A Message from Our Pastor Fr. Gregory Spencer

Today is the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ, sometimes refer red to as Corpus Christi Sunday, taken from the Latin “Corpus Christi” which means Body of Christ (I like the newer name after Vatican II because it reflects more completely the fullness of Jesus in both his body and blood). This Sunday, we celebrate the second solemnity during this period of Ordinary Time in the liturgical calendar (last week, it was Holy Trinity).

Today’s Gospel is taken from the Gospel according to John. The reading is part of the Bread of Life discourse between Jesus and a crowd who witnessed the miracle of Jesus’ multiplication of the loaves and fishes. In John’s Gospel, miracles such as this are identified as “signs” through which people come to believe that Jesus is the Son of God. These signs are followed by a dialogue, or discourse that interprets and explains the miracle. In John’s Gospel, Jesus’ multiplication of the loaves is said to have occurred near Passover, thus linking it to the Exodus story and God’s saving action toward the Israelites.

Having seen Jesus multiply the loaves and fishes, the crowd pursues him, perhaps seeking more food but also looking for another sign. Jesus tells the crowd that he is the bread of life. The crowd also has trouble understanding how Jesus could give them his flesh to eat. Jesus tells them that when they eat his flesh and drink his blood, they will remain forever connected to him. These are difficult words to hear, but they are important because they seek to show us our intimate connection with Jesus.

This mystery is at the heart of our Eucharistic theology. In the elements of bread and wine, Jesus’ Body and Blood are truly present (called Real Presence). When we share in the Body and Blood of Christ, Jesus himself comes to dwell within us. This communion with the Lord makes us one body, brings us eternal life, and sends us forth to be Christ’s Body in the world.

Ad Maiorem Dei Gloriam, Fr. Greg

June Is the Month of the Sacred Heart

June Devotion O Heart of love, I put all my trust in Thee; for I fear all things from my own weakness, but I hope for all things from Thy goodness.

June Prayer Almighty and everlasting God, look upon the Heart of Thy well-beloved Son and upon the acts of praise and satisfaction which He renders unto Thee in the name of sinners; and do Thou, in Thy great goodness, grant pardon to them who seek Thy mercy, in the name of the same Thy Son, Jesus Christ, who liveth and reigneth with Thee, world without end. Amen

June 10, 2020 -COVID UPDATE LETTER

Dearest Parishioners, I pray I find you all healthy and in good spirits. I have good news for all of you today! We will be having indoor Mass in our beloved Church (the outdoor Mass will no longer take place due to the heat of the summer). As with anything these days, there are protocols to which we must all adhere for the safety of all parishioners and priests. We know the desire to return to our parish, participate in the liturgy, and receive the Eucharist is incredibly strong, but we ask that everyone approach this time with a patient, loving and charitable mindset. While these protocols and guidelines are subject to change as we learn and adapt, please CAREFULLY read the following things everyone should be prepared for:

The general dispensation from the Sunday obligation from our Bishop Luis Rafael will remain in effect. Please NOTE: you are NOT obligated to attend Sunday Mass (but you can still participate in the LiveStreaming of the Mass or attend one of the daily Masses).

Attendance will be limited to approx. 200 individuals for those who sign up in advance.

Please arrive before Mass time. Once Mass begins, the doors will be shut and no one will be permitted to enter, even with signing up.

Social distancing, mask wearing, and personal sanitizer will be required.

Temporary liturgical changes will be in place (see below under Temporary liturgical changes #4).  Please understand there is a health risk for anyone who attends a public liturgy during this time.  With the understanding that these dates could change in the future as we re-evaluate and gather new information, our present steps for reopening are as follows with tentative scheduling:

Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament will begin this Friday, immediately following the livestream 8:30 Mass. Must use sign-up genius to register selected times. Adoration is from 9AM until 4 pm. Personal Prayer in the Chapel will continue Monday - Thursday, Noon - 4pm (no sign up needed) 3:30—4:30 pm Saturday Confessions will continue outside of the Parish Hall. Must use the sign-up genius to select a time. 5PM Saturday Mass Indoors at St. Mark will be celebrated by the newly-ordained Fr. Matthew Nwafor on June 13th, limited to 200 individuals. Must use the signup genius if you wish to attend. (This Mass will be Livestreamed Saturday only so that those who cannot attend, can watch). 6:30PM Saturday Mass Outdoors at Christ the King Church will begin soon, date to be posted, limited to 50 people. Fr. Cesar will be the celebrant. (no sign up is needed). If it rains, it will be moved indoors. 8:30AM Sunday Mass Indoors at St. Mark will begin this weekend with our traditional Graduating Seniors Mass. Must use the signup genius if you wish to attend, limited to 200 individuals. 11:30AM Sunday Spanish Indoors Mass at St. Mark will begin this weekend. Must use the signup genius, limited to 200 individuals. 8:30AM Daily Mass at St. Mark will resume Monday –Friday beginning on Monday, June 15th (no sign up needed)

Page 5: Daily Mass Schedule Monday—Friday: 8:30 am …...Angela Daughtry for more information music@stmarkcc.net Jesus asks us to love him by spending one quiet hour with him in the Blessed

10AM Daily Spanish Mass at St. Mark will resume Monday-Thursday beginning on Monday, June 15th. Please NOTE: no longer at 9:30AM but 10AM for Spanish Mass. (No sign up is needed). There will be no Spanish Mass on Fridays due to Adoration in the chapel. All Sunday Masses and Daily Masses will be LiveStreamed for those unable to attend.

All signups are sent through Realm - you must be a registered parishioner to receive these. All updates and schedules will be published on the St. Mark website There will no doubt be challenges and frustrations. Your household might not be able to attend liturgy the first few weeks it resumes. We might have a sign-up blunder and things will not go according to plan. But we believe following these protocols and guidelines is a reasonable sacrifice for the dignity of every human life and respect of the liturgy. For the interest of the common good, and ultimately to best serve our own community, we do not want to contribute to a rebound effect.

Protocols and Guidelines for the Celebration of Liturgies at St. Mark Catholic Church

1. A general dispensation from the Sunday obligation will remain in effect

As stated by Bishop Luis Rafael, all the faithful continue to be dispensed from their Sunday   obligation. While this dispensation is applicable to all, the elderly, those sick, those with pre- existing health conditions, or other vulnerable people should especially continue to stay at home.

Charity and understanding are asked of all the faithful as parishes begin to reopen liturgies. Some parishes may not be able to offer the same opportunities as a neighboring parish due to size, space limitations, or other circumstances. Please use common sense and do not put your health and others at risk.

2. Attendance will be limited

To meet safety standards and guidelines, we have limited our capacity to 200 people per liturgy.

You must register with Signup Genius. A link will be emailed a few days before each event.

Each week a new link will be emailed for that weekend’s liturgies. Parishioners can sign up for a liturgy while seating is available. You will be given an arrival time to prevent congestion at the entrance.

Because of our limitations, only those Signed up will be permitted. Attendance will be taken.

No one should expect to be able to attend liturgy with regularity during this time.

Once Mass begins, the doors will be shut and no one will be permitted to enter, even if showing up late and have signed-up.

3. Social distancing, mask wearing, and personal sanitizer will be required

Masks for anyone 2-years and older and personal sanitizer are required.

Only the front doors of the Church will be used for entering and exiting, and the doors will be locked for entry when the liturgies begin.

No one is permitted to gather in the Gathering Space before, during, or after the liturgy.

Rows of chairs have been moved and taped off, and seating will be facilitated by Ushers, You will not be permitted to choose your seat. Due to limited space and social distancing, no one should expect to sit in their usual seat.

Page 6: Daily Mass Schedule Monday—Friday: 8:30 am …...Angela Daughtry for more information music@stmarkcc.net Jesus asks us to love him by spending one quiet hour with him in the Blessed

4. Temporary liturgical changes will be in place

Any variation from normal liturgical practice will be temporary.

Offertory baskets for the first and any second collections will be placed in front of the altar. You will be invited to place your envelopes in them when you come forward for Communion. There is one basket per aisle, which means both regular and special collections go in one basket. Please make sure your envelopes are marked for which otherwise it will be assigned to general parish funds.

Ushers will seat you – you may not enter the sanctuary without being escorted by an usher  Worship aids will be available on St. Mark website.

A head nod, bow, or similar non-contact gestures will be used at the Sign of Peace for individuals not in the same household.

Ushers will facilitate social distancing between individuals not in the same household for the   Communion Processional. We will use a single file line to come forward.

Distribution of the Precious Blood has been suspended during this time.

Sanitize your hands with your personal sanitizer before receiving the Eucharist.

Reception of Communion in the hand is encouraged.

Those distributing and receiving the Eucharist are not permitted to wear gloves. Eucharist will not be distributed to anyone wearing gloves.

Remove your mask only when consuming the host, and promptly replace it and finally re-sanitize your hands immediately after touching your mask.

Ushers will facilitate dismissal from the liturgy by rows to avoid congestion.

5. There will be a risk for anyone who attends a public liturgy or devotion.

Anyone who enters a public space should recognize there is a risk of contracting the corona   virus. Improved cleaning will occur at our church, but no one should expect that they will be any   safer from germs or viruses than other public spaces.

Doors will be propped open upon leaving so no one touches door-handles.  Restrooms are located next to the choir area and will be limited by social distancing. Please use only in emergencies. Please make sure you go before coming to Church, keeping usage to a minimum.

Regular cleaning and sanitizing will take place between all liturgies.

6. Office Hours- The Parish Offices will remain closed to the public until further notice. The staff will be in the office from 9AM -4PM, Monday -Friday. You can make an appointment if

needed by calling or emailing the parish office. If you are scheduled for an appointment, you will need to wear a mask and will be assigned a place

to meet. Upon arrival for an appointment, someone will greet you at the door by the Parish Hall to let you in.

Office areas will be closed off during all Mass times. (No one will be permitted to wander through the hallways to the office areas, meeting rooms and classrooms).

If we all work together, we can ease back into this and continue to incrementally add more people and options. However, if we look for ways to get around the regulations, we will likely create situations that force us to take steps back. Let us remain prudent, and get through this unique time in our history with each other. Thank you for taking the time to read this and we appreciate your cooperation. May God keep us all safe and loving. Pax Christi,

Fr. Gregory Spencer, Pastor

12th Sunday in Ordinary Time The Reassurance of Faith Matthew 10: 26-33 Do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. (Matthew 10:28) Living the World: In today’s Gospel, we hear Jesus telling the Apostles to live in God’s love. We have to remember to place our trust in God. Have you ever heard the saying, “the family that prays together, stays together?” Well, this is a great week to bring prayer to your home as a family (if you haven’t already). Our children WATCH everything we do! If they see Mom and Dad, praying for a sick friend or relative, praying for a tough decision, praying in thanksgiving for the many blessings they have, etc., the children will notice that. And include your children in the prayer experience! If there is something your child is struggling with, encourage them to pray to God, ask Him for guidance and protection. Teach your child to trust in God’s care! Make gathering around your prayer space a daily occurrence in your family’s lives! Questions of the Week: Child: What could you do to encourage someone who is feeling hurt? Adult: When has your faith in Jesus been most seriously tested?

Fun Facts for Catholic Kids: Did you ever realize that the Bible is a family album? When you look at YOUR family pictures, your parents can tell you what it was like “way back when” you were a baby – and maybe even when y our parents and grandparents were babies! Well, “way back when” Jesus was born, there were no cameras, but the Bible has stories that are like “word pictures” that tell you what it was like when the family of the Church began! Aren’t you

glad you belong to TWO families --- your own and God’s? Take some time to look through and read some of the Bible stories to get to know God’s family better and your place in it!

I have been encouraging our families to participate in different activities during the month of June devoted to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Here is a picture Luke’s mom sent in of his hearts with prayer intentions on them in his Sacred Heart of Jesus prayer space.
