Everything Is Energy a conversation with DanielCavanagh of AnathemaPosted on February 14, 2012

    - Daniel Cavanagh

Anathema , out of the United Kingdom, epitomizes the concept of spiritual evolution to me, ofconstantly learning and growing. They began back in 1990 as pioneers of a metal style that containedmelancholic elements. Their uniqueness and originality that was evident in the beginning (only ahandful of bands were doing stuff like that at the time) became a fearless approach to progressing theirsongwriting and their sound. Theyre very honest songwriters, covering the light and dark in life, and itis clear that some of Anathemas songs address raising consciousness to heal the self the innerstruggle and loving through it allhigher states that can be accessed through music.

Theyre passionate and intense, both on stage and on their records; oftentimes, their music h as movedme to tears and taken me deeper into my own healing.

This, of course, is my interpretation of their music; this is where I choose to meet it, and as DanielCavanagh, guitarist and one of the songwriting team, says: Songs may start personal, but then again, theyre not personal because you give them to everybody and they make their own interpretations.

Thats the moment when the personal dissolves and the universal takes over, the place where everyonehas the opportunity to truly connect.

Heather : Anathemas music is so universally spiritual, and it speaks to me on such a deep level, becauseits what I believe

positive now. And personally, this is something I struggle with. I came from such a dark past and havecome to a place of healing and light, but I realize the darkness is part of the light. What do you think?

Dan : Well, its only when you come through the valley of death that you can see the clouds at the endof it. You know, I went through many, many years of hardship to get through to my awakening in 2005,

but prior to that I had a pretty f**king difficult life. The music helps to heal these things. I think themany years of hardships, in a way, have brought me through to being in a place thats a little bit morepositive.

Heather : The dark and the light, its such a delicate balance, in that we cannot know one without theother. Can you speak more about that and the evolution of Anathemas music?

Dan : In our evolution, all we ever did was remain true to ourselvesbeing the kind of band we wantedto be, writing songs and learning and progressing over the years. Originally, much was owed to formermembers Darren White for focus and Duncan Patterson for songwriting. These two had a big impact;though the band now is most definitely who we are now. We were always open and couldnt remain astrictly metal band in the end. It grew. I do think were as intense as a lot of metal bands out therenow. We do it in a different way. We use piano, string orchestra and electronics, as well as huge, goldenguitar tones. We have three singers and paint the sound with many colors.

Heather : You said you had an awakening in 2005. What lead you to that, what did the awakeningmean, and how did it effect the music?

Dan : Well, I think Ive always been a spiritual person since I was a young lad, though I had been a littlein and out of it over the years. What happened was I went to see a person who helps people deal withletting go of the past, and during this really wonderful series of meetings, which involved deepmeditations and visualizations, I experienced a deeply profound opening of the mind and a state ofconsciousness of such incredible peace that I had to learn about it afterwards. Through this openingup and learning came a new way of being and an intensity in the songwriting progress, and a wish totransmit this incredibly beautiful feeling to othersthrough music.

Thats what this is all about for me, reality of pure consciousness and pure love. And its all combinedwith expanding your mental health and your physical health and it all leads to a path. For me, God is

just an overused word; what I consider this to be is energypuritya higher dimensionand, ultimately, us merging into that sea of consciousness.

Heather : And music definitely has an energy. I read somewhere that a musical note goes on forever, even though we stop hearing it, and Ive felt this in my own life. Can you speak to that?

Dan : When Pam Reynolds had a very well-known near-death experience some years ago, whichhappened under medical conditions whilst being monitored in many ways, she came back with manyinsights into life. One of the insights she had was to sense that we, as individual human beings andenergy, are akin to mu sical notes. And the beautiful meaning of our lives is to sing our own note withclarity and love and to create harmony with others, wherever possible. I think this analogy is beautifuland it takes a glimpse of the higher states to sense this truth for yourself.

Its important to sense and create this harmony within and without. Sometimes, one must switch offa little to the cacophony of deception in certain elements of politics, in the media, and in thedomineering will or hurtful energies of others.

And when one loses ones own voice, remember that it can never be truly lost. The rainbow light ofpure sound and beauty is who you are, no matter what layers are placed on top of it, masking its purity, masking your inner light.

You cant ever lose who you are.

Sing your own note. Sing it higher. Hear those around you.

We are a rainbow of endless hues of color; we are a symphony of incredible beauty and harmony.

Listen to the sound of the rainbow.

Insightful, beautiful words from Daniel Cavanagh. Anathemas music paints that picture that we are allconnected. We are all one.

From Anathemas song, Everything I used to keep my heart in jail, but the choice was love or fear

of pain. And I chose love. Everything is energy, and energy is you and me. And may the journey of love and light continue.
