Dane G. Hansen Scout Reservation “Celebrating 46 years of Scouting”

Dear Scoutmasters and troop leaders:

Scouting is a series of building blocks that enables a Scout to accomplish one skill at a time,

constantly building his confidence in his abilities until his character is structured. Scouting is also a

series of pride circles for you as you observe with joy a Scout’s accomplishments while under your

guidance. Lord Baden-Powell stated that the true measure of the success of a summer camp program is

whether it enables a Troop to stand on its own using boy leadership.

Camp activities such as merit badge classes, vesper services, hiking trails and campfires are only

resources in pursuit of Scouting’s real aims: Character Development, Physical Fitness, and Citizenship.

These three aims are the basis of Scouting’s mission, and our objective at Camp Hansen is to do

everything we can to help make your Troop even stronger as a result of our 2011 Coronado Area

Council Boy Scout Resident Camp Program. We welcome you to camp and look forward to sharing the

Summer Camp experience with you and your Scouts.

Sincerely,

Camp Director & Your Camp Hansen Staff

Coronado Area Council, B.S.A.

“Scouting is three-quarters -outing”

Council Camperships: It’s important that all scouts have an opportunity to attend Resident Camp with their unit. Each troop committee has a responsibility to make opportunities available to scouts so that they can earn money to be applied toward their Resident Camp fee. An excellent opportunity for the unit to raise funds that may be put aside for camp fees is the fall popcorn sale. When a family’s finances and troop earning opportunities cannot provide sufficient funds to cover the fee, the Coronado Area Council makes camperships available to help these scouts attend Camp Hansen. Troop committee’s nominate scouts for the financial assistance by submitting a “Nomination for Camperships” form (see Leaders Form Guide) to be received by the Council Service Center not later than Thursday, March 24, 2011. Nominations received after Thursday, March 24, 2011 either will not be considered or considered as remaining funds allow. Please make it a point to know your fifth grade Webelos early and make parents aware of applying for camperships. The “Campership Form” needs to be filled out in its entirety to be considered for funds. The Scout Office will notify nominees and Scoutmasters Saturday, April 9, 2011.

ALL INFORMATION WILL BE HELD IN STRICT CONFIDENCE

Tent Rental Form: Approximately 100 tents are available on first come, first serve basis. Mail the tent rental form (see Leaders Form Guide) to the Camp Ranger. The rental fee is $10 per tent. IMPORTANT: Tent fees are payable only at camp because of availability.

NOTE: There are no provisions for family camping at Camp Hansen. No family members or guests can stay overnight unless they are registered Boy Scouts or Adult Leaders and serving as adult leader for your troop. There are no public campgrounds nearby. Phillipsburg is about 20 miles to the northwest and has motels. There is a campground / RV park in Kirwin (for reservations contact Dan at 785-543-8681). Campsites: The Coronado Area Council reserves the right to combine two or more troops to meet the optimum number of scouts for that campsite capacity. The Camp Staff is unable to provide two deep leadership. This includes Golden Eagle Ceremonies. You are responsible for the two deep leadership for your boys in your campsite. Advancement Packets: Troop checkout packets containing merit badge cards, certificates, awards, etc. will be available Friday after the campfire. Leaders should review their troop packet to resolve issues before leaving camp.

MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS & POLICIES All persons attending camp must use the BSA Medical Form provided Scoutmasters and signed by an appropriate licensed medical practitioner. It is recommended that the troop leader collect medical forms before arriving at camp and check to see that they are properly filled out with signatures and discuss with the parent/guardian any medical concerns. It is also recommended that the parent/guardian make a copy to keep at home. All medical forms, youth and adult, will be retained on file in the Health Lodge. Medical forms are available at no cost at the Scout Service Center and are online. The Health Officer will check to see that medical forms are current and signed when the troop signs into camp. The Health Officer will issue buddy tags for swimming to those campers with properly signed health forms. The Health Officer will also check COPE and Climbing/Rappelling class rosters and approved participants. Scout and adults staying in camp more than 72 consecutive hours, (parts A, B, and C need to be completed), are required to have had a medical examination within the last 12 months. Scout and adults staying in camp for less than 72 hours, Parts A and C are to be completed. The Health and Medical Form must be on file with the Health Officer. Scouts and leaders with RISK FACTORS may not be issued a buddy tag for aquatics or allowed to participate in COPE/Climbing activities. Soon after arrival in camp, each camper will receive a medical screening. Any scout or leader currently under a doctor’s care is required to notify the Health Officer regarding the ailment and should provide a written course of treatment by the physician. All prescribed medications will be turned over to the Health Officer who will provide locked storage and refrigeration if necessary (inhalers, bee sting kits and nitro tablets will be an exception).

Prescription drugs must be in the original bottle that lists the medication, doctor’s orders, dosage, and doctor’s name. If the parent wants to put medication in a daily dispenser, the parent must still have the scout bring the original bottle that lists the dosage and doctor’s name with at least one pill still in the bottle for the Camp Health Officer to use as a reference. Health Lodge and Emergencies: We maintain a Health Lodge at camp, staffed full time by a certified first aid provider. It is the Health Officer’s responsibility to determine if an injury is more serious than normal first aid and requires medical attention. Special arrangements have been made with the Phillips County Hospital to treat any such injuries or illness. The camp reserves the right to send a scout/leader to a hospital for diagnosis and subsequent treatment. Whenever possible, a reasonable effort will be made to notify a parent or guardian before such action is taken. Scouts Taking Medication: The Health Officer will notify leaders of scouts in their troops taking medications. It is the responsibility of the troop leader to see that the scout takes the medication at the Health Lodge. 2011 Health and Medical Record Form: The new Health and Medical form can be found in the Leaders Form Guide. This will be the only recognized Health and Medical Form recognized by the Health Officer at Camp Hansen. This form is to be filled out in its entirety and signed by the Scoutmaster, parents/legal guardian, and physician. Health and Medical Forms / Requirements: The new Health and Medical Form is for scouts and all adults. An instructional page accompanies the new form. This form will be used for all physicals scheduled in 2011 and thereafter. NOTE: School physicals and/or school physical forms are not acceptable Boy Scout Resident Camp physicals (form). PLEASE, do not attach a school physical (form) to the 2011 Health and Medical Record Form.

Departure from Camp: Scouts and leaders must notify the Camp Director if they are going to check out of camp. Any scout that needs to leave camp during the week must have the “Youth Leaving Camp Early” form filled out and signed by the parent(s) and/or guardian, and the Scoutmaster and Camp Director prior to leaving camp. The scout’s leader is considered the guardian of a youth with the responsibility of knowing who the youth can leave camp with. Leaders may use the camp phone to call a scout’s parents. Liquid Propane/Fueled Lanterns and Stoves: We follow the BSA policy for handling this equipment and fuels. The Camp provides a storage facility for extra liquid fuels and gases to adhere to those policies. Check the Guide to Safe Scouting for BSA policies. http://www.scouting.org/nav/enter.jsps=xx&c=xm This will take you to the BSA site map; click on Guide to Safe Scouting. Camp Mail: A mailbox for outgoing mail is located in the Trading Post. Normally mail is delivered and retrieved daily from the Post Office in Kirwin, Kansas. Stamps and writing materials are available from the Trading Post. The mailing address for Camp Hansen is: Scout’s Name Troop Number Dane G. Hansen Scout Reservation P.O. Box 122 Kirwin, Kansas 67644 Campsite Inspections: Each campsite should be inspected daily by the troop’s own leadership. Adult leaders will be asked and encouraged to conduct campsite inspections at least twice during the week using the form that will be provided at camp. Winning campsites will receive special recognition at the Friday campfire. Patrol Organizations: Resident Camp is the highlight of the Scouting Year. It is vitally important that all members of the troop are encouraged to attend camp. A special effort should be made to encourage key boy leaders to attend. Summer Camp is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for the Senior Patrol Leader and his Patrol Leaders Council to function 24 hours a day. Keep natural patrols together as much as possible at camp and use your regular patrol organization (“Boy Leadership”). When “Boy Leadership” develops in your troop, your job becomes easier and camp much more enjoyable for all.

Adult Leadership: It is the policy of the Boy Scouts of America that one adult alone may never lead outings. There must be a minimum of two adult leaders with each unit attending camp. The unit leader or anyone serving as a unit leader must be at least 21 years of age and a registered member of the Boy Scouts of America. The second adult may be a registered adult scout leader 18 years of age or older, and/or a parent of a participating youth member. It is the responsibility of the Chartered Organization and Unit Committee to ensure that two deep adult leadership is provided on all unit activities. Leaders may rotate in and out of camp as long as the “two deep leadership” requirement is met 24 hours a day during the Troop’s entire stay in camp. Having at least one registered leader spend the entire week at camp is desirable because it provides continuity for the scouts. Commissioner Service: The Camp Commissioner’s role is similar to that of the Unit Commissioner back home. “He will not take over for you”. He will make himself available to assist and support you in every way. Along with your Troop Guide he will assist in making your camping experience at Camp Hansen a successful one by ensuring that you are fully aware of what programs and training are available to you and your scouts. Commissioners (and Troop Guides) will also help resolve issues or answer questions that may arise throughout the week. Remember, however, that with good advance planning you are in the best position to ensure that your troop is prepared for a successful camp experience. Fireworks, Firearms, Archery Equipment, Ammo, & Bicycles: Privately owned firearms, archery equipment, ammunition and explosives (including fireworks) of any type are strictly prohibited in camp. Any firearms, etc. needed are supplied by the camp. Bicycles are prohibited. Alcoholic Beverages: Possession of alcoholic beverages in camp by anyone is strictly prohibited. Violators of this directive will be asked to leave camp immediately. If the violator is a scout, their Scoutmaster and parent/guardian will be contacted to arrange for transportation home. If it is a leader, their Charter Partner Organization will be notified. Vehicles and Trailers: Only leaders should bring vehicles to camp. Scouts should be strongly discouraged from driving to camp. One vehicle at a time may be driven to the troop’s campsite to be unloaded, then returned to camp parking lot where it must remain during your troop’s stay in camp. Exceptions will be made by the Camp Director only, and will normally only be granted for those leaders and scouts who must rely on vehicles to get around camp. Troop trailers may be unloaded in your campsite, but then returned to the parking lot. If a camper needs a vehicle to get around camp, a doctor’s written explanation or a state issued handicap vehicle tag is needed. A leader/scout that has a disability and has a golf cart must first get permission from the Camp Director to bring it to camp. If the Camp Director allows the individual to bring a golf cart, there is a driving policy that includes staying on camp roads.

Camp Visitors: Visitors to Camp Hansen are welcome. However, it is important to reiterate that Camp Hansen is not a family camp, nor are there facilities for family camping. Families and visitors who are not registered Boy Scouts or registered Scouters or a part of your troop leadership will not be allowed to remain in your campsite-this includes Friday night. Please take this prohibition into consideration to avoid hardships when asking parents and others to visit you and our camp. There are no camping accommodations nearby but motels are available in Phillipsburg. There is a RV/Campground in Kirwin for reservations call Dan at 785-543-8681. Please inform your visitors to stop by the Headquarters’ building and check-in upon their arrival. Also, they are welcome to eat in the Dining Hall and may purchase meal tickets at the trading post at the following rates: Breakfast…$3.00 Lunch.........$4.00 Dinner…….$5.00 (under 3 free) Youth Protection/Hazing: The BSA’s Guide to Safe Scouting has a lot of information on Youth Protection. All members of the Boy Scouts of America are expected to conduct themselves in accordance with the principles set forth in the Scout Oath and Law. Physical violence, hazing, bullying, theft, verbal insults, drugs and alcohol have no place in the Scouting program and may result in the revocation of a Scout’s membership in the unit. Please share your troop’s stance on hazing with your scouts, particularly your older scouts. Just because an older scout was sent out looking for a smoke shifter does not mean this practice should be continued. The Camp Staff has received Youth Protection training and is required to report any inappropriate behavior by youth or leaders to the Camp Director. You can down load a current copy of the Guide to Safe Scouting on the internet at the council website www.coronadoscout.org. Provisional Troop: Often a scout is unable to attend camp with his troop for a variety of reasons or his troop is not attending or the scout wishes to attend for a second week. In this case, scouts may attend camp with another troop or with the Council’s Provisional Troop. Please call the council Service Center and we will contact leaders of troops already signed up for camp, so every scout that wishes can attend any of the three weeks. Although you can attend any week the Council’s Provisional Troop week will be June 19-25, 2011.. Dangerous Encounters with Wildlife: National BSA standards require each camp to work with local wildlife officials to develop and implement a plan to inform campers on precautions to take when wildlife is encountered. This will be discussed at the Leaders Meeting. Low/High COPE: Scouts must be a minimum 13 years of age and have a completed BSA Health and Medical form on file. These activities will be offered to your older scouts.

Camp-Wide Campfires: There will be a camp-wide opening campfire on Sunday evening and a camp-wide closing campfire on Friday evening. Working with the camp staff, the Friday campfire will be planned and run by the Senior Patrol Leaders. There will be a Senior Patrol Leaders meeting during the week where the closing campfire will be planned and organized. Golden Eagle: Golden Eagle will have a camp wide campfire on Wednesday. This campfire is the Golden Eagle Tapping Ceremony to select candidates. The Thursday evening induction/promotion ceremony is for members only. Thursday morning will be available for new Brave candidate’s service projects and practice/instruction for members. The Golden Eagle Leaders Guide will be available to members on line. Order of the Arrow: Arrowmen are asked to wear sashes on Monday and to the Golden Eagle tap out ceremony on Wednesday evening. The Kidi Kidish Lodge WWW 434 can also conduct unit elections for new Ordeal Candidates in your troop. If requested, a Brotherhood workshop would be held Monday evening, and the Brotherhood ceremony would be held Tuesday evening. Brotherhood and Vigil members are encouraged to attend the ceremony. Camp Hansen Medal / 5th Year: The Camp Hansen 5th Year Medal will be offered to 5th year camper/scouts attending camp this year. This medal is recognition of our camper/scouts and will be presented at the Friday evening campfire. Mile Swim: Time is 6:00am daily and daily practice is required. The mile swim participants will be announced at the Friday evening campfire. White Buffalo – We have a program that was developed at Camp Hansen to help develop Scouting skills both from the past and present. This program consists of around 50 skills that are designed to be fun and help a Scout develop new skills. All of the material for this program is supplied at camp and as a Scout gets the skills checked off he can earn different patches for the amount of skills he has accomplished. This program is designed mainly for older Scouts who would like to be working on something instead of having too much free time. For more information be sure to ask when arriving at Camp.

BSA Lifeguard Counselor: BSA Lifeguard Counselor training will be offered each session. Leaders who complete BSA Lifeguard Counselor can return to their troop/district and instruct BSA Lifeguard to youth and leaders. (Note: Have CPR certification done prior to camp. This program takes about 30 hours – make sure your troop has enough leadership.

Information for Parents: The Scout/Youth Guide was created specifically for parents. This guide is located on the council website at www.coronadoscout.org. What Your Troop Should Bring: Although there are a limited number of tools and other equipment for your use, we recommend that each troop bring its own equipment to camp to supplement the limited equipment available. The following is a recommended list of equipment a troop should bring to camp: Hammer and shovel, wood tools (axes, bow saws, etc) American Flag, Troop Flag, Patrol Flags Insect (mosquito) repellent for scouts not having their own Boy Scout Handbooks and Field Books Current Merit Badge Pamphlets and Troop Library Troop records and Golden Eagle nominations Troop first aid kit – include sunscreen and after-burn lotion, i.e. aloe Garden hose (minimum 50’) & sprinkler to help keep dust down Map & Compass / Glow in the dark Frisbees Ice chest (ice is normally available for sale) water cooler Troop/Patrol cook kits to have the option of cooking out using food from the camp menu Troops may purchase fruit cobbler ingredients to make an evening cobbler(s) Lawn chairs, dining fly(s) with poles & rope, rain/sun tarp Wind up alarm clock Rope for axe yard, cloth line, etc. Large trash bags, large ground cloths for potential Golden Eagle candidates Equipment Checkout & Responsibility: Equipment can be checked out through the Trading Post. Merit Badge Information

Trail to Eagle Registration: Trail to Eagle registration will be held at the Chapel on Sunday evening. Trail to Eagle Program: Classes will meet almost all Tenderfoot to First Class requirements and will be offered as part of the Trail to Eagle Program. This program is scheduled so a first year Scout can earn one to three extra merit badges. First year merit badges are offered after the Trail to Eagle program in the morning and afternoon sessions. Scoutcraft skills are offered in the morning and aquatic and first aid skills in the afternoon. Merit Badge Program Schedule & Prerequisites: The schedule of merit badges offered during the camp and the prerequisites Scouts need to do prior to camp will be available at the February Roundtables. This information may be available on line. Merit badge lesson worksheets can be downloaded from (www.meritbadge.com). These worksheets follow the requirements as outlined in the 2011 Boy Scout Requirement booklet on sale at the Service Center Scout Shop. Troops should purchase these booklets annually. Some merit badges take more time (and academic work) than others, and some badges are difficult to earn for younger Scouts. Scouts should be aware of merit badge requirements before they’re allowed to register Sunday night and have read the merit badge pamphlets. Because there are a minimum number of merit badge pamphlets available at the camp trading post, Scouts should bring their merit badge pamphlets with them. Class Participation Size: To ensure quality instruction, merit badge and other program sessions will have a maximum participation size. A merit badge class with 30 Scouts doesn’t help your Scouts or our Staff. Scouts will register for merit badges at camp on Sunday evening with the older Scouts registering first. There is no limit on Trail to Eagle classes. Block Style Program – There is a two-hour block of time each morning and afternoon on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday. The times are 8:30 – 10:30 and 2:00 – 4:00. Four two-hour blocks of time are offered. Some merit badges will take one block of time, some will only take one-half block of time and merit badges like Communications/Journalism will take two blocks of time. The advantage of this program is less moving around camp between merit badges and more instruction time. A Scout will be in a merit badge class twice with the block schedule instead of five times on the hourly schedule. Thursday becomes an open day in the morning (except for Trail to Eagle) and allows time for Golden Eagle instruction/practice, time to bring in outside programs, out of camp field trips, or time for Scouts to continue to work on merit badges since all program areas are still open.

DAILY PROGRAM

We follow a schedule developed to blend advancement, troop programs, camp wide programs and free time. Scouts will have the opportunity to spend all or part of each morning and afternoon working on Trail to Eagle, merit badges or special programs like COPE or BSA Lifeguard. A Scout can purchase a woodcarving neckerchief slide and carve it at the handicraft area. Some merit badges no longer meet every day at specific times. The block schedule allows Scouts to be more flexible with the programs they wish to experience. Evenings will generally include unit-organized activities or free time or a camp wide program. Daily schedules will be discussed in detail at the morning Scoutmaster’s meetings.

Counselor in Training (C.I.T.) Program

The goal of the Counselor in Training (CIT) program is to provide 14 and 15 year old scouts with a proper setting and limited educational opportunity to work with the Resident Camp Staff. The purpose of this program is threefold. First, to give the scout an opportunity to demonstrate and develop his instructing skills as a counselor in a camp program area. Second, to provide the Program Area Directors, the Program Director, and Camp Director a setting and opportunity in which to properly evaluate a scout’s potential program abilities. Third, and the most important, to develop young scouts into prospective Camp Staff members.

Golden Eagle

The Camp Honor Program of Camp Hansen based on the traditions of the American Indian. Its purpose is to intensify the aims and ideals of the Boy Scouts by providing a form of recognition for exceptional scout campers. The scouts tapped into Golden Eagle are doing their best to advance in scout rank, live by the Scout Oath and Law and giving leadership to his troop and patrol. The Troop Committee and Scoutmaster must recommend scouts and leaders to be eligible for membership. See 2011 Golden Eagle Leader Handbook for specific requirements. Nominees need approval of unit leadership to be considered for membership. All youth and adult members will check in on Sunday at Headquarters. Fire builders in camp will be give responsibility of building and tending the many campfires scheduled during the week. Assignments will be posted after breakfast Monday at Headquarters. Additional Golden Eagle Handbooks are available upon request from the Scout Service Center and will be available on line www.coronadoscout.org/camp in February. Bob Gibbens is our Golden Eagle Coordinator and will be in camp each week. Questions, e-mail Bob Gibbens at [email protected].

Costume Building & Dance Practice

This is a great activity for Golden Eagle and Order of the Arrow members. Your new Braves and Warriors will learn the skills of making their costume and Trial Dance. Both are requirements for advancement in Golden Eagle. It is helpful for those new Braves and Warriors to make this part of their camp schedule from 1:00pm – 1:45pm Monday thru Friday. The Golden Eagle Leaders Guide book has information on costume building, suggestion for costume parts and estimated cost of supplies at the Trading Post.

Scout & Leader Advancement Requirements Scout and adult leader advancement requirements will be available in the 2011 Golden Eagle Leader Guide book, available in February. However, youth must be registered campers, be in camp for the entire week, and have paid the camp fee, or must be on camp staff or CIT members for that week. Nominations for youth advancement are in the Golden Eagle Leader Guide book. Please encourage and help scouts to advance to appropriate scout ranks before camp.

Project COPE

What is COPE? COPE (Challenging Outdoor Personal Experience) is a program comprised of group initiatives and team building, problem solving, and physical challenges. Our low- &-high COPE courses are part of an Older Scout program at Camp Hansen. Participants must be at least a First Class Scout and 13 years old, and complete a health screening with the camp Health Officer and wear long pants for COPE. Although COPE uses some of the skills, techniques, and tools of rock climbing, it is not simply a climbing course. Participants climb, swing, balance, jump, rappel, and think of solutions to a variety of activities. The course is designed to build self-confidence and teamwork in a shorter length of time than any challenge that most scouts will ever encounter. COPE has seven goals or areas of development including: Trust Communication Self-esteem Leadership Problem solving Decision making Teamwork Why participate in COPE? To experience challenges and adventure as a participant in the following activities:

Initiative Games: Initiative games are used at the beginning of each session so those participants will be able to work together through communication and trust to achieve their goals. Low COPE Events: LOW COPE events are more challenging than initiative games. While individual coordination and strength are helpful, no one can accomplish the LOW COPE course without the team effort and support of their group. High COPE Events: HIGH COPE is a series of difficult events that involve climbing, walking on wires and beams, and taking a ride while safely tied to safety ropes and cables. High COPE elements are 35 feet above ground. Low COPE is a prerequisite to HIGH COPE.

Again, older scouts interested in the COPE program must be at least a First Class Scout rank and 13 years of age, or have approval from the COPE Director. Scouts may want to take COPE and still take a couple of merit badges that they may need for their next rank advancement. All participants must have a current BSA Health & Medical Form signed by a physician on file at camp and cleared by the Camp Health Officer.

Camp Safety Procedures and Policies

BSA’s Guide to Safe Scouting is the reference for safety procedures used at camp. Leaders are strongly encouraged to read the pamphlet prior to attending camp. The following are a few safety procedures that we follow at camp, but the guide certainly provides more policies and recommendations to help make your camp experience a safe one.

1. All aquatic areas (pool & lake) are off limits during hours of darkness. 2. Rifle and archery ranges are roped off and should be approached only from the

designated directions. Extreme caution should be used when the red “warning sign – range in use” flag is flying. Ask the Range Officer for permission to enter the area.

3. Campsite fire barrels should be kept full of water at all times. 4. No one is permitted to ride in the back of trucks, campers, pick-up trucks, or outside of

automobiles (including tailgates of station wagons). Seatbelts are to be worn by all passengers.

5. No open fires are allowed in campsites, except in approved campfire rings. There are designated campfire areas if your troop wants to do cooking over an open fire, etc.

No Fire is ever Left Unattended

6. Scouts leaving their immediate campsite should always use the “buddy system” (preferably in groups of 3). Leaders need to know the location of their scouts. Therefore, scouts need to let their leaders know when they leave the campsite.

7. No scout is to leave the camp property without completing a “Scout Leaving Camp Early” form, which the Scoutmaster and Camp Director must sign.

8. National regulations require all liquid fuel bulk containers to be stored by camp personnel in a locked facility. Please check any bulk fuels at the camp storage facility. For safety reasons, do not store containers in vehicles. There are no flames in tents (matches, candles, etc.).

Camp Emergency Procedures

The following instructions are for your guidance in case of an emergency. The Emergency Procedures handout is available at camp and reviewed.

1. Missing Camper: Notify the Camp Trading Post immediately or Health Lodge Officer if after hours.

2. Accident or Injury: Notify Health Lodge personnel. An adult should always accompany an injured scout.

3. Fire: Implement the Camp Fire Guard Plan and notify the Camp Trading Post or Health Lodge Officer if after hours.

4. High Winds/Tornado/Severe Storms: The Dining Hall and Headquarter’s have basements that are used. Staff will direct scouts in their program areas. All campers should be drilled on procedures at camp in case they are on the trail when a storm hits. The use of the buddy system is very important. Emergency Procedures will be available at camp.

5. Alarm Warning System: A siren system is used for fires and other camp emergencies. Post Emergency Procedures (given out at camp) in your campsite and review with your scouts. A drill will be conducted within 24 hours of your arrival at camp.

Baden-Powell Troop Award A Standard of Excellence

The Baden-Powell Troop Award can be earned by all troops. The award has pre-established criteria that are set up to assist troops in conducting a successful Resident Camp experience. Earning the Baden-Powell Troop Award is a measure of excellence – identifying your troop as a unit dedicated to the fun and fellowship of the Resident Camp adventure. Read the requirements carefully. Discuss them with your Patrol Leader’s Council, and make plans to earn the Baden-Powell Troop Award during your week in camp. Troops earning the Baden-Powell Troop Award will receive a unit streamer at the closing campfire.

To earn the Baden-Powell Troop Award, a troop must complete all eight requirements below, plus an additional six from those listed. The Camp Commissioner will certify each score sheet.

1. Demonstrate continuous Scout Spirit during the week. 2. Planned troop and patrol programs are posted in the campsite and/or patrol sites (daily

or weekly). 3. The troop fireguard plan, filled out daily by troop leadership, is posted and fire protection

is available at each tent. 4. The campsite is neat, clean, and free from unnecessary hazards. The troop encourages

camp clean up. 5. Fly the United States flag in your campsite. If available, fly the troop flag. Conduct daily

troop flag ceremonies. 6. Follow the camp policies and guidelines as set in the Camp Leader’s Guidebook (i.e.

leadership requirements, smoking, etc.). 7. The troop participates in all camp-wide flag retreat ceremonies, unless on an overnight

campout/hike. 8. Schedule with Camp Commissioner to clean restrooms in Dining Hall or Headquarters.

In addition to the above 8 requirements, the troop must complete 6 of the following 12 projects. 1. Conduct a troop, or participate in an inter-troop campfire. 2. All patrols display flags and show Scout Spirit at camp-wide activities (retreats,

campfires, camp-wide games, etc.). 3. Perform a camp good turn or conservation project from the Ecology Director’s list. 4. Provide youth color guard for morning or evening camp wide flag ceremony or if not

enough youth, is part of a two-troop color guard. 5. Leader(s) take Safe Swim Defense. 6. Leader(s) take Youth Protection training. 7. Scoutmaster (or other registered adult leader) spends the entire week as a troop leader. 8. Patrol Leader’s Council plans the troop program through daily meetings and participates

in scheduled Camp Senior Patrol Leader meetings. 9. Conduct a Troop Board of Review during the week in camp. (Can ask other leaders to

help) 10. Construct a Troop gateway to your campsite. 11. Trash put in dumpster daily. 12. Attend February Roundtable / Pre-Camp Meeting-Camp Chats.

Troop Gateway Award

Sign up at camp for troops wishing to participate. Pioneering/lashing and ingenuity all count; but make it safe. No climbing on a gateway is allowed. Leaders will be asked to help with the judging. Awards will be made at the closing campfire. These have been very popular with poles to post flags, banner, bridges and even Christmas lights.

Bear Claw Outpost

This outpost may be taken on Sunday, Monday or Tuesday. All patrol members participating will receive a Bear Claw Totem. Patrols can earn this totem through teamwork, camping out, and locating a campsite using a map and compass and the following.

1. Working with his Scoutmaster, the Patrol Leader develops a written hike plan that includes an overnight campout. The plan includes: patrol name, troop number, scout’s names and what will be accomplished. The buddy system is followed on the outpost.

2. The Scoutmaster and Patrol Leader must turn the hike plan into Headquarters by noon of the day of the hike. This includes a timeline, location of campout and names of all attending.

3. The patrol draws its food from the Dining Hall at 5:15 pm and departs for their overnight campsite.

4. During the overnight, the scoutmaster visits the area and inspects the patrol. The Scoutmaster looks for leadership from the Patrol Leader. He checks to see that BSA Camping guidelines are being followed, and if the goals of the campout are being met.

5. The patrol must return in time to attend breakfast in the Dining Hall the next morning. The Scoutmaster and Patrol Leader report that the patrol has qualified for the Bear Claw Outpost Totem.

6. The Scoutmaster and/or Patrol Leader have the option to cancel the outpost due to bad weather, lack of discipline, or a lack of leadership.

If a weather warning has been issued, all outposts will be cancelled.

I want to be a Volunteer

Trail to Eagle morning (Scoutcraft) sessions, merit badge counselors, canoe trip (Thursday), bring a telescope, help in the kitchen, Golden Eagle ceremonies (speaking parts), mountain boarding, mountain bikes, etc. Many Scouters ask the question, “What can I do to help camp be successful”? It’s great that we have so many adult leaders and parents asking that question because it means they understand that the camps belong to all of us and that we all share responsibility for doing what we can to make our camps the best possible for our scouts. Following are some suggestion for the Scouters who want to help. Volunteer Staff Positions Needed: Spend the week with your troop or with the camp staff. Some leaders help the entire week, some help with one merit bade or program. Contact the Camp Director/Camp Ranger to volunteer. During your week of Summer Camp: If you have a special skill or knowledge about a certain merit badge or program area, talk to the Program Director about helping out. Work with your scouts at camp to ensure they’re staying active. Summer Camp is the place for scouts to advance and acquire skills that many would find difficult at home. Whatever their interest or potential, there will be a variety of activities available to keep your scouts busy. Work with the Camp Staff to help make your troop’s camping experience an enjoyable one, and the one they will remember forever. Bring some skilled tools to camp, they might come in handy – for all of us. Call Camp Ranger Rex Lowe at 785-543-6688 to see if there is a project you could help with during the week you are in camp. Anytime during the Year: Consider coming to one of the workdays scheduled at our two camps (Hansen & Brown) where there is always a need for skilled and unskilled helpers. Watch the council newsletter for dates, times, and projects to be done. Ask about the council’s Campmaster Corps where you can stay at camp for a weekend and check units in and out of camp, etc.

REMEMBER – IT CAN’T BE DONE WITHOUT YOU!
