It has been a busy food week in the Patrickverse. One of my buddies, a former cook at the phenomenal Lucia in Dallas, came into town and wined and dined us all through Austin—and in our own kitchen. I learned two things from his visit: 1. A great cook can make an outstanding meal with very limited cooking utensils, and 2. I lack a lot of the tools required of an excellent cook.

Or an ambient dining area. Or a lot of things that make a great dining experi-ence. So I’ve gathered a list of cooking tools, utensils and kitchen furnishings befitting of both a great experience and a delicious meal. The coolest of them all? The Mt Whitney Dining Table by Blake Avenue Furniture. But let’s start with smaller pieces, shall we? Baby steps Patrick, baby steps.

1. Designer Series Board in Fish Pattern, from Epicurean - I love sea-food, and as a former sushi chef, I humbly approve of this quirkily illustrated cutting board.

2. Personalized Footed Cutting Board by Gray Works Design - I love charcuterie, and this footed cutting board/serving platter is perfect for rustic cheese and meat plates.

3. Round Fry Pan by Lodge - My dad recently gave me a tiny cast iron pan, and I can’t stop cooking with it. This model is a major step up from my current one.

4. Farmhouse Dinner Plate from Terrain - These rustic, farm-inspired plates are cutesy reminders of where our food comes from. Although that may not be the most appropriate choice for the veggie munching crowd.

5. Knife Block Set from Williams-Sonoma - A trusty and well-maintained knife set is key to any kitchen. This set contains all the basics and a cool wood storage block that really complements that dining table.
