DARMATTFlexible passive fire protection systems

Designs are computer generatedusing Darchem Engineering’s ownLloyd’s certified programme.

DARMATT is fully tested andcertified for use in high-risehydrocarbon fires such as denoted inthe UL1709 and BS476(Pt 20 Amendment 6487) fire testcurves. Such fires reachapproximately 1100ºC withinminutes.

DARMATT has also been successfullyexplosion tested to 1.6 baroverpressure.

Testing of the DARMATT systemhas been witnessed and approvedby Lloyd’s, and has letters ofcompliance from DNV and otherlicensing authorities.

Danger and damage fromfire at refineries, petrochemicaland offshore installationscan be minimised by efficientprotection of the systemscontrolling the plant.

Darchem Engineeringhas developed DARMATT toprovide a flexible fire protectionsystem, which can dramaticallyreduce fire loss or damage byallowing a controlled shutdownof critical facilities.

DARMATT is designed for the protectionof actuators and valves, cable routes,conduits and signal lines, junction boxes,solenoid stations, air receivers, processvessels and other equipment applicationsrequiring fire protection.

DARMATT flexible mattress systemsprovide excellent fire protection due totheir unique construction of compressedlayers of insulating fibre combined withlayers of metallic foil.

DARMATT is renowned for its durabilityat very high temperatures. TheDARMATT system is entirely asbestosfree.

Darchem Engineering has carried outextensive development work which,confirmed by test data, enablescombinations of infill material to bespecified to suit individual customerrequirements.

The specific composite for eachapplication is dependant upon the time /temperature requirements, geometry andmass of the protected equipment, andsite conditions such as ambienttemperature, fuel sources, air flow etc.

Our Lloyd’s approved Thermal TransientProgramme addresses each of thesevariables to determine the optimumsolution. The sacrificial exterior layer isweather protective, usually either vinyl-coated polyester or a coated fibreglasscloth, depending on environmental andprocess conditions.

DARMATT is ideal for all processapplications including non-petrochemical. Installation is readilyundertaken. DARMATT can be easilyremoved and re-installed duringequipment maintenance or inspectionperiods.

Inspection hatches and access areas canbe incorporated if required.

The DARMATT system is held togetherby highly flexible nylon coated stainlesssteel multi strand wire lacing that helpsto keep the jacket compact andmaintains integrity.

This fastening system has been used onall DARMATT systems supplied byDarchem to date. There have not beenany problems experienced with eitherinstallation or removal /re-installation of these systems.

The installation is described in theerection procedure supplied with eachsystem. These tailor made documentsdescribe the steps to follow forinstallation and are always adapted tothe supply and the equipment protected.

DARMATT has been in useworldwide throughout thepetrochemical industry forover 25 years.

DARMATT has been tested andaccepted by a number of major oiland petrochemical companiesincluding Exxon-Mobil, Chevron,Dupont, Texaco, Aramco, BritishPetroleum and Shell.

DARMATT is durably constructedunder strict quality controlprocedures (Darchem Engineering isBSEN 9001:2000 accredited).

The DARMATT composite oftenrecommended for petrochemicalplants provides a protection windowfrom between 15 minutes to120 minutes in a 1100 ºCHydrocarbon fire.

These approvals have given processplant operators the confidence tospecify DARMATT as an integral partof their policy to protect installationsagainst the effects of fire and blast.

Typical DARMATT installations rangefrom 15 minutes of certified fireprotection up to a full 2 hours which canbe adapted to individualproject/customer requirements.

Each Darmatt PFP system is specificallyengineered to fit closely around theprotected equipment providing aremovable, compact and user friendlyenclosure. The Darmatt PFP system isconstructed from pre-shaped panelsdesigned to fit together around theequipment to be protected.

The versatility of DARMATT isdemonstrated by a wide variety ofapplications on petrochemical plants.

The Darmatt PFP (Passive FireProtection) System has beensupplied extensively to the Oiland Gas Industry for bothonshore and offshoreapplications. It is designed andmanufactured as a removable,compact, flexible system, whichhas been tested and certified toprovide protection againsthydrocarbon fires.

DARMATT J120 is based on thecompany’s standard Darmatt flexiblemattress system widely developed over20 years in the petrochemical, offshoreand power generation markets for theprotection of power and signal cables,valves, actuators, vessels, pipework andother safety critical equipment.

DARMATT J120 is a flexible compositemattress system constructed with both avarying number of layers and density ofinsulating fibres. An outer layer ofstainless steel mesh is fitted that servesto protect against the effects ofhydrocarbon jet fire.

The DARMATT J120 PFP (Passive FireProtection) System has been suppliedextensively to the oil and gas industryfor both onshore and offshoreapplications. It has been tested andcertified to provide protectionagainst hydrocarbon jet fire and blastconditions.

The DARMATT J120 compositeoften recommended forpetrochemical plants provides aprotection window from between15 minutes to 120 minutes in a jetfire up to 1300ºC.

DARMATT J120 has beenspecifically developed to satisfyrequirements for a flexiblepassive fire protection systemto withstand jet fire and blastoverpressure conditions. Theincreasingly onerous conditionsthat fire protection is nowrequired to meet has led to thedevelopment of versions ofDARMATT J120 that canwithstand jet fires and greaterblast overpressure.

DARSHIELD engineered enclosurescan provide this protection asthey are designed and manufacturedspecifically to fit the protectedequipment. The design principles usedhave been validated by extensive testprogrammes. They give up to 2 hoursprotection against flame temperaturesin excess of 1100ºC. Features can beincorporated into the design to provideresistance to both blast and jet fire.

DARSHIELD

The main features of theDARSHIELD system are :

• Lightweight for ease of handling andtotally removable

• No deterioration of performancethroughout intended life span even in hostile environments

• High resistance to corrosion andvibration.

Special features e.g. hinged doors, canbe incorporated to give direct access tothe protected equipment.The material of the outer skin is stainlesssteel which will not be affected bytemporary exposure to petroleumproducts, sub zero ambient conditions orultra-violet irradiation by sunlight. Noneof the materials of construction areflammable. No maintenance of theDARSHIELD is required.

DARSHIELD can be easily removed andre-installed during equipmentmaintenance or inspection periods.

Thermal performance is predicted byfully approved computer modellingtechniques.

The DARSHIELD system has beenapproved by Lloyd’s, and has lettersof compliance from DNV and otherspecialist authorities. Theseapprovals have given process plantoperators the confidence to specifyDarshield as an integral part of theirpolicy to protect installations againstthe effects of fire and blast.

Durable construction under strictquality control procedures (DarchemEngineering is BSEN ISO 9001:2000accredited).

Fire and explosion is a majorcause of concern to refinery,gas processing, petrochemicaland offshore installations.Danger and damage fromfire can be minimised by theefficient and effectiveprotection of the systems,which control the plant.

There are many advantages ofthe DARSHIELD system.Independent tests have beencarried out on DARSHIELDenclosures, which confirm theirability to:

• Withstand a standard hydrocarbon pool fire withtemperatures in excess of1100ºC

• Control the temperature riseof the protected equipment

• Provide protection for up to120 minutes

• Withstand jet fire up to1300ºC

• Withstand blast overpressure. DARSHIELD enclosures are designed towithstand the most rigorous fireconditions. They are ideal for theprotection of equipment requiring easeof access. The enclosures are constructedusing high thermal performancematerials encapsulated within stainlesssteel skins.

The versatility of the DARSHIELD systemenables a variety of materials to beselected in order to best meet thecustomer specification. This ensures thatthe design can accommodate difficultiesin location and space restrictions.

The design of RADIANTHEATSHIELDS will vary fromapplication to applicationrelative to the incidental heatfluxes to the shielding and theamount of heat reductionrequired.

Darchem Engineering has acontinuous programme ofresearch and development ofRADIANT HEATSHIELDS for useon both onshore and offshoreinstallations. The use of boththe CHEVRON and RADIANTHEATSHIELD have a number ofdistinct advantages over otherradiation shield systems.

RADIANT HEATSHIELDSHeat flux reduction solutions

Darchem Engineering hasdeveloped two main shieldproduct designs:

• DARMET CHEVRON SYSTEM

• DARMET RADIANTHEATSHIELD SYSTEM

Darchem’s range of heatshield systemsare now well proven. The unique allmetallic system utilises the effects of airflow to cool the shield and gives a heatflux reduction during flaring conditions.

The unique design features of theDARMET RADIANT HEATSHIELDensures that heat is reflected whilecooler air is drawn from the underside ofthe shield creating a ‘steady state’situation, usually less than 100ºC.

DARMET RADIANT HEATSHIELDINGis adaptable in design and has thecapability to incorporate cut outs forpenetrations, lugs for temporaryhandrailing and weight bearing pads forplant maintenance requirements.

DARMET RADIANT HEATSHIELDINGhas been successfully installed on manyplatforms Worldwide. The shieldswithstand elevated temperatures fromflare stacks and can tolerate this severethermal cycling without detriment tothermal performance and durability.

DARMET CHEVRON SYSTEMhas been developed for higherheat flux levels and is generallyused for horizontal heatshieldslocated directly below theflare tip.This is a panel design that allowsconvective airflow inside the panels.The Darmet Chevron RadiationShielding is normally designed so that thesurface temperature of the underlyingstructural steelwork remains under 100°Cduring flaring.This is to ensure that thesteelwork is not damaged as a result ofexposure to severe thermal cycling effects.

Each panel generally consists offabricated perimeter members with aload supporting grating fixed to thetop “hot exposed” surface of the panel.

Formed thin sheet foils provide acontoured surface designed to promotecold air convection up through the panelto the hot face. The cold face of the panelis supported by a simple expandedmetal mesh arrangement to maintain the foils in place.

All Darchem Engineering RadiationShields are supplied as individual panelsfor modular installation. The panels aredesigned so that when installed, therewill be sufficient gap to allow forexpansion and shrinkage during thermalcycling and are designed to preventinternal panel stressing or buckling. Thetop grating (if required) is attached tothe panel in such a manner as to allowindividual expansion of the sections andavoid buckling or warping. The panelsand fixings are designed to withstandthe effects of the environmental loads.

In addition to this, certain panels will bedesigned to withstand a maximumimposed distributed load on any singlepanel in any location as specified by thecustomer. The panels fixings aredesigned so that they are welded to thestructural steelwork with a flat retainingplate which screws into position.

The panels and fixings are designed towithstand the effects of wind, snow andice loads in addition to a maximumimposed distributed load specified by thecustomer.

DARMET RADIANT HEATSHIELDS are:• Durable and have been

installed for more than 20 yearswithout deterioration

• Lightweight• Maintenance free• Corrosion resistant (high alloy)• Self draining• Impervious to effects of weather• Suited for intermittent and severe

thermal cycling conditions.

The fixings also provide for minimumnecessary movement during thermalcycling (to avoid buckling and warping)while at the same time holding eachpanel in place to the supportingstructure. Hatchways can be providedwith hinged access doors secured withshoot bolts on the underside. Handgripscan be provided to raise the doors openand hinges can be welded to bearer barson the doors and the shield panels.

Each panel generally consists of achannel frame to which either 1 or 2layers of woven wire mesh or expandedmetal is attached across the frame. Withthis type of shield a 75% reduction inirradiance can be achieved. The system isdesigned to be entirely maintenancefree during the projected life of theplatform even when subjected tothermal cycling from the operation flaresand extreme environmental conditions.

Heat Dissipation - RADIANTHEATSHIELDS have a greater heatdissipation than solid systems therefore asolid plate barrier would usually have agreater ‘touch’ surface temperature thana woven wire/expanded metal barrier.

See-through/Venting - DarchemEngineering’s RADIANT HEATSHIELDShave excellent see-through propertiesand are naturally venting. Solid systembarriers would prevent natural lightingand could trap gas, which may permeatefrom the adjacent process plant. Thepsychological effect of closing in the areaunder protection could be problematicunder operating conditions.

The RADIANT HEATSHIELDsystem was developed for lowerheat flux levels.

This system can be used also as ahorizontal heatshield directly below theflare tip, but is more commonly used forvertical heatshield protecting criticalplant equipment, steelwork andprotecting personnel.

DARMETAll metallic insulation systems for nuclear applications

There are a number of principlefeatures of DARMET, whichprovide it with an overallsuperiority to conventionalfibrous insulation materials.

Removability and ReplacementBeing an engineered system, the ease ofremovability and replacement ofDARMET can be varied in accordancewith the requirements of a particularapplication. Therefore, for in serviceinspection or maintenance, the panelscan be designed so that they can beremoved in less than a minute. This rapidoperation reduces radiation exposuretimes, reduces labour and material costsand down time of equipment.

DARMET does not become radioactivewhen irradiated, making disposal easierat the end of the plants life.

Corrosion ResistanceThe DARMET system is generallyconstructed from austenitic stainlesssteel. Darchem Engineering has notencountered any situation where it hascorroded in nuclear environments.DARMET has been installed for morethan 30 years in some plants.

DARMET does not contain anychloride ions and therefore does notinitiate stress corrosion cracking.As DARMET is self-draining it does notmaintain water in contact with pipes and therefore does not promote oxidationcorrosion cells.

No Health RiskDarmet all-metallic insulation contains nofibres and therefore does not contributeto the risks associated with the ingestionof contaminated airborne particles bymaintenance personnel. Within somecountries fibrous insulation materials areconsidered to be a class 2 carcinogen.

DrainabilityThe exterior of DARMET iswater shedding. It is self-draining.Its thermal performance is thereforeunaffected by water and does not holdchloride in contact with the pipework,unlike Fibrous insulation which quicklyslumps when wetted.

DARMET can be decontaminated ifrequired. The self-draining all-metallicinsulation can be washed down toremove any surface contaminationand compared to fibrous solutions, offersease in maintenance, removaland refitting.

Darchem has developedDARMET: an all-metallicinsulation system designed tocontrol the heat loss andtemperature gradients onprimary circuit vessels andassociated equipment andpipework.

DARMET is currently installedin over 120 nuclear powerplants worldwide.

DARMET is a fully engineered allmetallic construction in austeniticstainless steel with excellent performancecharacteristics.

Reduced heat losses, lower containmentair temperatures and fewer equipmentoperational difficulties are the hallmarksof its capability.

DARMET offers multi-functionalcapability in its thermal performance,strength and structural aspects,removability features and through-lifedurability without environmental orHealth and Safety problems.

Testing, Certification andDevelopment

Practical ‘in-service’ experience iscomplemented by a comprehensivelaboratory test programme.

An ongoing programme of productdevelopment ensures the Darmetcontinues to be the most “userfriendly” thermal insulation systemavailable.

Extensive test programmes havebeen carried out including:• Thermal performance on

representative large scale vesselareas.

• Thermal performance of large andsmall bore pipework in variousorientations.

• Mechanical shock up to 300g.• Measurement of effect on thermal

performance of ageing andcontamination.

• Panel robustness.• Drainage and water spray.• Seismic accelerations up to 5G.

PerformanceDARMET designed panels provide asclose a fit as possible to the pipe orvessel being insulated. This means thaton vertical risers the design severelyrestricts any “chimney effect” convectionin the air gap between the pipe surfaceand the inner skin.

DARMET is an assembly of thin gaugestainless steel foils in factory madecassettes, which have been specificallydesigned to minimise heat loss thatoccurs through conduction, convectionand radiation.

DARMET works by:Creating pockets of air between thealternate layers of dimple foil. The designensures that this air is kept stagnant,thus reducing heat loss by convection.

The design of the foils reduceconduction by creating the longestpossible heat paths. The layers of highlypolished stainless steel foil reflect backradiated heat.

DARMET all metallic insulation systemsare neat, compact and clean in the mostcomplex of arrangements.

Reactor Pressure Vessel insulation withDARMET is designed and fitted prior tovessel installation to provide long-lifeperformance without deterioration.

DARMET SMRI providesintegral radiation protectionwith engineered insulation. Theproduct is a development ofthe well proven DARMET allmetallic stainless steel thermalinsulation system alsoproduced by Darchem. DARMETis currently installed in over120 Nuclear power plantsWorldwide.

DARMETShielded metallic reflective insulation

This product is installed where therequirement for LOCA (Loss of CoolantAccident) is not as stringent. The form ofinsulation varies from Mineral Wool tohigh performance insulations likemicroporous insulation. The insulation isencapsulated by thin gauge austeniticstainless steel, which provides simpleinstallation and removablitycharacteristics.

Encapsulated fibre insulation

DARMET ENCAPSULATED ThermalInsulation System is specificallydesigned to minimise heat loss invarious applications.

Each application is designed to suit thecustomer specification with respect tothermal and mechanical requirements.All infill materials are compliant withUSNRG1.36.

Reduction in TimeThe introduction of DARMET SMRIsignificantly impacts the access timefor maintenance and operational staff bypermanently reducing radiationlevels. Previously declared “restricted”levels can become readily accessiblethus improving quality time withincontainment, saving at least 25-50% ofdosage pick up time.

Radiation ReductionThe amount of radiation reductionis based on the thickness of lead usedand on the time required to carry outspecific maintenance operations.

DARMET SMRI can reduce highradiation emission areas to loweracceptable levels.

Dose ReductionSite Feedback from operationalplants with DARMET SMRI fittedhas shown that the dosage pick up canbe reduced by 50%.

DARMATT KM1 is a fireprotection barrier systemdeveloped for the protection ofsafety and critical electricalequipment in the nuclearindustry.

The system has successfully passed 1 and3 hour fire tests in a wide range ofboundary and site specificconfigurations. Boundary conditionsinclude zero percent cable fill as well asfree fall single and grouped cables. Firetests are fully compliant with NRCGeneric Letter 86-10, Supplement 1, andinclude configurations for both upgradesof existing systems as well as newapplications.

The system is based on a patented semi-rigid board, made of ceramic fibre sheetscontaining a strongly endothermicmaterial which absorbs heat during afire, creating an effective delay to theheat transfer mechanism.

The system has been designed for easeof installation and for future removal andreplacement. Site installation is carriedout using a kit of parts customfabricated by Darchem from site surveyinformation. The installed system isdurable, weather proof and aestheticallyappealing.
