TRANSCRIPT
From The Principal’s Desk
It’s been a busy few weeks at school with secondary exams taking place and
reporting under way. I notice that students are looking a lot brighter this week with
the prospect of holidays not too far away and the exams a thing of the past. We
often have a view that once exams or assessment is complete, the work is over and
behind us. We view our results as a summation of who we are and even if we got a
‘D’ at least its behind us and we can enjoy the holidays.
I’d like to suggest that assessment and reporting is really the beginning of the
cycle. It tells us where we are at currently, what we know and don’t know, and gives
us some really good information on where we need to be expending our
energy and setting our goals for the future. Successful students and indeed
successful people are those who are able to accurately evaluate where they are at
and determine what is required to get to where they want to be. As exams are hand-
ed back, reports are sent home, and teacher interviews are organised, I hope that all
these measures feed into this cycle of improvement. I would encourage
parents and students to sit down with all this information during the holidays to
determine some goals for the second semester. The devotion found in this
newsletter on ‘vision’ is a great way to work through making meaning of school for
students.
I’d like to thank parents and students for their efforts around uniforms in the last
week. Our uniforms are generally worn quite well so there was never a big problem
in this area, but it was good to see the effort and small adjustments that were made
by individuals in this area.
We have a number of student teams from Year 6 & 8 competing in the “Wonder of
Science’ Competition. Students have been working on some research projects and
will present their findings to student teams from other local schools whilst being
judged by university scientists. We wish them all the best. This week is also very busy
with the Eisteddfod. Not only have we a number of choirs entered but there are
many individuals competing. Congratulations on all the work and practice that has
gone into these performances throughout the year, and we wish you the very best.
Yours In Christ,

Ask God for a Vision A vision is a picture of what ‘can be’ rather
than ‘what is’. Your vision may be to bring
health where there is sickness—like the vision
Albert Schweitzer had for Africa. Or of
education where there is ignorance—like the
one that motivated Gilbert Tennent to help
establish Princeton University. It may be a
vision of freedom where there is
oppression—like the one that made William
Wilberforce give up a life of privilege to
eradicate slavery. Or your vision may be
smaller and simpler—like being the first one
in your family to graduate from university, or
becoming a great parent to your child even
though you yourself never had one. Or
breaking a bad habit before it breaks you… or
overcoming your fear of technology and
learning to use an iPad… or spending your
retirement years impacting the world around
you instead of sitting in a rocking chair
waiting to die. Thoreau said, ‘If you’ve built
castles in the air… put foundations under
them.’ But having a vision isn’t enough;
there has to be a commitment to act on it.
That’s called a mission—and it requires
setting specific, measurable steps to achieve
it. Those steps are called goals; they establish
a plan for accomplishing your mission and
thus fulfilling your vision. You’ll generally
have one vision, but many goals. And each
goal you reach brings you a step closer to
fulfilling your vision. And here’s the really
good news: when your vision comes from
God and you look to Jesus, He’ll give you the
strength, wisdom, connections, relationships,
and resources to make it happen.

Character & Culture
Are we making mountains out of mole hills?
There are a number of expectations in schools that can often seem a little pedantic. For example;
Some uniform rules can seem a bit over the top – e.g. Allowable jewellery for girls is to wear one pair of small plain gold or silver sleepers or studs.
Students need to arrive at school before 8.45am
Page 3
Teaching And Learning
Students need to raise their hand in class to ask a question.
Students should line up quietly outside of the classroom in boys’ and girls’ lines.
Students should wear a hat in the playground during morning tea and lunch
One could sit back and look at some of these expectations and feel that schools are creating big issues over things that really don’t matter – perhaps one could argue that schools are creating mountains over molehills.
As a College, we recognise that many of these expectations are pedantic. However, we don't pursue them for the sake of being pedantic but to train our students in compliance to, and respect for the standards of the community that they belong.
These standards are not a question of right or wrong, but they give individuals the opportunity to demonstrate their capacity to submit to and commit to things that they may not choose personally. No matter what the standard or expectation, student’s character is often displayed in the manner in which they respond to the expectations. For example, an obedient, respectful student, who has pride in the College will do their best to adhere to the standards.
Being part of any team, organisation or community always requires the sacrifice of something personal, and the conformity to something shared by the group. We have a variety of people attend the College with different backgrounds and opinions. Not everyone will agree with all of the College expectations (e.g. some students may see the idea of putting your hand up to ask a question in class is a waste of time). However, putting aside your personal opinions for the benefit of the wider community is often required to promote a positive environment.
Clear standards are not isolated to school organisations. Employers are looking for people they can trust to adhere to the expectations in their company. As a College, we hope that through learning how to adhere to standards, students will be able to readily fit into social groups, workplaces, teams and communities.
Although some College expectations can appear to be pedantic, the intention is not be difficult, but to communicate clearly the standards of the community to which they belong. Staff are not creating mountains out of molehills when they take time to train students the importance of adhering College expectations. I would like to encourage parents to support staff in their efforts to maintain our expectations, not only for the benefit of individuals but also the wider culture within the College.

Congratulations to Jake, Emma, Tayah and James who
participated at the Darling Downs Students With Disabilities
Cross Country Carnival last month.
They all successfully completed the Orienteering Course and the
Mini Cross Country set in the picturesque Newton Park in

Abbey flies off to Oxbridge Academic Program
Dalby Christian College Year 11 student Abbey Sullivan is heading off on the trip of a lifetime after being awarded an Exceptional Merit Scholarship to the Oxbridge Academic Program in Scotland this June.
80 students in years 9-12 from all over the World will attend the University of St Andrews, Fifi, Scotland from June 21 to July 18. Students on the program have the unique opportunity of using the facilities of the University of St Andrews as well as its surrounding town as a classroom and laboratory (from http://www.oxbridgeprograms.com/Programs/OxbridgeatStAndrews/TheProgram.aspx).
The application process involved Abbey submitting a personal statement, references from teachers, school report cards and an academic written project. She will major in Anatomy and Physiology and Minor in Molecular Biology during her class time at St Andrews.
Abbey received an Exceptional Merit Scholarship from Oxbridge amounting to 50% of the program fees as well as an award of $2500 from the Connellan Airways Trust for her travel expenses.
Year 7 & 8 Boys Engineering Design Technology
This semester the year 7 & 8 boys each designed, made, raced and evaluated CO2 Dragsters. These are small compressed-gas powered cars that travel at lightning speed along a 20m track, the object of which is to determine the fastest dragster and the most promising ‘engineering designer’ in this age group for 2016.
After weeks of careful design and construction, giving careful attention to aerodynamics, power to weight ratios, friction & drag, the boys were ready for the big day. Racing was fast and furious, vigorously testing the durability designed into each dragster until the final six fastest were determined. These six student’s dragsters will represent the College at the Queensland State Finals held in at the Maryborough Technology Challenge next term: Joel Sullivan, Ben Wilson, Joseph Slater, Joshua Toomey, Bennett Turner, Lane Hansen.
The finals between the top 6 dragsters came down to the wire until the grand final winner was determined by the best of three races. Congratulations to Lane Hansen for taking out the top spot and being crowned our 2016 boys champion.
