PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS
Was the winner of the Prudential Spirit of the Community Award in 2005 for organizing a successful fundraiser for
the Boulder Homeless Shelter called “Pancakes in the Park,” which took place at the Boulder Band Shell & included
a breakfast, silent auction, raffle & live performances by the Wendy Woo Band and Liza Oxnard Trio. Was featured
on KBCO & funded entirely by donation.
Worked for over 6 months on research for an article examining issues on Skid Row in LA. Topics I explored
included: The exhaustive work of Skid Row non-profits; the Safer Cities Initiative’s effect on the revolving door of
Skid Row; the power of art and music to help homeless overcome struggles; community enabling vs. helpful charity;
and the fellowship among Skid Row dwellers. Interviewed Pulitzer-prize winning, LA Times journalist Steve Lopez,
did a police ride along with Skid Row police officers and spent the night on the roof of the Union Rescue Mission.
