Egypt
IGI Beyti, the food and agricultural division of the Egyptian private investment company International Group for Investments, completed its new dairy in Noubaria, Egypt in 2002, going into full production during 2003. Until IGI's investment in the dairy, domestic milk in Egypt was sold by street vendors fresh from the pail and would need boiling at home before use. IGI's investment in the greenfield site, costing over $50m, brought about a change in the Egyptian market. Beyti was first established in 1998 and now employs over 600 workers. The name Beyti translates into English as 'Homemade'.
• Beyti (meaning “Homemade”) is part of IGI, a large and diversified group of companies that includes activities such as general trading,
• construction oil etc. Much of the trading business was based on supplying into Iraq during the Saddam Hussain regime, so this has diminished whilst Beyti has become an increasingly important part of the group. At the end of November it was rumoured that Saudi Arabia’s Al Marai has bought into Beyti, though this remains unverified.
• The dairy company has been registered in Egypt since around 2000 and has been manufacturing since 2002 at a plant in Noubara between
• Cairo and Alexandria. • The milks constitute the most important product group by far, whilst the juices are growing fast so are now the second
most important product • for the company. During 2006-2007 the company has invested to double its aseptic processing capacity for milk/juice. • The company supplies its products nationwide and exports to neighbouring countries. It processes on average around
20-25 mn • litres of raw milk per annum. It had been planning to vertically integrate and set up its own farms, but this project has
been put on hold for now. • Beyti purchases milk from commercial farms such as Dina. Due to the rising SMP prices Beyti’s usage of SMP in 2007 has
been very low. There is just enough farm milk available to operate on this basis, although supplies are tight in the summer and some SMP could potentially be required when export demand is strong.
• Beyti produces the following products:
• UHT plain and flavoured milk – selling under the Spiky brand • Yoghurt – chilled product; now under the company brand, but • formerly using the Yoplait brand under licence • Processed cheese – triangles and spread, Dallah brand • Juices (aseptic)

• Enjoy is the second-largest processor of local farm milk after Juhayna, with an intake of around 50 mn litres (140 tonnes/day average).
• The business was originally established in 1979. It used to produce ice cream under the Dolce brand, which it sold to Nestlé in 1996, leading it to rebrand as Enjoy in the same year.
• In October 2005 the family firm owned by Mohamed El Tawil and Saeed El Tawil was sold to a private equity firm Haykala for EGP90 mn. Haykala, whose major shareholder is the Commercial International Bank (CIB), outbid foodservice group Americana.
• The move appears to have assisted the company move forward, raising its turnover from EGP220 mn to around EGP300 mn in 2007,with EGP480 budgeted for 2008.
• Haykala is now planning to sell the business on and Enjoy indicatesthat it has just been the subject of due diligence by the Citadel Investment Group. This has just acquired Dina Farms along with local milk and cheese firm El Misreen and halva producer El Rachid. The indication is that Enjoy could become part of the same group in early
• 2008; if finalised, all entities are expected to retain their individual operating identities although some management rationalisation may occur.
• Dairy products make up around 40% of Enjoy’s sales, with juices the remainder. Production is at a plant based in Giza,
with a second now under construction on the other side of Cairo in 10th of Ramadan City –this will produce the same product mix but is unlikely to be operational until end 2008.
Products • The company now produces the following products:
• Fruit juices and concentrates • UHT plain and flavoured milk • Cup yoghurt
• Its share in packaged liquid milk fell from 17% in 2002 to 10% in 2003, • and has since been further eroded to 9% in 2007.

volumes of coffee creamers • A third factory manufacturing fruit concentrates (orange and tropical fruits such as mango and guava) • These sites continue to undergo significant investment. A new line has recently been added at the UHT plant and the capacity of the
Domty plant has been expanded from 420 to 600 tonnes/day (currently around 75% utilised). Further plants are now under construction for completion in 2008.
• Juhayna’s dairy inputs are 80-85% fresh milk, sourced from a network of 45 commercial dairy farms. The company is the country’s leading dairy business in terms of fresh milk intake (around 180 mn litres), market share (dominating UHT milk sales) and especially in terms of its ambition, seeing itself as a regional player competing with businesses such as Al Marai, not just local Egyptian dairy companies. The company exports widely, mainly to the Middle East, but also with some exports to Europe and the US.
• In 2006 Juhayna established a distribution division to handle its sales both within and outside Egypt. There is interest in developing this division’s potential as a trading arm for external principals supplying ingredients and finished products.
• One area that it has considered investigating further is the installation of a spray dryer. This would be quite a sideline from the group’s main emphasis on fresh products. It is only at the concept stage and has not been subjected to any detailed analysis, recognising that such an operation is inherently very difficult in Egypt.

Nestlé
• Nestlé has been expanding its role in Egypt by acquisition since 1988, when it took over Industrial Du Froid, a local producer of ice cream and yoghurt. In 1996 the company purchased the Dolce ice cream business from Nile Co. for Food Industries. It also acquired the licence for the Mövenpick brand in 2004. As a result Nestlé Egypt became ice cream market leader; the ice cream sector accounts for 35% of the group’s Egypt business.
• The company has three plants and employs around 2,800 staff. Nestlé supplies nationwide and also exports into the Middle East region. It also ships some product into the USA and Canada.
• Nestlé manufactures only a limited proportion of its output from raw milk, using around 4.4 mn litres/year for yoghurt production.
The company produces essentially three categories of food products:
Chilled products :
yoghurt (cup and drinking); in 2006 the company launched Nesvita, a premium, creamy yoghurt including the health-oriented ingredients inulin and bifidus, though this remains a niche product • Ice cream – leads market with Dolce and Nestlé brands Dry goods – • Nescafe, Maggi, Cerelac, Nido (repacked locally since 1992), Calcium Plus, Nesquik

Dina Farms
Dina Farms, a large private farm and dairy processor, is located a few dozen kilometres outside Cairo on the highway to Alexandria. It was created in 1987 by a local private company, and now covers around 9,235 feddans (39 mn m2). The farm combines some staple crops (wheat, bersim, alfalfa, corn) which are used mostly for its dairy herd,as well as intensive cash crops (banana, tomato, potato, other vegetables).
Until recently Dina Farms belonged to Dina for Agriculture Investments Company, a member of the Osman Group. However in September 2007 a consortium led by Egypt's Citadel Capital acquired 100% of Dina for Agriculture Investment’s shares for EGP 480 mn (US$85 mn). Dina produces between 60,000-90,000 litres/day of milk and operates Egypt’s sole milk spray drying facility, manufacturing low-heat SMP. It supplies product in minimum 25 tonne orders, and up to 200 tonnes during Feb, and indicates an ability to supply up to 800 tonnes on contractual basis. Some sources indicate a capacity as high as 2,000 tonnes. However it is variously reported as producing good or inconsistent quality milk powder, and several customers report that it has proven unable to fulfil even modest orders. The activity is simply a balancing use of liquid milk surplus to its cheese
Dina Farms has recently taken delivery of 850 new Holstein heifers from the United States, adding to its herd of 6,000 dairy cows (out of a total herd of more than 12,000) and solidifying its position as Egypt’s largest dairy producer. The company’s total herd of milking cows is expected to reach 10,000 by 2012.
The Dina Farms retail concept is what Seddik calls a “national chain of neighborhood specialty farm stores.” The convenience store-style shops sell fresh produce, fresh bakery, milk, yogurt and other dairy products including cheese, butter and cream. Fresh meats from the farm are also available as well as poultry (under the brand name “Dina Farms Selection”). “Dina Farms’ retail strategy is based on a limited-selection, high-turnover model,” says Seddik. “The higher turnover rate on a smaller number of items provides specialisation. Moreover, it makes the whole business — from stocking shelves to checking out customers — much simpler.” Dina Farms, located on the outskirts of Cairo, is both the largest privately owned farm in Egypt and the country’s leading dairy producer. The company also produces a diverse range of fruit and vegetable products for sale locally and internationally, the statement said. – TradeArabia News Service “The original plan was to open 20 outlets within five years, but the initial response from our newly opened store was tremendous. Market demand for safe, fresh products coming from a trusted source was such that we have decided to accelerate the expansion to target a total of more than 40 stores within the next five years.”
