A press conference is scheduled
for tomorrow morning at the Gas
Workers Union Hall, 9190 Mar-
shall Road, at 11 a.m. Attending
will be State Sen. Mike Stack;
State Reps. Brendan Boyle, Kevin
Boyle and John Sabatina; City
Councilman Jim Kenney; Craig
White, president and CEO of
Philadelphia Gas Works; and fam-
ily members of Mark Keeley, a
PGW worker killed while respond-
ing to a natural gas leak.
They will explain new legislation,
to be introduced in General As-
sembly, which would provide
death benefits to natural gas re-
sponders’ loved ones.
The legislation is in response to
the January natural-gas explosion
in Tacony that killed PGW worker
Mark Keeley. Stack and Brendan
Boyle will introduce legislation
that will add natural-gas respon-
ders who work for a city natural-
gas distribution operation and who
respond to a natural-gas leak or
threat of a natural-gas leak to the
class of employees covered under
law. Stack and Brendan Boyle
worked with PGW to craft this leg-
islation.

The majestic, training ship Dan-
mark, considered Denmark’s nauti-
cal ambassador will visit
Philadelphia September 23-27,
2011, and dock at Penn’s Landing
for public tours. This Tall ship has
a proud history with the United
States.
During World War II, Denmark be-
came occupied on Apr. 9, 1940
while the training ship Danmark
was on a routine training mission
in US waters (Jacksonville, Fla.).
In agreement with the Danish Am-
bassador to the United States, the
Honorable Henrik Kauffmann,
Capt. Knud L. Hansen placed his
training ship at the disposal of the
US Government; however, neutral-
ity prevented the acceptance of the
offer until Dec. 7, 1941 when Pearl
Harbor was attacked.
From that point onward and until
the end of the WW II, Danmark
and Capt. Hansen served under the
Stars and Stripes training some
3,000 US officer cadets. These
young men received a first-class
education in responsible seaman-
ship under Capt. Hansen’s capable
leadership and strict discipline;
later they would serve in the US
Navy. The First Officer of Dan-
mark during the war was Knud
Langevad, and he was in charge of
training the US cadets. He also
convinced US authorities of the
value of learning seamanship on a
tall ship, and following the war the
US Coast Guard purchased its
well-known tall ship the US Eagle,
to replace the Danmark. This close
Danish-American teamwork lasted
until Sep. 26, 1945, when Dan-
mark and her Captain were re-
turned to the Danish Government
with full honors. The Danish ges-
ture is still remembered and appre-
ciated in the USA.
Reflecting the special kinship be-
tween the Danmark and the US
Eagle, Danmark sails as the first
foreign ship behind the Eagle in
official Tall Ship Parades.
This was the case on Jul. 4, 1986,
when Danmark was honored with
the number two position sailing
behind the Eagle during the Parade
of Tall Ships celebrating the 100th
birthday of the Statue of Liberty,
and again in 2000 when the Dan-
mark sailed as the first foreign ship
behind the Eagle during the Mil-
lennium Voyage of Tall Ships
along the East Coast from Miami
to Boston. Built in 1933, the Dan-
mark is a steel-hulled, three-
masted fully-rigged ship and prop-
erty of the Kingdom of Denmark.
It has served as training vessel for
young people seeking careers at
sea.
The ship has 26 sails, 236 ropes,
and a main engine is used in low
wind conditions. The Danmark has
a permanent crew of 15 consisting
of: captain, chief officer, chief en-
gineer, deck officers, doctor, chief
steward, cooks and quartermasters.
The ship also has 80 trainees –
young men and women ages 17-23
whose voyage is part of a basic
training program to qualify for a
career in the merchant navy.
Training aboard the Danmark con-
sists of safety at sea, navigation,
engineering, maritime technology,
electro technology, seamanship,
watch duties, hygiene and English.
Teamwork and co-operation are
also important qualities developed
to make the ship sail in a safe and
efficient manner.
When signing on the Danmark, the
trainees meet the challenge of liv-
ing, studying and working in a
maritime environment which is in-
tense and challenging. They all
sleep in hammocks during a cruise
Danmark To Visit Port
July Best Month Ever For Pa. Casinos
July was the highest grossing
month ever for Pennsylvania casi-
nos.
The state’s 10 casinos took in
more than $218 million from slot
machines, and they raked in more
than $56 million from table
games. Most of the casinos in fact
saw a decrease in slots revenue
from last year, but the addition of
$14.5 million from the recently-
opened SugarHouse Casino in
Philadelphia made July a record
month overall. On average, there
were 1,500 more slot machines in
active play this July than there
were the year before.
17
which lasts 16 weeks. Their pri-
vate life is limited to the ham-
mock, a small cabinet and a small
locker. The trainees perform
nearly all the practical tasks; watch
duties etc. on board under the su-
pervision of the crew. They are
also taught theoretical subjects by
the crew members. The working
hours can be very long – up to 10-
12 hours daily divided in watch
duties, practical work and theory
lessons.
The DANMARK forms an excel-
lent teaching environment which
combines theory and practice. The
trainees achieve technical and so-
cial skills difficult to obtain in tra-
ditional training environments.
This year, Capt. Kurt Anderson
and the crew of the Danmark are
going to visit two ports at the US
East Coast: Savannah, Sep. 13-17
and Philadelphia, Sep. 23-27. Ar-
riving at 10:30 a.m. on Friday,
Sep. 23, they will open the tall
ship to the public on Saturday,
Sep. 24 from 2:00 p.m. until 4:30
p.m.; Sunday, Sep. 25 from 2:00
p.m. to 4:30 p.m., and Monday
September 26 from 1:30 p.m. until
3:30 p.m.
The Danmark will depart the
Philadelphia Waterfront on Tues-
day, Sep. 27 and cross the North-
ern Atlantic to return back to
Denmark. The Program of Free
Events at Penn’s Landing is
funded and produced by the
Delaware River Waterfront Corp.
