miss Ma- sako Shigemasa, were married at the Hilo Daijirigu on May 11th. Rev. Kudo performed the cere- i mony. EDITORIAL END OF TURK INDEPENDENCE The reported meeting of Hitler and Stalin in the imme- diate future, added to the hurried return of Germapy’s act diplomat, Franz von Pappen back to Ankara, indicates but an- other and perhaps the last milestone in Hitler’s complete do- mination of the Baltic area. It appears that this time Ger- many’s sharp ax will fall upon the head of Turkey, posses- sor of the Dardenelles. About the time von Pappen reaches Ankara and begins his persuasive requests, or to put it more bluntly and to the point his demands on behalf of Adolf Hitler, upon the Turks: the Hitler-Stalin conversations will also be taking place at some European point. With British forces now determined to make their stand to protect the Suez Canal to the last, it would be hardly pos- sible for them to go to the rescue of the Turks. Without out- side assistance, there seems but little doubt that Turkey will also join the family of nations merely holding on a nominal independence, becoming another Nazi-controlled nation, list - ening to Hitler’s bidding. Any display of an independent attitude by Turkey will undoubtedly result in both Hitler and Stalin coming to an agreement to carve up the country with the name of an Epi- curean fowl into two pieces. It appears certain that there is but one alternative left for Turkey and that way is to sub- mit to Hitler’s demands, which will be made through von Pappen, peacefully. Everything points to Hitler’s ax being poised ready to chop Turkey’s neck off—yes, even before the November holi- day. Turkey’s fattening period certainly appears to have come to an end. j ______________oOo______________ CONTROL OF THE MEDITERRANEAN /> A recent dispatch from Washington indicates that Am- erican aid to the British will be soon going forth in U.S. ships manned by our sailors with destinations at some port or ports in the Red Sea. CHAPTER XXXVI ^PHE door swung back. “Come - o u t!” Bruckm ann ordered tersely.

Tonia obeyed. “W hat do you w an t?”

His m outh twisted into a sa rdonic smile. “To have a look at you. So you. not the other girl, are the great Tom a Lane?” He studied her. “Yes. it is a clever disguise but it is too bad tha t you were so clever. But for your cleverness, you would not be here now.”

She turned her back. This made him laugh. “So you

do not like me? Well, th a t is un fortunate. since we are going on a little voyage together.”

Tonia swung around. “Where are you taking m e?”

“To visit some friends of mine. They shall decide w hat to do with you.”

Tonia sa t down. She felt weak and frightened. By “friends.” she knew he must mean other members of the spy ring. They would Undoubtedly be hard and ruthless. To protect themselves, they would stop at nothing—not even murder. She shivered.

Bruckm ann had no more to say to her. He seated himself at the table, and began a game of solitaire.

Never in her life had Tonia felt so utterly alone and helpless. She thought of Michael, of Jim and of Sally. She wondered whether Michael was sorry now th a t he had talked so harshly to her last night <—wondered whether he was jo ining in the search for her. S trangely. she didn’t seem to care a great deal. Michael now seemed very remote. like some one she had met tn a dream.

The person uppermost in her thoughts was Jim. She had no doubt how he had reacted to her disappearance—had no doubt th a t he would move heaven and earth In an effort to find her. Good old Jim! In her desperate situation, she realized as never before how much he m eant to her. Face to face with danger, she saw everyth ing and every one in a different light. She was down to fundam entals—and knew th a t Jim was one of the most fundam ental things in her life. She depended on him more than on any one else she had ever known. . .,.

SHE was so absorbed in her thoughts th a t she was startled

When Bruckm ann suddenly jumped to his feet.

“Come!” he said. “T here’s Dt^m- v an !”

Not until then, did she hear the muffled roar of an approaching m otor launch. Her heart sank.

Bruckm ann pulled out a gun and ordered her to follow him down th e ladder. On the lower floor, he shoved back a sliding door th a t opened onto a small pier, then took her by the arm and led her outside.

Moonlight flooded the water— disclosed the launch a short distance away, heading in toward the pier.

“Hey, B ruckm ann!” called the m an a t the wheel.

“All right. Donovan!”The boat drifted in, drew along

side the pier.Bruckm ann turned to Tonia.

“Come!”At th a t instan t, she saw half a

dozen men suddenly emerge from the cabin of the launch. Bruck- m an. seeing her eyes widen, swung round and u ttered a startled oath.

He whipped up his gun and fired one shot. Almost simultaneously, he fell to hjs knees as one of the men in the boat fired back. Then, the m an leaped up onto the pier and struck him on the head. . . .

Tonia passed the next five m in- tites in a daze. Then, she found (herself seated in the cabin of the launch . Bruckm ann lay unconscious on the floor, his wrists in handcuffs. Men were crowding in |and out of the cabin, talking excitedly.

Suddenly, s o m e o n e asked, (“ W here's Mr. K irbv?”

There was a mom ent of silence Then: “Here he is! B ruckm ann’:

shot got h im !”Tonia leaped up, cried out. She

dashed from the cabin and pushed through the men to the spot where Jim lay.

Dropping to her knees beside him, she cradled his face in her hands.

“Oh, Jim . J im !” she moaned. “Jim darling, I love you. . . .”

| ATER. a t the hospital where L they took both her and Jim. it seemed to her an eternity before she was allowed to see him. M eanwhile, she had learned, to her re lief. th a t his wound was not serious.

Then, a t last, she was standing by his bed, holding his hand.

“Jim . . .” Tears welled in hei eyes.

He smiled. “Cut it out. Tony. I ’m all right. Only a leg out of commission for a while. The im portant thing is—how are you? Gosh. I ’ve been half crazy! When I heard th a t Donovan had contacted the G-m en and told them where you were. I thought I ’d pass out from relief.” >

“Did Donovan do th a t? ” Tonia exclaimed. “Oh. good for him! I knew he wasn’t really a bad sort.”

She started to move away from the bed. but Jim pulled her back.

“Tony.” he said softly, “what was th a t you said to me on the boat?”

She lowered her eyes. “Nothing T hat is. nothing you’d w ant to hear.”

“But I do want to hear it. I want to know w hat your answer will be if I propose to you again.”

Tonia looked up. “Propose to m t again? But — but w hat about Sally?”

Jim laughed. “T h a t was just a gag. I thought tha t, if I seemed interested in Sally, you’d become interested in me. Tony . . there’s only one girl I love or ever have loved.”

“Oh. Jim . . . I ’ve been such a fool . . . such a blind fool. . . .”

AFTER tha t, there was so much to talk over. They were still at

it. when Michael and Sally were shown in.

“T ony!” Sally rushed to her ana threw her arm s around her.

Then. Michael was shaking her hand, congratulating her on her escape. She found th$,t she could look a t him now without feeling.

When Jim. too. had been felicita ted and had received his share of attention, he smilingly made an announcem ent.

“Tonia and I are going to be m arried—as soon as I get out ol the hospital.”

Sally’s eyes lit up. “Oh. Tony! I ’m so glad! I was afraid th a t— well, you see. Michael and I are going to be narried. too!”

“F ine!” Tonia smiled. “I suspected all along th a t it would turr. out th a t way when he learned the t ru th !”

Sally looked a t Michael. “Well ju st the same, he’ll have to put ui w ith my being ju st a little bit glamorous. Now th a t I ’ve learnec how. I ’m not going to stop. I refuse to revert to dowdiness ever for h im !”

“Okay by me,” said Michael slipping his arm around her.

Then. Jim said. “Mike. I supposi the newspapermen are simply clam oring to get in here to interviev Tonia.”

“Dozens of them .”•Well, let them in—Til give then

the story.”“Oh, J im !” Tonia protested. “Not

now!”“Got to keep my job, darling,’

he told her. “I ’ll have an expensivt wife to support.”

She sighed. “Well, all right, Mr Publicity Man. I m ight have knowr. th a t not even love would change you. Here we go—right back into the limelight! The masquerade ii over!”

UNIVERSITY OF HAWAII NEWS Raps Bridges Appointed. . University of Hawaii students training for certain spe

cialized professional occupations which are necessary to national defense are being urged by the government to con- inue their studies, reports Dr. David L. Crawford, president

° f the University.All s ta te and te rrito ria l d irect

o rs of the selectic Service System have been asked to notify local board to give serious consideration to the occupational deferm ent of these students, Dr. Crawford has been advised by the Am erican Council on Education.

The Office of Production M anagem ent in W ashington, D. C. has reported to the Selective Service System th a t a study by the Rpreau of L abor S tatistics shows the supply of m anpower in the professional fields of chem istry and cer? ta in engineering branches, such as civil, electrical, chemical, mining, m etallurgical, and m echanical engineering, is a t a dangerous low level. ]

“I t is necessary lh a t this level be raised by every m eans w ithin our power,” reports the Office of Production M anagement. , . thenational in te rest requires th a t s tu dents be encouraged to continue the ir education in these fields and th a t the principle of occupational deferm ent under the Selective Service program m ay be used to assure the ir fu ture availability to all activities rela ting directly or indirectly to the national defense program .”

As long as students continue to be in preparation or train ing as necessary men in these activities necessary to national defense, the Selective Service boards should give serious consideration to occupational deferm ent, the governm ent agency said.

Shortages exist in other professional occupations, the Office of Production M anagem ent revealed.I t recommended th a t consideration should be given also to students tra in ing in the following fields: ag ricu ltu ra l and san ita ry engineering, dentistry , pharm acy, physics, medicine, biology, bacteriology, and such phases of geology as geo- and cartography.physics, meteorology, hydrology,

AUTO INDUSTRY BEGINS TO USE NEW PLASTICS

NEW YORK, May 10 America’s automobile industry, first major line to feel the pinch of priorities laid down by the Office of Production Management, today is working on methods to replace strategic metals with plastics or suitable substitutes.

This problem arises a t a tim e when the industry is tu rn ing out passenger cars and trucks a t the faste st ra te in all history for thi3 tim e of year ,and a t the sam e time is producing or preparing to tu rn out vast quantities of m aterial for the defense program , including airplane engines and parts, m unitions, tanks, and power plants for navy vessels.

A nother perplexing o b s t a c l e ahead includes various refinem ents of present cars to produce the 1942 models w ithout com peting w ith the defense program ’s tooling needs.

The automobile industry is the nation’s la rgest user of all kinds of steel, malleable iron, nickel, lead, rubber, mohair, and upholstery leather. I t uses large am ounts of aluminum, tin, copper, zinc, lum ber, cotton cloth, paint, lacquer, hair and padding, and asbestos.

The OPM has asked the industry to use substitu tes for zinc, tin. nickel, aluminum, and magnesium.I t uses little of the la tte r and hence this m etal presents no problem, I t is expected zinc used in ornam ental grilles and some other parts can be replaced imm ediately by use of extruded plastics. In this category is acetate-buyrate, made by Tennessee E astm an.

Copper, lead and cadmium are mentioned as substitu tes for the valuable tin which comes to this country principally from the F ar E ast. Tungsten is being considered as a substitu te for nickel in valves.Chrome is seen as a replacem ent for nickel in some non-rusting alloys.

P lastics will replace some alum inum but here a problem is p resented especially for the aluminum used in pistons and heads. This is not considered insurm ountable.

PUBLIC IS REQUESTED TO COOPERATE TO MAKE IT

A SUCCESS

Hilton C. Walters, acting chairman of the County of Hawaii blackout committee, in requesting the public’s full support in making this year’s blackout

the best so fa r , issued countless copies of the following citations and had them distributed th roughout the island.

New member of Joint Permanent Canada-U. S. D efense Commission is this appointee from Cana3a7 Brigadier Maurice A. Pope. He is former director of military intelligence for Canadian Army and recently, returned from England.

Duties of Each Individual Citizena. Remember the date of the

PAU SIGNALA t approxim ately 9:25 the flash

“All C lear” will be given through radio to tu rn on the lights. Air-

planes will also signal to light up by dropping parachute flares signifying the end of the exercise.

Your splendid cooperation in this m a tte r will be g rea tly appreciated.

E xperts visualize use of more and more p lastics by the m otor car industry which already uses these developments of chem istry in fa ir quantity. Some who look fa r into the fu tu re visualize use of plastic instead of steel and wood for the automobile body.

H enry Ford has announced a car having a body composed entirely o f a plastic fiber w ith the exception of a tubu lar welded steel fram e. A plastic car such as Ford visions won’t need pain t and will be one-half as light as steel, while able to w ithstand a blow 10 tim es g rea ter than steel w ithout denting.

A nother product mentioned for a plastic automobile body is U. S. Plywood Corporation’s weldwood. This consists of lam inated wood bound together w ith synthetic resins under hea t and pressure. E xperim ents are reported under way on this m ateria l for automobiles. I t already is being used for a irplane fuselages and fo r m any ty pes of boats. Engineers say it can Stand a harder im pact than steel and also is much lighter.

Use of plastics, say engineers, would eliminate costly dies which would be especially desirable a t this tim e when the automobile in dustry is pledged to subordinate forw ard die and tool program s when necessary to expedite defense production.

The automobile industry continues to look into the fu tu re regard less of the w ar economy. I ts experts see need of m any new devices. Research A dvisory Service lists some of these as:

A car which could be sold for $200 and simply be “tran sp o rta tion” ; development and perfection of a rea r engine automobile; a device to stop skidding the in stan t the car gets out of line; a device for m aking tire change easy; re moval of the menace of carbon monoxide; and development of low cost, practical air-conditioning for automobiles.

HEAD MAN IN HOMERS

E D I T O R I A L(Continued from Page One)

One arm of the Nazi attack against Suez is already on its way from the North African coast, now engaged in b itter figh ting against the British in Libya.

If American aid to the British in the Near East is to mean anything, it must arrive in Suez ports before the Germans succeed in capturing this all im portant sea route between the Mediterranean and the Red Seas. America’s determ ination to carry aid via the Red Sea to the British has been announced. Adolf Hitler, on the other hand, is trying to nullify the importance of this aid by taking the Suez a- way from the British before any large amount of American aid reaches the British in the Near East.

I t may be easily foreseen th a t should the British lose the Suez, England’s domination of the Mediterranean, now cut into two with the islands around Greece forming the division, is ju st about ended. While this race between the Nazi army and American ships to the Red Sea is in progress, H itler is also moving on Gibraltar, the stronghold tha t dominates Britain’s western gateway into the Mediterranean.

British domination of the Mediterranean seems to hinge upon how fast America’s aid comes to her in the Near East through the Red Sea. Will Uncle Sam deliver in time?

Sports Aid Axis in South America

Playing before a bumper crowd of interested fans, manager Harold “Sonny” Henderson’s HELCo’s copped the undefeated first- round championship of

the HRC senior softball league by beating K. C. L au’s Davies team 5-3 last S aturday afternoon at Mooheau P ark .

Victory was Helen’s sixth s tra ight, and defeat for Davies the ir second in six gam es giving the la tte r a tie fo r the runner-up post in the f irs t round. H arold H all’s Iron W orks crew nosed out H arold Dunn’s Amfacs 6-4 in an ex tra inning prelim inary gam e S aturday to catch up w ith Davies.

Brown, Henderson Homers The champions got going in the

opening chapter when p itcher E- noch Brown h it a long fly to left field fo r a homer. K entaro Yoko-i yam a of Davies re ta lia ted w ith a run by singling and then coming home all the w ay from f ir s t la te r on an overthrow to second. Hel- co’s came through again in the second when Sonny Henderson’s drive into deep left was turned into a homer, the le ft fielder th ink ing it a foul fly.

Continuing the ir drive for a win, Helco b a tte rs tallied twice more in the th ird to g rab a 4-1 lead which they stretched to 5-1 in the firs t half of the fifth . Davies bunched 4 h its for 2 runs a t this point, but the rem aining innings went scoreless , the gam e ending 5-3 in favor of Helco’s.

C atcher Jackson Fujii of the winners enjoyed a perfect day a t bat, banging out 3 h its in 3 t imes. M ullet H ayakaw a and Enoch Brown contributed 2 h its apiece.

H its were scattered am ong the losers, no one ge tting more than one safety, and Angel H irano’s 1 out of 2 record being best. The winners outhit the losers 10-7.

Butts Saves Game A lthough the resu lt didn’t have

any bearing on the title, the Iron W orks vs. Amfac prelim prac tic ally stole the show Saturday, as center-fielder B u tts of the form er homered in the ex tra session w ith one on to bust up the ball game. B u tts’ long drive into righ t field bounced and rolled into Ruddle service sta tion across the street.

This chance for B u tts to p u t up a sto ry book finish was made possible when Am fac tallied 2 runs a f te r 2 outs in the f i r s t of the seventh to tie Iron W orks a t 4-a.ll. Iron W orks had taken the lead a t 4-2 in the fifth inning a f te r tra i ling 1-2 up to then, and as the g a me progressed all figured th a t it would end th a t way. I t m ay be mentioned here th a t p inch-hitter “J ig g s” Chang s ta rted the Amfac rally in the seventh by singling a f te r two outs.

Roeding Sarsuelo w ith 3 out of 4, and B utts and M arian Ignacio with 2 out of 4 led the Iron W orks’ stickers, while p itcher Shigeo Abe and Babe N akam oto got 2 h its apiece for Amfac. Iron W orks out- h it Am fac 10-9.

SWIM EVENTS GIVEN HERE

With errorless support fromhis teammates, Lefty Perreira pitched flossy ball to lead Crescents, defending champions to a thrilling 1-0 victory over All-

Hawaiians in the opener of the Hilo Senior Baseball league yesterday afternoon a t the Hoolulu park. In the nightcap, M anager Nobu M aruyam a’s P ira tes won a close 4-2 victory over Shizuto Ki- yosaki’s Japanese AC.

Pitcher P erre ira was really hot on the mound for the Turks as he gave aw ay only th ree scattered bingles to shu tou t the heavy Natives’ batters. However, the hero of the defending cham ps yesterday was Baroy Bonga, slugging outfielder, who was credited w ith the only run scored when he h it a long homer into le ft field in the fifth canto.

Pirates Start EearlyScoring two runs in the opening

stanza and adding two more in the third, the P ira tes in the feature gam e of the day cinched their game in the early stages of the melee. A lthough held scoreless throughout the re s t o f the tussle, the big four runs were enough to carry the Buccos to a victory.

The Japanese AC scores came in the f irs t and ninth inning when they m anaged to push across one run each. The JA C ’s la s t inning rally was in vain as P ira tes gave aw ay but one m arker which was 2 runs short of ty ing the count.

Y esterday’s results gave Crescents and P ira tes the league leadership, both w ith one win each in one gam e played. JAC and Ha- waiians tra il w ith one defeat, respectively, in as many gam es.

Both Italy and Germany make good use of sports to appeal to youth in spreading Axis doctrines in South America. Here’s what’s happening in Argentina, for example, as revealed by R K O -l’athe news feature cameramen. Strapping youngsters shown belong to secret Jugand Youth Movement. There are 180,000 Germans and two m illion Italians in Argentina’s population of 13 million.
