I've also had flashbacks of my feelings of helplessness and panic wondering if it was better to evacuate or stay put with all our horses, goats, cats and dogs when Cate- gory 5, Hurricane Isabel blasted up the Virginia and Maryland coasts in September 2003. During Isabel, we were not under a mandatory evacuation and chose to ride out the storm and wow, was it stressful! We completely boarded up our barns because I was so afraid of flying debris possibly hurt- ing the horses. Our road was blocked for a couple days until we and our neighbors could get it cleared with our chainsaws, tractors, and trucks. We had no power (my parents gave us a generator the following Christmas) or water (well pumps don't work without power). Fortunately, we had plenty of advanced notice to pre- pare, so we filled our bathtubs with water to flush toilets; we stock-piled water in multiple troughs for the horses; since we always make sure to have enough grain/hay on hand, that wasn't a concern. We also had plenty of food for us and the rest of our hairy children. That first night when the hurricane winds and rain pounded our 155 year old house, I just kept reminding myself that it successfully withstood many storms before this one, and it would weather this one just as well. Fortunately, we and our hairy family came out of that experience unscathed, our beautiful historic house and all its outbuildings still stand, and even our glass outdoor arena mirrors survived Isabel's attack with only minimal damage. A week after the storm passed, 77 counties in Virginia and the entire state of Maryland were declared disas- ter areas by President George W. Bush. From this experience, Lenny and I learned how to have our farm better prepared for disasters and I de- cided that living near a coast is definitely not good for my nerves. 5. Cincinnati area dressage riders looking for more GMO involve-ment? Jen proposed creating a Cincy Area Chapter of KDA that will be pre-

sented to the KDA Board of Directors at their Nov. 7 meeting. If you are inter-ested in having a GMO membership that provides exciting educational bene-fits, is forward thinking (conducts meetings online to eliminate travel require-ments), is involved in improving the quality of dressage in our area, has ex-perience conducting both schooling shows and USEF/FEI sanctioned competi-tions (Jen thought they did a marvelous job organizing and managing Region 2 championships and they're about to take on our first National Championship in many years), then contact KDA President, Michelle Morehead [email protected] to let her know your support of this idea.

Jen Truett Teaching a Clinic in Michigan

Did you know you can hire Jen Truett to teach clinics at your facility? She will be teaching one in Michigan November 10-11. People interested in auditing should contact Barbara Reis at [email protected], phone 278-670-9031, or Sandy Tull, [email protected], phone 810-397-0387 Have a Ride With Your Mind clinic with Jennifer Truett at your own facility! Contact Jen at [email protected] for detailed information on dates available and pricing.

Help Wanted at DHF We are always looking for hard-working, responsible people to work at DHF. Prior horse experience, references and no criminal record are required. Positions for stall cleaners, barn help, working students and apprentices are always opening up, so if you are interested, contact Helen Trimeloni at [email protected] for details or to submit your resume. (High-tech stall cleaning! Lenny Truett using one of the Stall Shakers which both save bedding and speed stall cleaning.)

Wanted: New Lesson Horses At DHF, we’re very careful to sell school horses while they're still happy in their work. We don’t want them to ever become sour or unhappy with their jobs. Some of our wonderful les-son horses and ponies are for sale right now, and others are leased, so we will soon have a need for a new horse or two in the DHF school horse string. The ideal lesson horse is safe, sound, sane, not too old, not too young, not too tall, not too just short, but just right :) Reminds me about a story with bears. (This is a quote from Lenny, actually.) What we’re looking for are horses between 15 and 16 hands, 6 to 12 years old with experience with novice riders. Show experience is a plus, although it isn’t necessary (show experience helps horses become more bomb-proof because of the “strange” things they see when working away from home). Horses that get along well in groups are best, and we prefer horses with no bad habits. If the horse can go barefoot with no problem, that’s a big plus. DHF’s Apprentice Trainers will work with the horses to make sure they know what we need them to know to be the best possible lesson horses. If you have a horse that could meet DHF’s needs and is reasonably priced, please contact Helen Trimeloni at [email protected]. Thanks for your help!

Increasing Fitness Levels for Rider and Horse through Cross-Training by Jill Pockras

While training for three past half-marathons, I learned the importance of cross-training. I used to swim once or twice a week and weight lift. I also fell in love with group fitness classes. These other training exercises greatly improved my running. The same concept of cross-training should be applied to the life of a dedicated rider and their horse. This will enable the pair to excel in whatever discipline they are participating.

Learning from biomechanics-based trainers, we constantly hear the phrase “bear down.” This is a very hard concept to apply if the rider’s core is weak. There are many activities which can strengthen a rider’s core off of the horse. Group fitness classes, such as yoga and pilates, focus on these muscles. Yoga provides strength as well as flexibility and peace of mind. Pilates provides core stability through a variety of exercises. These classes will allow a rider to become stronger and more able to actively engage the core muscles while riding. Overall, a stronger core will allow a better response from the horse and improve the rider’s seat.

We must also remember our other team member, the horse. When my horse Diesel first came to Dancing Horse Farm, he was underweight and scrawny. He needed to build muscle and gain some healthy weight. I received some advice from Helen Trimeloni, my trainer, about how to build him up. She suggested using the edge of the track for hill work outs, trot sets, and eventu-ally canter sets. None of this would have worked without attempt-ing to keep Diesel round throughout the process. I needed to build the right muscles and just “going through the motions” of the track workout would not have cut it. Currently, he’s gained a decent amount of healthy weight (although he’ll always be a skinny thor-oughbred). He has worked his way up to trot and canter sets equaling four miles during one session. We’re on our way to reach-ing our 2013 show season goals by becoming a fitter, healthier pair.

To Clip or Not To Clip? by Helen Trimeloni The leaves are now falling from the trees, and your horse's short summer coat has also fallen out. With a thicker winter coat, you may have noticed you horse sweating more during work. But how do you know if he needs to be clipped? Clipping removes the horse's protective hair coat, and leaves them more vulnerable to the cold, requiring heavier blanketing. However, unclipped horses sweat more, and need to be walked until they are completely dry before they can be put away. Leaving a horse with wet hair will allow him to become chilled very quickly and can leave a horse vulnerable to illness or hypothermia. If you choose to clip your horse, your cool-out time will be greatly reduced, but you will need to get heav-ier blankets, especially if your horse will be turned out. There are many variations of clips, from just re-moving a small strip of hair along the chest to shaving everything but the mane and tail. The best way to determine what type of clip would be best for your horse is to clip the general area that gets sweaty when your horse is working. For most horses, this is the neck, chest, and shoulders. If you decide to have your horse clipped, Helen T and Paige are available to clip your horse for you.

Editor's note: This photo’ of a really amazing clip job has been floating around Facebook for a long time. Please don’t expect Helen or Paige to do THIS kind of job on your horse (unless you pay them extra!)! LOL You can learn what various styles of clips look like and are called at this link: http://www.masterclip.co.uk/

horse_clipping/horse_clip_types.aspx or via the signs on the tack

room doors in Barns 1 and 2.

The Importance of Setting Goals by Maya Hall

One of the most important things I have learned since I’ve been at Dancing Horse Farm would be goal setting. To me, Splash isn’t an eventer, dressage horse, trail rid-ing horse or jumper, he’s my partner and teammate with whom I set my goals. Many of my goals don’t even involve horseback riding. They may just be im-proving our relationship, manners, or our level of respect for each other. All of these things come into play no matter what style of riding one does. I personally don’t have enough concentration to ride in the arena and work on similar things every day, so in order for me to accom-plish my everyday goals, I had to think outside of the box. I always expect Splash to give a 100% effort just as he expects me to do the same. Every day goals can be as simple as keeping his walk consistent or getting him to bend in his least favorite direction, which all contrib-ute to dressage. In order for us to accomplish these goals, we may be riding bareback, going on a trail ride or even playing polo! Galloping on the track or going on a trail ride gives our minds a break while still working on all of the simple everyday goals that will eventually allow us to accomplish our long-term goals. I know Splash doesn’t have the willingness to work in the arena every day because he knows his rider doesn’t. I’m sure almost anyone can agree with me when saying dressage can be frustrating at times. There are times when those goals I set weren’t achieved. I know when this happens I wasn’t communicating clearly with him, so I try different ways until I get a positive reaction. There are many days where all my con-centration that goes into getting him to come round can go into other things, such as bending or stretching. Since coming to DHF, I have learned that finding ways to accomplish goals can be as simple as giving your horse the opportunity to tell you what you’re doing wrong. I never would have thought in a million years that my spotted pony would be able to come round. I learned in the process of setting goals you must be-lieve in them in order for them to be achieved. It’s okay to have a ridiculous goal that seems really far-fetched, but by setting those small everyday goals that ridiculous goal becomes more and more possible. The day you accomplish your far-fetched goal can catch you by surprise, just as it did for me the day Splash started to come round.

Jen and Lenny Truett had fun dressing up as vampires, but for the next day’s fun show, they decided not to use the makeup. With the makeup on, Lenny scared little children and Jen scared horses!

Orleans for the USDF Convention Dec 6-8. DHF’s Christmas Party will be Dec. 9 at 6:30 PM at Jen and Lenny’s house (please bring a covered dish and a white elephant gift). Then, we round out our 2012 DHF educational offerings with a special clinic with Heather Blitz Dec 15-16! Riding spots with Heather are still available. Please email me if you'd like to ap-ply to ride with Heather. As always, we have unlim-ited space for auditors at our clinics, so feel free to join us as we finish up 2012 with a bang! 2013 is shaping up to be an exciting educational year at DHF as well. Melissa Miller is hosting a jumping/flat work clinic at DHF with her coach, Leslie Law Jan. 12-13. I will be training in Florida with Heather from January to early March. When I return, we host our

spring RWYM clinic with Mary, next is our annual Teacher Training in May. June 15-16 brings a USDF Instructor/Trainer Final Exam hosted at DHF (yes, I'm "finally" going to get to finish what I started so many years ago in Maryland when I went through the en-tire program but couldn't do the final exam because we moved). Then on to summer camps, a clinic (or hopefully two) with Heather at some point in the year, our annual DLSC shows, a fall RWYM clinic with Mary then it's winter. Whew...this is why I'm never bored! Enjoy fall festivities and come watch Mary this week-end make impressive improvements in both horses and riders. -Jen

Greetings, Autumn! Continued from page 1

Employee Christmas Fund Our employees work very hard to take outstanding care of our horses and Dancing Horse Farm itself, and if you ask one of them for help with something, you’ll get cheerful agreement every time. They’re a wonderful bunch of folks, they really are. Every year at Christmas we show them our appreciation by collecting money from the DHF clients to divide evenly among the barn staff. Please put your donation in the white box in the office and mark it “Employee Christmas Fund,” or you can send a check via snail-mail to the farm, with the same marking on the check. Thanks for helping us reward our employees for all their hard work!

Horses for Sale - More info: [email protected] or 937-532-3108 Wildorado’s Mandalay is a handsome young (DOB: 18 May 10) Danish Warmblood gelding. Mandalay is by the famous Blue Hors Don Roman-tic by Blue Hors Don Schufro and out of Kastaniegardens Eliise/Ragazzo/Raphael. Mandalay is a lovely bay with a very large star and two back socks. He has a quiet, easy-going personality and lovely, expressive gaits. He is over 16 hands already and has huge joints and substantial leg bone. He will mature to at least 16.3 hands. He had a full pre-purchase exam on 10/22/11 including x-rays, flexions, eyes, lungs, heart check and passed with flying colors! The x-rays showed that his growth plates are still wide open so he still has a lot of growing to do. He is priced at $18,000 to a show home. New videos of both Mandalay and Zachary: taken 16 May 2012: http://bit._ly/KcqTLC http://bit.ly/MXLPGB http://bit.ly/LHSeEq http://bit.ly/Kcsa5y http://bit.ly/M76JEj

Wildorado's Zachary is an elegant young (10 May 10) Danish Warmblood gelding for sale. Zach has superior dressage bloodlines since he is by Blue Hors Zack by Rousseau and out of Noble Heart by Michellino. He is a brown bay with two small hind socks and currently stands over 16 hands. He will mature to at least 16.2 hands. He had a full pre-purchase exam on 10/22/11 including x-rays, flexions, eyes, lungs, heart check and passed with flying colors! The x-rays showed that his growth plates are still wide open so he still has a lot of growing to do. He is priced at $18,000 to a show home. New videos of Zach are at the links at the end of Mandalay’s ad above.

Sticky Bun is a 2006 13.1h flashy brown and white Shetland/Paint cross mare who is as cute as they come. She is very friendly and always ready to greet visitors to her stall, nuzzling them and searching for treats. She came to us with nice gaits but very green, and has been in training with the ap-prentices and advanced students since winter of 2010-11. Sticky now knows 1st-2nd level dressage and is jumping courses. She has beautiful hunter form and is working on her changes. She could do very well in the hunter ring and has the talent for ‘A’ shows. She is quiet and gentle enough for our beginning students and has been used for beginner lessons and camps. Sticky Bun would make a wonderful best friend for lucky child and could easily progress with her rider up the levels. She goes barefoot, is an easy keeper, and is UTD on all farrier, dentistry, and veterinary care.

Price will increase with continued training, lesson experience, and show mileage. $10,000

Miley is a 13.1h 2006 buckskin pony mare of unknown breeding, but her fancy movement hints at some Morgan heritage. She can be a little feisty but is always fun to ride and has never bucked or reared. Her flashy gaits led to her purchase by us as a prospective dressage pony, but we soon discovered that she is equally talented over fences. Miley was quite green when we got her in January 2011, but she has been in training and now is solid WTC and over fences with our lesson students. She is a favorite in our lesson program and is jumping 2' courses with students and will begin competing in the hunter ring very soon. She is super about getting her correct leads and nearly has her changes. She has no vices, goes barefoot, is an easy keeper,

and is UTD on all her veterinary, farrier, and dentistry care. Miley would make a wonderful hunter, Pony Club or 4-H

Well started under saddle. He is very careful over fences with a powerful jump. He will be a fantastic Open Jumper or High A/O Jumper. Solitaire will be a top level competitor and partner for an advanced level or profes-sional rider. While our farm's focus is on Show Jumping, Solitaire has good foundation in dressage work and would make a great Dressage horse. He is a smart and willing horse with superbly elastic gaits. He is a true athlete and is certain to be a top competitor in any company. He has a sensible temperament and really bonds with his grooms and rider. He travels well; over the past summer he spent a week at the Kentucky Horse Park during the Blue Grass Festival Hunter Jumper show. He hacked out in the busy warm up rings and also went trail riding both

alone and in a group around the horse park. He will be at several USEF shows this summer at the Kentucky Horse Park and will be available to be tried both at the horse shows and at our farm in Dayton Ohio. Videos available upon request.
