Course Summary This is an ideal course to gain practical experience of dance techniques - Classical Ballet, Contemporary, Jazz and Choreography. You will develop performance, composition and appreciation skills in dance relevant to the Performing Arts Industry. You will study a range of professional works from a variety of dance styles and practitioners and you will also perform live dance productions. Specific entry requirements Participate in a dance audition workshop Interview with staff Progression skills and opportunities The subsidiary diploma is equivalent to one A2 qualification and can be used alongside other equivalent qualifications as entry into higher education. Students will have the opportunity to attend professional shows and workshops by industry professionals as part of their studies. You will also be taught by ex-industry professionals who will guide you through possible progression routes on completion of your studies. Students studying on the subsidiary diploma dance course have gone on to study at professional dance schools and Universities. How is the course assessed? What topics will I be studying?Dance Performance (Mandatory): This unit develops physical and interpretive skills and looks at the techniques required for performing dance.

Performing to an Audience (Mandatory): This unit brings together all the skills and knowledge developed over the course. You will present rehearsed ensemble work to a live audience as part of a dance showcase.

Developing Contemporary Dance Technique: This unit is about developing contemporary dance technique and will give you the opportunity to gain a solid foundation of skills in this style of dance. The practical aspect of this unit will develop dance skills whilst setting achievable goals and targets, strengthening your technical ability through a variety of techniques.

Choreographic Principles: This unit will develop your knowledge of the process of choreography. This will be achieved through a series of practical and creative tasks, which will enable you to explore movement design and create dance for performance. Various choreographic techniques will be studied in order to create innovate and original dance work.

Developing Classical Ballet: Ballet is at the heart of many of the dance styles performed today. It can be classical or modern and is performed in a variety of contexts. This unit introduces the essentials of ballet technique, developing strength, technique and flexibility.

Jazz Dance: In this unit learners will develop dance skills working in a jazz style with the emphasis on practical work and performance. Different Jazz techniques will be studied from Musical Theatre to commercial dance.

Will I need any specialist materials or equipment?Girls will need black leggings and a black leotard Ballet shoes/Jazz ShoesBoys will need black shorts/tracksuit bottoms and a black T-Shirt.

Fact File• For students planning a career in Art and Design, the A Level course will have the necessary breadth of work for entry onto a Degree or Foundation degree in Art and Design.• Some students study a one year full-time Art and Design Foundation course before progressing to degree level. A few students go directly into work related areas. Typical career options include fine art, illustration, textile design, interiors, fashion design, fashion promotion and three-dimensional design, including jewellery, costume and theatre.• Combines well with many other subjects at A level including other Art, Design or Media A levels.

Course SummaryArt, Craft & Design is a multi-disciplinary course which involves working with a wide variety of techniques and processes. In the first year, the course expands and develops students’ practical skills, knowledge and understanding of materials. Students will learn a wide variety of drawing, printmaking, craft and textile techniques and will create exciting contemporary artwork in two and three dimensions. This is deal if you want to explore processes and techniques from across the department.

During the second year the course seeks to build on the knowledge gained during the first year and develop the ability to work independently through sustained investigations, development of ideas and in depth analysis. Students will work on a variety of briefs but they will be more personally directed and in depth. The conclusion of the 2 year A level course will be for students to present two components of work in the form of a portfolio with an externally set assignment.

Specific entry requirementsIt is recommended that you have a grade 5 or above in an Art or relevant Technology subject. If this is not applicable, you should bring a small portfolio of work to your enrolment interview.

Being open to experimentation and to trying new things, as well as having a creative outlook and a willingness to work hard, is highly valued.
