2010 Outstanding Alumni Honorees (selected by the Danville Community College Alumni Council)

The Alumni PledgeI am a graduate of Danville Community College. I have achieved graduation through my own hard work and dedication and the support of my family, friends, and faculty. I am now a member of the Danville Community College Alumni Association. In this capacity, I have earned the privilege of a mutually beneficial and lasting relationship with the college and its community. Today, I move forward to embrace new opportunities and to meet the challenges that lie ahead. But as I do, I also recognize that my Danville Community College experience will remain forever an important part of my life. The opportunity of a Danville Community College education confers upon me a responsibility to help ensure the continued strength of this great institution. I will not forget this responsibility. I am a graduate of Danville Community College.

James (Mack) Doss - Danville technical Institute Doss has been involved with finance and local governmental operations with First Virginia Bank South for 11 years and most recently as director of Customer Services for the City of Danville Utilities. Upon retirement, he began working at Norris Funeral Home, where he serves as office manager and funeral assistant. In the community, he has been a volunteer with the American Cancer Society, board member of the Danville Cancer Society, volunteer for the March of Dimes, member of the Riverview Rotary Club, member of the Mount Hermon Baptist Church, and board member of the Pittsylvania County Historical Society. Throughout the years, Doss has been a friend of the college, serving on the DCC Foundation Board and recently joining the Alumni Council. He works tirelessly promoting the College and working on Foundation initiatives. Both of

his children are DCC alumni, making a fitting tribute to Doss’s continued belief in the College and its mission.

Ray S. Robinson - vPI-Danville Robinson has taught high school English and mentored both students and beginning teachers for most of his career. Before his retirement from George Washington High School, he led the English department as chairman for over 10 years and earlier taught at Dan River High School.. He is a consummate writer and served as an editor of The History of Danville Community College: A Link to the Past, A Bridge to the Future and as a researcher and editor the History of First Baptist Church. He is a member of First Baptist Church, having served as head of deacons, president of the Danville Education Association and vice president of the Danville Museum of Fine Arts and History.

Shelby J. Irving - Danville Community College Irving in 1987 became the first female firefighter hired by the Danville Fire Department. Today, she has risen through the ranks of the department and now serves as Danville’s Fire Marshall. She was honored as Outstanding Young Firefighter in 1996, and as Firefighter of the Year in 2006. Although she had already received her bachelor’s degree in 1984 from Ferrum College, where she played basketball and softball, she was encouraged to enroll in the Fire Science program. In the community, Irving coached basketball at Averett University and assisted with recreational activities for the City of Danville Parks and Recreation Department. She also is a volunteer with Habitat for Humanity, the treasurer and Financial Secretary, as well as Youth Co-Advisor at Jones Chapel Baptist Church for the past 15 years, member of Ferrum’s Alumni Board, and member of DCC’s Alumni

Council. She is currently in the Leadership Southside Class and regularly hosts a local television show, “Fire Watch”, on Comcast Cable Channel 20.

Steven k. Jones - Danville Community College In 1980, Jones enrolled at DCC after having worked in Dan River Inc., and in Richmond, where he managed a sporting goods store. After receiving associate degrees in both engineering and business administration from DCC in 1982, he transferred to Louisiana State University and earned a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering. He was employed for 11 years as an electronics engineer with ITT Research Institute in Annapolis, MD, where he was responsible as a team member of engineers for development and deployment of a nationwide network of 148 NEXRAD Dopplar weather radars. In 1996, he earned a master’s degree from Johns Hopkins University and accepted a civil service appointment to the National Telecommunications and Information Administration within the U.S. Commerce Department. There he headed a project associated with the

modernization of the Global Positioning System (GPS). In 1998, he was awarded the Department of Commerce Silver Medal Award and in 2000, he was named by the Department of State as a member of the U. S. delegation to the International Telecommunication Union (a United Nations agency). He has also been involved in introducing ultra-wideband communications, ground penetrating and through-the-wall radar systems, satellite digital audio radio (Sirius and XM radio) and new airport security portals utilizing radar technology.

Graduation TraditionsAcademic Procession and Regalia

The academic procession is steeped in a long tradition dating back to the Middle Ages when students and scholars marched in ceremonies whenever a student accomplished his course of study. Traditionally, the graduation marshal is the most senior member of the faculty. Today, we have only one ceremony for graduates, but we wear regalia similar to those worn in the Middle Ages. Professors and students studied in poorly heated buildings, so long, warm robes and hoods were very useful. The distinctive hoods and doctoral robes were used to set the faculty apart from the students. These were worn every day at most colleges and universities until the 1860s.

Traditionally, undergraduates wear only the black robes. Bachelor’s and master’s hoods have the colors of the university which awarded the degree on the inside. The color border which represents the teaching field is around the edge of the hood. The bachelor’s and master’s hoods are similar except the master’s sleeves are fuller. The doctoral hoods are longer and the bands of colors wider. The doctoral robes may be black or a color that the university designates. The robes also have velvet in the front from hem to neck, and three bands of velvet on the sleeves -- the velvet bands are in the color of the teaching field or may be black. Certain universities use a tam instead of the traditional mortarboard, but all people with doctorates wear a gold tassel.

Faculty marshals traditionally wear a sash to distinguish them from the rest of the participants.

Colors of Teaching Fields

The MaceThe mace of silver and walnut has its history in antiquity, first as a weapon, then as a symbol of royalty and a sign of

authority. The mace, a club-like staff, is now traditionally carried by the Faculty Marshal as a symbol of the professor’s role and preeminence at modern institutions of higher education. The mace recognizes DCC’s beginnings, as Danville Textile School, Danville Technical Institute and the Danville Branch of Virginia Tech -- these names are inscribed on the bands. The silver figure at the top carries the torch of knowledge.

The mace is to be carried by the Faculty Marshal at each ceremony in which academic regalia is present.
