‘A Person at Work’

I cited Henri-Cartier Bresson’s ‘Tête á tête’ portraits book for influence on framing a single subject. These images display how the background adds detail, certain

elements describe the subject and make them ‘unambiguous’ – fitting to the current brief.

First Shoot(s)Evidence of non-working images that are ambiguous and do not fit the brief at all

or not fully. Persistence and repetitive trial, error and re-composure led me to make an informed decision that led me to create my first final image, at the Cosy

Club in Cardiff (bottom right)

Getting There…

Moving On

Initial Ideas about Relationships:

• Between two people (whether it be a friendship, courting, marriage, paternal/maternal or a meeting.

• Between one person and an inanimate object.

• Between one person and their environment/the landscape.

• Between colours, patterns, textures, symmetry, geometry and other graphic elements.

• Between one person and a form.

• Between a person and a possession/hobby/habit/addiction.

Research

‘Relationships’I chose to reference Elliot Erwitt’s fantastic book ‘Personal Best’ as when flicking through it, almost every image had in it established some kind of connection, a relationship. He was also a master of form, similarly to HCB. As I thought about initially shooting in the street,

Erwitt was a perfect first port of call for street photography inspiration.

THE PORTRAIT…

...AS A NARRATIVE

THE PORTRAIT…

...AS A NARRATIVE

Initial Portrait IdeasThe current project involves 8 images with a theme that links them all. After being informed that often, the best stories may be ‘on your doorstep’, I took this literally and visited my home where two neighbours and one person living opposite are all widowed. I knew them all well and made a start promptly. In addition, one of my

grandparents on each side are widowed, giving me easy access to shoot.

I looked at Larry Sultan, Kaylynn Deveney and Julian Germain’s projects for inspiration and it was abundant.
