Milapfest Dance Fellowships

One of the best things an aspiring young dancer can hope for, is to go out and learn the intricacies of a particular dance style from a wonderful and inspiring GURU. This ‘Finishing School’ style of learning is by and large not possible outside of India in a sustained manner – established dancers and teachers who wish to hone their teaching, choreographic or abhinaya skills often have to make their own arrangements to do so. Each year Milapfest awards several dance fellowships, for dance students and established teachers in the UK. In 2010 Milapfest also established the ‘Distinguished Teacher Award’ in recognition of teachers in the UK who have contributed significantly to the landscape of Indian dance. The fellowships are awarded to deserving candidates from amongst those attending DANCE-INDIA on the basis of recommendations given by the Dance-India faculty and Gurus. The Milapfest Dance Fellowship will enable the successful candidate to travel to learn from an established Guru. For further information please contact Archana Shastri at Milapfest on 01512913949.

Also I this year I would like to involve more with performance and other creative works this is the best time for me to get best guidance to prepare myself for a dance production.

I am very happy for Milapfest that you have been helping our South Asian artists since 1985.

— Milapfest Dance Fellowship 2010

Khavita Kaur Rendhawa

I am deeply honored to have received the 2010 Milapfest Traveling Scholarship, yet humbled for this precious opportunity to grow and develop as an Odissi dance artist. Thank you Milapfest for all your support and encouragement.

I would be training with Guru Durga Charan Ranbir in the birthplace of Odissi itself, Odisha. I will be learning one of Guruji’s signature choreographies, Dasa Mahavidya (10 Dimensions of Devi).

Undoubtedly, I am excited at the prospect of training with Guruji, whom I have only managed to see once in the past 3 years. But more importantly, for me, this is more than just a training opportunity. It is an opportunity for me to challenge and develop myself further, expand my horizons and mature within the art form.

I am looking forward to this journey of exploration and revelation. I feel a great sense of responsibility to ensure that I come back to the UK with something new to offer to the Odissi scene in the UK.

— Milapfest Dance Fellowship 2010

Karan Pangali

Having been awarded the fellowship has made me determined to focus on my Kathak training like never before. I decided to go to Kadamb in Ahemdabad during Dec 2010 to train with Kumudini Lakhia. Coming from a versatile dance background including Bollywood, Bhangra, Hip-Hop, Salsa etc it was quite an experience to be working alongside Kadamb’s dancers who have devoted their life to just Kathak. I felt training in this environment helped me acquire a refined Kathak style, new techniques and accelerated my learning process. I picked up a lot of valuable dance material in my short stay and am looking forward to my next trip. A bonus of the travel fellowship was the delicious food in Ahemdabad which kept me going through the intense dancing! I would like to thank Milapfest for their support and helping take my Kathak dance to the next level.

— Milapfest Dance Fellowship 2010

Kiran Ratna

It’s really nice to be recognised in such a fantastic & very unexpected way. I look forward to collaborating with Milapfest to further develop Bharatanatyam in Wales as well as out of Wales.Milapfest have created a fantastic scene in UK for classical dance. These art forms and practitioners need such organisations for encouragement to continue to pursue these wonderful forms.

—Distinguished Teacher Award 2010

Lucrezia Maniscotti

I’m so proud and happy of receiving this great chance. I need to go deeper and deeper with my studies in India and Milapfest is giving me a great support to do that.I’ll take this opportunity to go on with my studies with my guru Padmashree Adyar K Lakshman for dance, with Seetharama Shrama for vocal music and nattuvangam, with Indira Kadambi for abhinaya. Living in Europe is difficult to have the necessary training for our artistic growth, so we must keep in touch with India, so I must really thank Milapfest for having selected me. I will work hard to make my best out of it!

— Milapfest Dance Fellowship 2010

Sooraj Subramaniam Taking part in Dance-India was a superb experience, and represented everything I hold dear about dance. I am privileged to be awarded the Milapfest 2010 Travelling Fellowship, and I intend to travel to New Delhi to train with Madhavi Mudgal. I hope this to be the start of a long and fulfilling relationship with India and her artists, bolstering my professional career in dance.

— Milapfest Dance Fellowship 2010

Devika Rao

Thank you very much for selecting me for the Milapfest travelling fellowship 2010. This is wonderful opportunity to develop myself as a dancer and teacher, I will use this Traveling fellowship to go to India for continuing professional development with amazing teachers, Prof C.V. Chandrasekhar and Vyjayanthi Kashi -in this CPD period I’m aiming to achieve more teaching skills so that I can teach UK’s younger generation and work hard as I can to ensure that students will get the best experience throughout their dance journey.
